Communicative Action Theory

The intractable nature of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict produced two contradictory narratives depicting the history of the conflict from both Israelis and Palestinians. At this point it is not an overstatement, to say that there are numerous accounts out there, which are indeed far from neutrality, as they support claims or rationalize/irrationalize the reasons behind certain turning points or incidents, depending on a particular understanding or an interpretation of the history of the conflict. This telling and retelling of the history of this antagonism proves how highly contested it is; in terms of the sequence of events and its developments, the characters involved, theological perspectives, is it Israel or is it Palestine? who is a freedom fighter and who is a terrorist? One should not anticipate straightforward answers for such a historically framed (and claimed) context.
This chapter will present both narratives with respect to significant turning points and events in the conflict while paying special attention to sources that have been a part of each epoch or contributed to it. This in return would help answer the first question of this thesis regarding structural change and transformations in patterns of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. It also provides a better understanding of how this context influenced today’s peace activism in Israel and highlights the factors that contributed to the birth of Peace Now Movement.

En el presente trabajo se pretende exponer cómo Jürgen Habermas aborda la cuestión de la verdad en el contexto de su teoría de la acción comunicativa. Si bien los intereses que rigen la obra del autor alemán responden fundamentalmente a cuestiones de orden práctico, referidas a la organización social y la legitimación de las instituciones, siempre guiadas por sus pretensiones de emancipación, su obra alberga un amplio contenido teórico sobre el que apoyar la praxis y que opera como instancia crítica de las formas de organización social. Con el fin de abordar esta compleja cuestión, el texto comienza señalando brevemente cómo Habermas llega a la noción de acción comunicativa que articula su teoría y que resulta fundamental para abordar, en segundo lugar, el tratamiento del asunto de la verdad tal y como lo hace nuestro autor. Finalmente, se abordan cuestiones que han sido discutidas por otros autores o que pueden resultar confusas.

En este trabajo comparamos las recepciones de Niklas Luhmann y Jürgen Habermas del concepto de Lebenswelt y de problemas asociados como la tipicidad y la cotidianeidad. Focalizamos sobre el lugar de esta recepción en sus respectivas teorías del sentido y de la modernidad a los efectos de identificar y cotejar sus funciones y variaciones, y determinar convergencias y divergencias. En sentido contrario a la interpretación estándar, se sugiere la hipótesis de que ambos autores convergen en el interés teórico por el Lebenswelt, lo cual, lejos de menospreciar divergencias, permite precisarlas en torno a las segmentaciones de la comunicación qua unidad de análisis.
