Case Study Methodology

Methodological reflections about case study research have increased within recent years. According to our account, there are three distinct approaches to case studies: co-variational, causal process tracing, and congruence analysis. The main goals of this article are to lay out the distinct ways in which causal inferences are drawn for the cases under study and to scrutinize the different understandings and directions of generalization within these three approaches. By doing so we highlight two aspects: First, causal process tracing and congruence analysis should be seen as two distinct alternatives to the dominant co-variational template. Second, the main characteristics of case studies, their thickness, provides only an unavoidable dilemma if we aim to generalize the findings towards a wider population of similar cases as in the co-variational template. If we would like to get deeper insights â-“ as the causal process tracing approach does â-“ or if we would like to use the empirical evidence for a broader theoretical discourse â-“ as the congruence analysis does â-“ case studies do not face a trade-off.

Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to report on how collaboration in a service network of a major Telco, involving a key partner and its affiliate network, enables dynamic capability building for achieving services innovation. These capabilities are subsequently analysed for emerging trends and patterns of relationships, and later grouped into different constructs based on existing literature, to present a Dynamic Capability building-framework through partnering. Design/methodology/approach -The method for this paper is a case study of a large Telco, including its distribution channels and franchised retail centres; and a key trading partner, TPartner, and its affiliated network. Interviews were conducted, transcribed, coded, and similarities in views by different participants were incorporated into emergent themes and patterns for analysis. Findings -The paper finds that collaboration, collaborative organisational learning, collaborative innovative capacity, entrepreneurial alertness, and collaborative agility are all core dynamic capabilities that foster innovation in services. Second, collaboration enables firms to redefine their strategic and operational capabilities. Third, partnering allows managers to rethink, rearrange and reposition their sourcing strategies to better meet customer demand. Lastly, through partnering with customers and their ensuing engagement, managers are equipped with superior ability to anticipate discontinuity in customer preferences across channels, and through customer knowledge managers are able to meet future demand expediently. Originality/value -This study advances our understanding of how organisations can build competence based on dynamic capabilities through collaboration in order to foster service innovation.

B2P Limited is a New Zealand biotechnology start-up specialising in microbiological products for testing of bacteria and pathogens in the global food and water based industries. “Water and Food Safety Testing Products for the New Zealand Mollusc Aquaculture Organisation: A Case Study in New Product Innovation” is an exploratory applied research project using case research methodology combining qualitative and quantitative methods for data gathering and analysis.
The literature review has revealed that the global aquaculture industry is in need of improved water and food testing methods. The New Zealand aquaculture industry is growing rapidly and has similar needs. The objective of the research is to identify the criteria for potential adoption of three microbiological testing products in the mollusc sector of the New Zealand aquaculture industry. Four New Zealand commercial aquafarms were selected to participate in the field trials of three water and food testing products.
The central aspect of the research undertakes to identify, collect, analyse and report information taken from customer product interaction to establish criteria for adoption and potential use of product benefits. The scope of the research did not allow for an assessment of the scientific efficacy of the microbiological tests. This had been completed earlier in the test development work. The research encompassed in the current study, sought to provide some information on the cost benefit scenarios and general applicability of the B2P tests within the aquaculture environment. The results of the field research are used to indicate the economic advantages or disadvantages of product use in comparison with existing products and processes in each of the aquafarms. A key potential benefit of the use of the B2P products is the improved quality of delivered shellfish as a result of a reduced risk of harvesting contaminated shellfish. A second key benefit is the increased revenues due to lower rejection in the market. Thirdly, the use of the B2P products gives the aquafarmer the capability to reduce the number of lost harvests and as a result to reduce wastage, reduce re-work and reduce the costs of production. Improved shellfish quality may increase volume of sales and open new markets. Improved quality of delivery may increase distributor orders.
The knowledge gained should lead to potential B2P product and aquafarming product improvements and a greater knowledge of the criteria for B2P product adoption by potential markets in the global aquaculture industry. The research findings support the literature that customer product interaction early in the new product development life cycle can improve the likelihood of new product success in new markets.

The NFHS-3 was also revealed that discontinuation rates for temporary methods are quite high. Thirty-seven percent of

services and access to a basket of contraceptive choices are essential to fulfill the unmet needs for family planning in
India. Improving quality offers many benefits. Contraceptive use is safer & more effective. Information & services are
more accessible. Clients make informed decisions & more satisfied. Providers find their work more rewarding. The public
has a more positive view of health care & its providers. For improving quality client centre care needs to be provided i.e.
respect, understanding, accurate information, competence, convenience & result. The best care helps clients achieve their
own reproductive goals.
