Ecology and Conservation

The analysis of the macro invertebrate assemblage in the wetlands of Lokoja and physico-chemical parameters; based on anthropogenic events across catchments of the wetland, sampling stations were allocated. From January to June, ecological parameters such as air and water temperature dissolve oxygen concentration, depth and pH levels as well as the macro invertebrate fauna were assessed. The analysis found that the temperature of air and water was highest in the March (31.42±1.0•C) and April (38.3±0.5C) respectively; Average Depth and dissolve oxygen concentration of the water were higher in June (0.55 ± 0.07 m) and (5.30±0.92 mg/l) each, while pH was higher in May (5.73±0.68). Similarly, the overall macro invertebrate was frequent during the dry season compared to the rainy season. Higher abundance was observed in the month of April with Coleopterans being highest followed by Orthoptera; followed by May and June. We observed changes in the growth dynamics of macro invertebrate fauna from April to subsequent May and June. Our findings revealed the state of macro invertebrate fauna in the wetland Areas of Lokoja, secondly we highlighted the condition of pollution in the wetland areas as such we recommend restoration of the wetland so as to increase ecological efficiency of the wetland as well as wastewater management framework aim at eradicating elicit environmental pollution by humans into the aquatic ecosystem.

Resumen Desde el Programa Operación Jaguar (SAVIA Bolivia-IUCN NL), se propone que el Jaguar (Panthera onca) debería ser re-ubicado en la Lista Roja internacional de la IUCN, en la categoría, o de Vulnerable (VU), o incluso, en la de En Peligro (Endangered-EN), dada la crítica situación que enfrenta, lo cual, implica que sea considerada como especie una amenazada (ya no casi amenazada) que enfrenta mayores riesgos de extinción. Esto con el fin de exigir y promover mayores acciones de protección y control, medidas legales más contundentes, y probabilidades de mejores financiamientos para su conservación. Similar posición se ha venido sustentado en el Brasil (Oliveira et al, 2012). Considerando la gran mayoría de estudios y opiniones de expertos que han estudiado al jaguar durante muchos años, es fácil concluir que es una especie en estado de creciente amenaza y con un estado de conservación que requiere de importantes esfuerzos para revertir la situación. Esto se relacionan con la pérdida y la fragmentación de su hábitat, a gran escala, por la deforestación acompañada de prácticas de chaqueo, quemas provocadas por el ser humano con fines de preparar la tierra para la siembra o cría de ganado, ampliando la frontera agropecuaria fuera y dentro de áreas protegidas. (De la Torre, et al.2017; Rumiz, Polisar y Maffei, 2012; Marchini, 2015; Gonçalves Morato et al. 2013; Jedrzejewski et al. 2017; Llanos, 2018; Roadmap 2030, 2019). La pérdida de hábitat, también significa la pérdida de presas, lo cual conduce a conflictos con ganaderos debido a que los jaguares se ven obligados a atacar al ganado vacuno, siendo una de las mayores razones por las que se evidencian grandes cantidades de jaguares cazados en las últimas décadas (Andrade Franco, et al.2018; Ayala y Wallace, 2009; Rumiz, 2015). A partir del año 2013, se activa una nueva fuerte amenaza sobre sus poblaciones en diversos países del continente, el tráfico de sus colmillos y otras partes hacia el continente asiático, con diferentes fines (Nuñez y Aliaga, 2017; Verheij,P. 2019; Reuter et al. 2019).

A culturally vibrant country like India has multiple embedded forms of folk traditions accompanied by an essentially rich history that is constituted by a cultural–ecological heritage. West Bengal, one of the eastern states of India, is inhabited by numerous ecosystem-dependent communities. Nature, culture, and livelihoods remain deeply entangled in the indigenous practices, blurring concrete boundaries that separate tangible from intangible heritage. In mainstream “ecological” and “heritage” discourses, the folk performative customs and their architects are often projected as harbingers of ecological wisdom—relying on nature and, at the same time, giving back to her. Shedding light on Patuas of Naya Pingla, West Medinipur, and Chhau mask makers from Charida, Purulia, we complicate this line of argument by exploring complex interactions between material and cultural variables influencing these “living heritage” traditions. Effective conservation of rare plant species requires a detailed understanding of their unique distributions and habitat requirements to identify conservation targets. Research suggests that local conservation efforts may be one of the best means for accomplishing this task. We conducted a geographical analysis of the local distributions of rare plants in Napa County, California, to identify spatial relationships with individual habitat types. We measured the potential contribution of individual habitats to rare plant conservation by integrating analyses on overall diversity, species per area, specificity-weighted richness, presence of hotspots, and the composition of the rare plant community in each habitat type. This combination of analyses allowed us to determine which habitats are most significant for rare plant conservation at a local scale. Our analyses indicated that several habitat types were consistently associated with rare plant species. In broad terms, grasslands, oak forests, coniferous forests, wetlands, serpentines, chaparral, and rock outcrops were most consistently highlighted. No single habitat stood out in every analysis however, and therefore we conclude that careful selection of an assemblage of habitats that best represents diverse, restricted and unique rare plant communities will be the most efficient approach to protecting rare plant habitat at local scales. Accordingly we present a means of identifying conservation targets and protecting global biodiversity through local efforts.

In the face of multiple threats, a group of indigenous Amazonian Kichwa smallholder farmers has organized a cooperative, Ally Guayusa.

Through a unique combination of market-based approaches to conservation and traditional agroforestry practices, they are diversifying their sources of income while protecting the Amazon rainforest.

Innovative partnerships with the Aliados Foundation and Lush Cosmetics’ Charity Pot have allowed this Kichwa community to expand their efforts.
