moreThe intractable nature of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict produced two contradictory narratives depicting the history of the conflict from both Israelis and Palestinians. At this point it is not an overstatement, to say that there are numerous accounts out there, which are indeed far from neutrality, as they support claims or rationalize/irrationalize the reasons behind certain turning points or incidents, depending on a particular understanding or an interpretation of the history of the conflict. This telling and retelling of the history of this antagonism proves how highly contested it is; in terms of the sequence of events and its developments, the characters involved, theological perspectives, is it Israel or is it Palestine? who is a freedom fighter and who is a terrorist? One should not anticipate straightforward answers for such a historically framed (and claimed) context.
This chapter will present both narratives with respect to significant turning points and events in the conflict while paying special attention to sources that have been a part of each epoch or contributed to it. This in return would help answer the first question of this thesis regarding structural change and transformations in patterns of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. It also provides a better understanding of how this context influenced today’s peace activism in Israel and highlights the factors that contributed to the birth of Peace Now Movement.
