A másik közmondás volt, hogy a csodák soha nem ismétlődnek. Tudták, hogy nem elég kérni és ígérni, s nem elég megtartani az ígéretet. " 1 Szent Januáriusz, olaszul "San Gennaro" 1656-tól Nápoly, 1663-tól a Nápolyi Királyság védőszentje lett, a Nápolyi Királyság pedig a középkortól fokozatosan a szent kultuszának a központjává vált. 2 A szent életéről kevés biztos adattal rendelkezünk: feltehetőleg a 3. század során élt, és 305. szeptember 19-én végezték ki. A Nápoly közelében fekvő Benevento püspöke volt, akit a pogányság megtagadása miatt társaival együtt halálra ítéltek: a pozzuoli arénában vadállatok elé vetették őket. A legenda szerint az állatok nem bántották San Gennarót, ezért végül a város mellett található kialudt vulkán, a Solfatara kráterében karddal fejezték le. A szent kultuszának és a nevéhez fűződő legendának is fontos eleme, hogy egy helyi asszony, Eusebia a kivégzéskor felfogta a szent vérét, így őrizve meg azt az utókor számára. This paper examines the impact of social media platforms on modern-day interstate conflicts. Focus is placed on the different strategies employed by Russia and Ukraine on Twitter (X), TikTok and Telegram, which have significantly fueled the Russo-Ukrainian war. The study argues that while social media platforms are not the primary instigators of interstate conflicts, they play a pivotal role in escalating and shaping the nature of such conflicts. As powerful tools of communication, these platforms have been used for information warfare, propaganda, public diplomacy and disinformation by both states. Consequently, they have amplified the pre-existing causal factors of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict by influencing both international narratives and domestic perceptions. By analyzing Russia and Ukraine's digital strategies, the paper highlights the complex interplay between technology, political power and modern warfare within the evolving landscape of global interstate conflict.

In March 1585, the creation of the noble branch of the Catholic League and the Guise call to arms were prepared so secretly that Henri III was taken unawares. This might seem surprising to historians. After all, the Guise family had played a central role in French political life since the start of the Wars of Religion and their political ambitions were regularly denounced by their opponents. Ever present in the interpretations of the events highlighted by historians who have been influenced by the political rhetoric of the time, the Guise did not, however, represent the main threat in the eyes of the government authorities in March 1585. Rather than a secretive, transnational uprising led by the Guise, this article argues that the monarchy primarily feared a traditional noble revolt led by the duc de Montmorency, governor of Languedoc, which explains the surprise of the king at the start of this Catholic League and his unreadiness to face this threat.

This article analyses 17th-century warfare through 499 illustrations of battle formations from the Swedish National Archives (Riksarkivet). We examined each illustration based on several key elements: symmetry; the depth of battle patterns in terms of main throws and lines; the width-to-depth ratio; the relationship between cavalry and infantry positioning; the spacing of cavalry and infantry; the formations used for both cavalry and infantry; and the number of units involved. We utilised the LOEES method within the Gretl statistical package to analyse the results. The most important results are that perfectly or nearly symmetrical formations were the most common. The number of units varied between 50 and 100. Only from the mid-1670s onward did we notice a significant increase in the number of units included in the formations.

discovered at the Battle of Waterloo battle site, and the harsh
realty on how the dead on the battlefield were disposed. The previous essay with some similar content I deleted from

All use subject to JSTOR Terms and Conditions 288 Historical Reflections / Reflexions Historiques tragic fin de siecle , sparking among some an acute sense of eschatological dread and anticipation, while eliciting from others an urge for stoic withdrawal and impassivity before the chaos which seemed to engulf them.2 For many reasons, the conversion of Henri IV in 1593 stands at a crossroads of sorts in the development of the French monarchy and French political culture. His long-awaited and dramatic encounter with God at the abbey church of St-Denis proved to be the first in a series of steps by Henri IV to end the wars that had ravaged France for thirty years and to begin rebuilding the crown's shattered authority and tarnished prestige. Once charted, his successors never strayed from this course throughout the next century as they re-fashioned the French monarchy and the society it governed in a process known as the growth of Bourbon absolutism.3 What made the absolutist system erected by the Bourbons so distinctive is a question that has agitated the minds of historians for many years. Some, such as Georges Pages, Roland Mousnier, and Richard Bonney, have gauged this expansion of royal power largely in terms of the elaboration of new instruments of rule, giving particular emphasis to the rise of the conseil d'etat , the venality of offices, and the intendancy.4 Historians of political thought, such as Pierre Mesnard, William F. Church, and Donald Kelley, to name only a few, have rightly pointed out that much of this progress depended on earlier, yet crucial changes that had taken place in ideas about kingship and the law during the sixteenth century.5 Recent work deciphering the intricate

En el presente artículo hemos profundizado en el proceso de transición desde las cédulas de manifestaciones, como mecanismo tradicional para sacar a la luz la plata fuera de registro para que contribuyera con los derechos reales y con la avería, hasta el sistema de indultos de flotas completas a la vuelta de viaje de las Indias. Al respecto, hemos analizado los indultos al comercio de la década de 1650, y hemos constatado que su procedimiento guarda una estrecha relación con las transformaciones de la avería que alumbraron un nuevo modelo de financiación de las armadas y flotas de la Carrera de Indias que tuvo su epílogo en las reformas fiscales de este derecho en 1660-1667.

Reviewed by: Michael Wolfe Queens College-CUNY Although historians continue to debate the nature and consequences of the Military Revolution, none deny that the transformation of war during the early modern era brought profound changes to European society and the world. With these changes came lexical and metaphorical challenges to describe new objects and articulate the changing nature of war. The collection of essays under review takes up these problems and forms part of the Eurolab project studying the historical evolution of vernacular languages in Europe during the Renaissance. As the editors' introduction explains, the contributors approach this problem from the vantage point of new technical vocabularies and as a novel set of experiences that required new kinds of languages to be comprehended. The first five essays focus on the genesis of terms denoting gunpowder weapons and the new bastioned fortifications erected to keep them at bay. Jan-Dirk Müller opens with a study of terms for weapons and techniques introduced into German by Emperor Maximilian I in his thinly disguised autobiography, the chivalric romance Weisskunig (1514).

News and military plans of the Nunciature in Vienna on the 1689–1690 blockade and recapture of Kanizsa
From the beginning, the papacy monitored and supported the anti-Ottoman struggles in Hungary militarily, diplomatically, and financially. In this context, they were continuously and thoroughly informed about the occupation of Kanizsa in 1600, the unsuccessful recapture attempts in 1601 and 1664, and the recapture in 1690. The main information channel related to Kanizsa was the nunciature operating alongside the emperor – who also wore the Hungarian royal crown – informing the Eternal City with its regular reports. From these, we can see that even before the liberation of Buda in 1686, Nuncio Buonvisi had already considered the possibility of blockading and occupying Kanizsa. Until the end of his work in Vienna, he developed several military plans, in which the capture of one of the last castles in Ottoman hands was an important segment. Moreover, in 1688 he would have been willing to use considerable papal aid money to hire the forces needed for the blockade of Kanizsa.
After the departure of Buonvisi, Francesco Tucci temporarily assumed the duties of nuncio. He reported on the increasingly worrying state of the Ottoman garrison at Kanizsa, the beginning of the capitulation negotiations, the discussions in Vienna, and then the surrender of the castle. The news did not end there, as Tucci reported on the Te Deum in Vienna said due to the recapture of the castle, as well as on the episcopal mass celebrated in Kanizsa, and on the appearance of the Franciscans and Jesuits. All this suggests that, unlike the siege almost 90 years earlier, no papal mercenaries fought under Kanizsa in 1690, but the papacy and the diplomatic corps of the Holy See, continued to follow the military events here and were aware of the strategic importance of Kanizsa. In the previous years, the diplomatic and financial assistance provided during the reign of Pope Innocent XI fundamentally contributed to the change of the crescent moon to a cross on the cape of the Kanizsa castle.

La conversión de las milicias medievales y de su evolución en unas fuerzas voluntarias y mercenarias, a un verdadero ejército de leva -formado por todos los ciudadanos del Estado-se produjo, en resumidas cuentas, a partir de la Revolución Francesa y quedó consolidado en el ejército nacional prusiano durante la unificación alemana. Así, la construcción del Estado nacional -como nos señala Hagen SCHULZE ( 35 )-tuvo mucho que ver en la imbricación conocida de los conceptos y realidades de patria, nación y Estado con los ejércitos que las defienden, conforman y, en cierto modo, representan. Este modelo contemporáneo, surgido en el siglo XIX, supuso el control, con mayores o menores dificultades, de la fuerza militar por el Parlamento y, por ello, con la voluntad soberana del pueblo y de sus gobiernos representativos, imitando el modelo británico.

El 23 de abril de 2025 participaré en el III Congreso Internacional Guerra y sociedad en la Monarquía Hispánica. Política, estrategia, ejércitos, historia naval, organización y cultura militar en el mundo moderno (1500-1800), donde tendré el lugar de presentar la complicada gestión del reino de Valencia durante la guerra de Sucesión a través del gobierno de Francisco Caetano y Aragón, teniente de la compañía italiana de Guardias de Corps, centrándonos en el complicado año de 1709.

jacek (Hiacynt) Boratyński – żydaczów Cup-bearer and Hussars’ Lieutenant during the Polish-Ottoman Wars in the 2nd half of the 17th century. Study of the profession of the soldier – summary

Through the whole of his military career, Jacek Boratyński served with one formation – win-ged hussars (husaria). Between 1666 and 1676 he was a companion (towarzysz) in two hussars’ banners (companies): initially in one of Aleksander Michał Lubomirski, voivode of Cracow, then after 1668 in the one of Jan Sobieski, grand marshal and grand Crown (Polish) hetman (and since 1674 king as Jan III). Then in 1676 he became lieutenant in the hussars’ banner of Jan Gniński, voivode of Chełmno (since 1682 Crown vice-chancellor). In such capacity, as officer of Polish lancers, he took part in Gniński’s embassy to Istanbul (1677–1678) and in relief of Vienna in 1683. He was part of the group of soldiers that were under patronage of grand Crown hetman Stanisław Jabłonowski. Between 1676 and 1696 (exact date unknown) Boratyński was one of the commanders in charge of hetman’s regiment (pułk) of cavalry. Thanks to military service and patronage, especially from Gniński’s side, he received land office ranks – first cup-bearer (cześnik) of Sanok, then deputy cup-bearer (podczaszy) of Żydaczów. His military service is very good benchmark for biographical studies of other Crown officers of the same rank.

Resumen: En el presente trabajo se expone un breve análisis de la evolución táctica y armamentística durante la Edad Moderna. La principal tesis de este artículo reside en el incuestionable impacto que tuvieron los avances tecnológicos en el devenir de las tácticas empleadas durante el periodo. En primer lugar, se detallan las principales causas que motivaron los primeros cambios armamentísticos de la Edad Moderna temprana y que, a su vez, contribuirían a un cambio tanto conceptual como práctico del ejercicio de la guerra. Como veremos, desde finales del siglo XV hasta el final de la Guerra de los Treinta Años se adoptará un tipo de táctica fundamentada en la infantería armada con picas flanqueada por arcabuceros y organizada en compactos batallones cuyo máximo exponente serán los Tercios españoles, los cuales dominarán los campos de batalla europeos durante buena parte de los siglos XVI y XVII. Asimismo, tras hacer un breve recorrido por el tipo de armamento y tácticas empleadas durante esta mitad, asistiremos a los cambios tecnológicos y, por ende, tácticos que se implementarán en los ejércitos europeos a finales del siglo XVII y principios del siglo XVIII. La proliferación de innovaciones como el fusil-bayoneta eliminarán del campo de batalla la figura del piquero y del arcabucero como unidades independientes, aglutinando el rol de ambos el nuevo infante armado con un fusil que, de ser necesario, podía convertirse en una pica al calar la bayoneta. Los ejércitos pasarán a formar en filas para adaptarse a la creciente potencia de fuego, abandonarán las armaduras y se implementará una férrea disciplina en los combatientes, pues esta resultaba indispensable para desarrollar las nuevas tácticas. En esta época, Federico II de Prusia hará de este reino la mayor potencia militar terrestre del momento perfeccionando todas estas innovaciones, así como implementando las suyas propias. Para completar este recorrido por la historia de los ejércitos modernos mencionaré los principales conflictos de cada periodo y como en ellos se ven representados dichos cambios o avances. A modo de conclusión, veremos como el gran desarrollo militar de este periodo histórico contribuyó plenamente a la formación de los Estados modernos.

This article analyses the role of the Marshal partition (1247) in political discourse and manuscript transmission in early modern Ireland. It is argued that the early modern interest in the Marshal partition reflects the vulnerability and the identity crisis of the English of Ireland due to British and Irish politics and changing European ideas of power and peerage. Overall, this article uses the Marshal partition as a key to open a broader discussion about noble, political, and manuscript cultures in early modern Britain and Ireland and to advocate for a greater permeation of the 'medieval' and 'early modern' historiographical divide.

ENG:The proposed lesson focuses on the analysis of technological and tactical innovations during the period between the 14th and 16th centuries. In particular, it examines the role of the Battle of Pavia (1525) as a key event in the transition towards modern warfare. The didactic approach includes a historical contextualization of military evolution, highlighting the shift from medieval heavy cavalry to the increasing centrality of firearms, such as arquebuses and light artillery. The lesson analyzes the consequences of these transformations, including the decline of traditional medieval fortifications and the development of modern-style defenses. Through a case study on the Battle of Pavia, the lesson explores the decisive role of new military technologies, assessing whether this event can indeed be considered a turning point in the emergence of modern warfare. The session concludes with a pedagogical reflection on the most effective methods to convey these concepts to students, encouraging an interdisciplinary approach.
ITA: La lezione proposta si focalizza sull’analisi delle innovazioni tecnologiche e tattiche nel periodo compreso tra il XIV e il XVI secolo. In particolare, viene esaminato il ruolo della Battaglia di Pavia (1525) come evento chiave nella transizione verso la guerra moderna. L’approccio didattico prevede una contestualizzazione storica dell’evoluzione bellica, evidenziando il passaggio dalla cavalleria pesante medievale alla crescente centralità delle armi da fuoco, come archibugi e artiglieria leggera. Si analizzano le conseguenze di tali trasformazioni, tra cui il declino delle tradizionali fortificazioni medievali e lo sviluppo delle difese “alla moderna”. Attraverso un caso studio sulla Battaglia di Pavia, si approfondisce il ruolo determinante delle nuove tecnologie militari, valutando se tale evento possa effettivamente essere considerato uno spartiacque nella nascita della guerra moderna. La lezione si conclude con una riflessione didattica sugli strumenti più efficaci per trasmettere questi contenuti agli studenti, incentivando un approccio interdisciplinare.

El próximo abril participaré en el III Congreso Internacional Guerra y sociedad en la Monarquía Hispánica. Política, estrategia, ejércitos, historia naval, organización y cultura militar en el mundo moderno (1500-1800). En este Congreso analizaré un asiento rubricado en 1697 y cuya evolución coincide con la Guerra de Sucesión. El caso estudiado tiene gran importancia para estudiar la construcción naval española entre los siglos XVII y XVIII pues los navíos Sagrario y Salvador, especialmente el segundo, constituyen una especie de "eslabón" entre los reinados de Carlos II y Felipe V.

El caso de estudio de las unidades irlandesas en los ejércitos de la Monarquía Hispánica, y especialmente el Regimiento Ultonia (debido a su posterior implicación en los sitios de Gerona en 1808-1809) es de especial interés ya que formula una imagen estereotipada de fieles y buenos católicos al servicio de la Corona; en su condición de exiliados y víctimas transgeneracionales de las persecuciones anglicanas.

Ce n'est que progressivement qu'émergent les institutions urbaines autonomes. Les rois-comtes ont favorisé leur capitale régionale. Ils accordent au XIII e siècle « les franchises et libertés de la cité de Mâcon 1 » Les franchises établissent pour les citoyens l'avantage de pouvoir régler les différends commerciaux entre eux ; ils obtiennent de régler le gros des affaires courantes et accèdent à une forme de pouvoir supérieur par l'exercice de la justice 2 . La charte fait une mention allusive aux boni homines, un Conseil de prud'hommes qui procède à des arbitrages 3 . À l'origine un petit groupe formé de quelques-uns des habitants « les plus riches, les plus distingués et les plus puissants » et de chevaliers. Toutefois aucune commune n'est établie à Mâcon 4 , la ville reste dirigée par le prévôt royal, d'origine noble puis bourgeoise 5 . Officier subalterne investi d'une responsabilité judiciaire, administrative et militaire, il domine le Conseil des boni homines. Ces dispositions du XIII e siècle, confirmées en 1317, évoluent peu à peu. En février 1347, les bourgeois obtiennent de pouvoir s'assembler, sous le contrôle des officiers du roi, « en un lieu convenable de la ville toutes les fois et autant de fois qu'il leur plaira, pour parler, conseiller et ordonner au profit commun des habitants 6 ». Ils obtiennent également la possibilité de pouvoir élire (« eslire entre eulx ») six prud'hommes résidant en ville nés dans le royaumece qui constitue une rupture avec les boni homines choisis pour moitié parmi les chevaliers et les bourgeois. Seule la plus grande et saine partie des citadins, une élite 7 , peut prétendre au consulat. Les élections désignent également le procureur-syndic de la ville. Ces avancées se conjuguent avec l'éloignement de la puissance royale alors que Jean II de Berry reçoit le comté en apanage. En 1363, les consuls obtiennent que quatre d'entre eux disposent de la puissance des six 8 . Ils peuvent se réunir, à partir de 1366, sans en appeler au bailli ou aux officiers royaux 9 . La querelle intervient alors que la capitale du bailliage est transférée depuis 1359 à Saint-Gengoux-le-National, une opportunité dont se saisissent les bourgeois pour solliciter le roi 10 . Leur victoire débouche sur davantage d'autonomie 11 alors que leur sécurité passe par le duc de Bourgogne capitaine de la province du Lyonnais. 12 Ces avancées sont complétées en 1367 par le droit d'élire des consuls nés en dehors du royaume 13 . L'élargissement du corps politique ne se fait pas en direction des maîtres des métiers mais de l'Empire. Les indices d'une querelle, entre maîtres des métiers et la plus grande et saine partie des habitantspeut-être aussi sur le poids que représente la charge de consulsont visibles dans les retards mis dans l'application du texte. L'année suivante les citadins « n'osent élire 14 » (1368) les consuls et cherchent un accord. Faut-il voir dans la réponse trouvée, le patronage d'Alphonse Chevrier conseiller du roi, l'une des « personnes les plus notables et les plus sages du royaume 15 » ? Les élus seront des citadins nés pour moitiés dans 1 Vidimus du roi Philippe VI : le document confirme les franchises économiques (liberté de circulation des biens et des personnes), l'assouplissement des contraintes seigneuriale sur le marché de la terre, l'adaptation des banalités, la mutation des droits seigneuriaux en taxes, la gestion des affaires et des conflits commerciaux. Enfin, les consuls s'entourent de conseillers en nombre variable 17 . Ces apports garantissent assez de libertés personnelles, économiques et judiciaires, pour que se forme une communauté urbaine solide 18 . Elle parvient à imposer à l'évêque, autre personnage fort de la ville, la reconnaissance des privilèges municipaux 19 . La mise en place d'un gouvernement propre à la ville lui donne une personnalité collective permanente. Elle peut posséder, gérer et défendre un patrimoine ; elle tient des comptes, lève et utilise l'argent des impositions directes et indirectes ; exerce la justice. La première mention des Etats du Mâconnais 20 date en 1367. La pratique consultative qui s'y exerce est inspirante 21 . À cette date, une « plus grant et saine partie » des habitants et bourgeois de la cité émerge et se distingue du « commun ». Elle est composée des citoyens les plus actifs et les plus capables d'agir en politique et sur l'économie. Ces individus « tiennent la main » des autorités requérantes. Partie la plus fortunée et la mieux informée de la communauté urbaine son rôle délibératif se révèle autour d'expressions telle : « se consente ». En son sein seront choisis les échevins. La cité redevient sa capitale et le point de convergence de nombreux officiers. Le bailliage fait retour en juin 1373 à Mâcon. La prévôté n'en est qu'une subdivision. Le bailli tient la cour du bailliage au château comtal sur le plateau de la baille. On y croise son lieutenant, le receveur du roi au bailliage, le procureur du roi, le juge mage, les gestionnaires du domaine 22 , des commissaires 23 , le maître des ports et des passages 24 , mais encore le maître de la monnaie de Mâcon, des avocats et des conseillers, des sergents. Le visage de ces officiers change au grès des oppositions partisanes et des relégations. Ils sont français, dans la mouvance de la maison d'Orléans jusqu'en 1417, puis bourguignons à compter de cette date jusqu'en 1422. On note une pause, en 1423, lorsque la ville est soustraite aux querelles des princes 25 et placée sous la tutelle du duc Amédée VIII de Savoie ( † 1451). Obraz Władysława jako władcy-wojownika przyjął się w historiografii. Zazwyczaj podkreśla się jego zasługi w reformowaniu armii polsko-litewskiej i wymienia różne koncepcje militarne, forsowane przez Zygmunta III, czy samego zainteresowanego, w których miał on odegrać kluczową rolę. Taki sposób percepcji wywarł wpływ na ocenę drugiego z Wazów władających Rzecząpospolitą. Przyglądając się uważniej aktywności militarnej Władysława w czasach rządów jego ojca, jak i po wstąpieniu na tron, nie sposób oprzeć się wrażeniu, iż utrwalony w świadomości historycznej wizerunek władcy-wojownika został wyolbrzymiony. Niniejsza publikacja stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie: czy syn Zygmunta III był rzeczywiście wybitnym wodzem? Czy może jest to mit, będący efektem propagandy dworu królewskiego?

The article is devoted to selected issues related to the so-called military reforms of Ladislaus IV Vasa. In the opinion of the author, the changes – hitherto associated with the activities of the king – began in the middle of the second decade of the seventeenth century and were primarily associated with an attempt to increase the firepower of the cavalry. Dragoons appeared in the Polish-Lithuanian army, reiters were enlisted more often and in greater numbers, various types of infantry could be found more and more often in the quarter army ranks. The number and thus the role of infantry and dragoons significantly increased during the war for the mouth of the Vistula River (1626–1629). At that time, attempts were also made, with considerable success, to replace small independent companies with large regiments. Ladislaus IV referred to these solutions in the course of preparations for the wars of 1633–1635.
The surviving sources allow us to question the view that Władysław IV’s intention was to create troops modeled on foreign ones, but recruited from among peasants and townspeople. The monarch, like Sigismund III, sought to form infantry units and dragoons composed of nobility, reinforced by foreigners and plebeians. At the same time, from the mid-1620s, the Polish-Hungarian infantry began to undergo changes, making it look like foreign troops (establishment of the office of captain, re-arming with muskets, change in the method of calculating pay)
Military reforms began before the accession of Władysław IV to the throne, and the king was not the only author of them, his advisers played an important role in the process of creating the army. However, it must not be forgotten that if it had not been for the stubbornness of the monarch, the Polish-Lithuanian army at Smolensk in 1633 would most likely have taken on a more traditional character. The king also played a significant role in the development of military law, engineering and cartography, as well as the reconstruction of the artillery, which allows him to be considered one of the leading architects of military changes in Poland-Lithuania in the first half of the 17th century.

W Archiwum Głównym Akt Dawnych w Warszawie zachował się ciekawy dokument, zatytułowany "Ekspensa na różne potrzeby wojskowe, puszkarzom, furmanom armatnym, szpiegom i innym anno 1659 a die 8 Augusti, idąc do Kurlandyjej". Zasadniczo zawiera on szczegółowy wykaz wydatków na cele wojskowe, które poniósł z prywatnej szkatuły pisarz polny litewski Aleksander Hilary Połubiński w trakcie kampanii w Księstwie Kurlandii i Semigalii w latach 1659-1660 oraz w okresie walk na Podlasiu z wojskami moskiewskimi kniazia Iwana Andrejewicza Chowańskiego w lutym-marcu 1660 r. Do dokumentu została też dołączona krótka informacja o wydatkach poniesionych przez Połubińskiego po bitwie nad rzeką Basią (październik 1660 r.) oraz w kampaniach z lat 1656-1658, podczas których dowodził on jako regimentarz dużymi, wydzielonymi grupami wojska litewskiego. Księstwo Kurlandii i Semigalii w toczącej się od 1655 r. drugiej wojnie północnej (zwanej w historiografii polskiej "potopem") zachowywało początkowo neutralność, jednakże jesienią 1658 r. zostało zdradziecko zaatakowane przez wojska szwedzkie feldmarszałka Roberta Douglasa, który zdobył Mitawę i uwięził księcia kurlandzkiego Jakuba Kettlera. Na pomoc Kurlandczykom wysłano pod koniec 1658 r. część sił litewskich pod wodzą oboźnego litewskiego Samuela Aleksandra Komorowskiego, a w sierpniu 1659 r. dosłano tam jeszcze korpus (ok. 4500-5000 żołnierzy) pod komendą Połubińskiego. Oddziały litewskie, wspierane również przez wojska brandenbursko-pruskie, do stycznia 1660 r. zdołały wyzwolić spod szwedzkiej okupacji prawie całe Księstwo Kurlandii i Semigalii. W rękach Szwedów pozostał tylko zamek w Bowsku, który opuścili już po zawarciu pokoju w Oliwie pod Gdańskiem (3 maja 1660 r.). Po zajęciu Mitawy (9 stycznia 1660 r.) korpus Połubińskiego odszedł na Podlasie i tam został zaatakowany przez moskiewską kawalerię kniazia Chowańskiego, co o mały włos nie zakończyło się dla Litwinów tragicznie 1 .

Ufundowany w 1623 r. w Warszawie klasztor franciszkanów reformatów cieszył się protekcją Zygmunta III, jednak śmierć króla spowolniła rozwój fundacji. Od samego początku niechętni byli jej bernardyni -przedstawiciele tej rodziny franciszkanów, z której w XVI w. wyodrębniły się trzy ugrupowania: dyskalceatów, reformatów i rekolektów. Ufundowany przy obecnej ulicy Senatorskiej w Warszawie klasztor przeżywał trudne chwile w czasie potopu szwedzkiego, doznając dużych zniszczeń zwłaszcza ze strony podkomendnych księcia siedmiogrodzkiego Jerzego II Rakoczego, którzy w czerwcu 1657 r. przejściowo okupowali Warszawę 1 . Reformaci -zgodnie ze ślubem ubóstwa -powinni utrzymywać się z codziennej kwesty, a w każdym razie nie wolno im było przyjmować pieniędzy. Ofiary pieniężne -jak i dary w naturze -mógł jednak klasztor otrzymywać od różnych dobrodziejów, którzy już od początku wspomagali w ten sposób zgromadzenie. Było to zresztą niezbędne dla jego przetrwania, zwłaszcza w początkowym okresie budowy kościoła i klasztoru, a później naprawy szkód wyrządzonych przez najeźdźców 2 . Konieczne było też bieżące utrzymanie zakonników, których w 1652 r. było dwudziestu, zaś w 1658 r. trzynastu 3 . Jednym z takich aktów dobroczynnych była donatywa ze strony wojska koronnego na rzecz warszawskich reformatów, postanowiona w 1654 r. Zdecydowano wówczas przekazać

One of the objectives of the publication is to present to both the professional and the lay public the events connected with the Thirty Years’ War, when the territory of Moravia was the site of military operations taking place with various levels of intensity in the individual districts during the lengthy conflict, above all from the archaeological perspective. The devastating consequences of war events affected numerous towns, villages, and aristocratic residences. Many places were besieged and plundered repeatedly. Evidence of one of the longest conflicts in modern history has survived to this day in the form of movable and immovable archaeological monuments throughout Moravia and Czech Silesia. In addition to the examination of battlefields, which has received increased attention especially in the Bohemian milieu in recent decades, the archaeology of conflicts is focused also on the examination of modern-era military camps – complexes that provided the background for locating the individual types of armed forces, their arms, and equipment for a certain time. The book is divided into several parts. In the first part, in addition to a brief summary of the most important events of the Thirty Years' War with regard to the territory of Moravia and the Přerov region, the reader is introduced to a description of the Swedish military field camp of the Swedish army in 1643 near Horní Moštěnice. The main part of the publication is a basic introduction to the various categories of weapons and armour used by the various types of troops during the Thirty Years' War. The presented militaria come mainly from archaeological finds from various localities in Moravia and Czech Silesia, and their presentation will allow all those interested in the subject to get acquainted with the archaeologized material for the first time, which has not been presented to such an extent to the professional and lay public. Most of the artefacts are published here for the first time.

Victor E. van Vriesland: 'het levend geweten van de Nederlandse dichtkunst', bij uitbreiding 'het geweten van de Nederlandse letterkunde', 'de éminence grise van de Nederlandse literatuur'. Wie met dit soort eretitels getypeerd wordt moet wel een uitzonderlijke statuur hebben bereikt. En inderdaad, de renommée van Victor E. van Vriesland (1892-1974) was imposant, met name in de eerste drie decennia na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Zijn reputatie van gezaghebbend criticus was in het interbellum gebaseerd op zijn functie van redacteur letteren bij de Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant (1931-1938). Zijn algemene bekendheid verwierf hij na 1945 niet door zijn kritieken, fictioneel proza, gedichten en vertalingen, maar door een indrukwekkend aantal bestuurlijke functies in talloos veel letterkundige organisaties. Hij kon de prominente 'voorzitter van alles' heten, maar ik noem hier slechts de Nederlandse PENclub, waarvan hij zeventien jaar voorzitter was en de internationale PEN, waarvan hij in de jaren zestig president was. Ook zijn meerdelige bloemlezing en standaardwerk Spiegel van de Nederlandse poëzie door alle eeuwen (1939-1954, en herdrukken tot en met 1969) droeg niet weinig bij aan zijn roem. Bovendien werd hij een Bekende Nederlander door zijn deelname aan het populaire humoristisch literaire radio-en televisieprogramma 'Hou je aan je woord' (tv: 1961-1964).
