I membri del collegio di Nemesiaci oggetti di richiamo imperiale in un
provvedimento del 412 nel Codice Teodosiano sono figure di controversa interpretazione nella storia degli studi. Per comprendere le attività da essi svolte e come queste potessero configurarsi come un servizio pubblico, si analizzano gli aspetti del culto di Nemesi in età imperiale e in particolar modo il collegamento della dea con gli spettacoli anfiteatrali. Si esaminano poi le poche testimonianze epigrafiche e letterarie relative ai Nemesiaci e il loro frequente collegamento con Diana e la caccia. Infine, si propone di leggere il provvedimento sui Nemesiaci nel quadro della politica imperiale di controllo dei giochi pubblici tra IV e V secolo d.C.

La imagen de la mujer ha sido uno de los temas más representados en la historia. La atracción hacia el desconocimiento de ciertos fenómenos relacionados con la mujer, fue uno de los primeros temas que atrajo a los hombres desde el comienzo de los tiempos. Un ejemplo de ello sería la conocidísima Venus de Willendorf, la cual nos muestra cómo el hombre tenía una cierta preocupación por el conocimiento del surgimiento de la vida. Esta estatuilla de pequeño tamaño muestra la creencia de la importancia que la mujer tiene para el surgimiento de la vida, de este modo, la vida se relaciona de manera muy estrecha con la mujer. Esto nos da a entender que posiblemente existiera alguna vinculación religiosa a una diosa madre venerada como protectora de la vida tal y como apuntan ciertos historiadores. En concreto, en el caso español de la covada como una forma de representación social de las mujeres que posiblemente haya dejado una impronta en la misma sociedad.

Chi fa ricerca storica molto spesso è costretto ad avanzare ipotesi che, se saldamente ancorate ad elementi certi basati sulle fonti letterarie o su indiscutibili ritrovamenti archeologici, costituiscono il punto di partenza per successive conquiste scientifiche. Sovente accade, però, di trovarsi di fronte ad ipotesi che sarebbe più esatto definire illazioni, costruite sopra basi inesistenti e apportatrici quindi di confusione e di errori ulteriori che non fanno compiere alcun passo avanti alla ricerca della verità storica.

The present thesis seeks to address, in a reading of the text Le bain de Diane by Pierre Klossowski, the specific modalities through which literature aims to understand the complex ties between concepts of 'immanence' and 'transcendence'. To do so, I begin by introducing the concepts necessary for such an undertaking ⎯ reading authors such as Plato, Apuleius, Pierre Hadot, Gilles Deleuze and Michel Foucault, all of whom have contributed to the concept of the 'demon' as described in Klossowski’s work ⎯ and by introducing the concept of 'simulacrum', a key concept in Klossowsi’s writing. By tracing the creation and representation of these concepts in
various texts and then identifying them in Le bain de Diane, I attempt to demonstrate the importance of literary figuration in our complex relationship with concepts of the 'sensitive' and the 'suprasensitive'.

This article argues that Catullus c. 34, the “Hymn to Diana” contains coded
critique of Valerius Cato’s lost poem the _Diana_. Catullus uses metapoetic
language to present the _Diana_ as an Antimachean poem that is over-long, oldfashioned, overly obscure, and generally uncouth. I also consider possible connections between Cato’s _Diana_ and Antimachus’ lost _Artemis_.

Given that for most of these divinities and cults the data are usually scattered through a wide span of time and space, to what extent are we justified in treating all this evidence with the same degree of confidence in order to figure out a ‘religious profile’?

Given that for most of these divinities and their cult we have very few elements in the sources, to what extent are we allowed to look for useful information in the physical setting of their cult, i.e. in what is normally called the ‘religious landscape’?

Normally, when I meet an atheist, the first thing I like to do is to congratulate him and say, " My special congratulations to you", because most of the people who believe in God are doing blind belief - he is a Christian, because his father is a Christian; he is a Hindu, because his father is a Hindu; the majority of the people in the world are blindly following the religion of their fathers. An atheist, on the other hand, even though he may belong to a religious family, uses his intellect to deny the existence of God; what ever concept or qualities of God he may have learnt in his religion may not seem to be logical to him.

My Muslim brothers may question me, "why are you congratulating an atheist?" The reason that I am congratulating an atheist is because he agrees with the first part of the Shahada i.e. the Islamic Creed, ‘La ilaaha’ - meaning ‘there is no God’. So half my job is already done; now the only part left is ‘il lAllah’ i.e. ‘BUT ALLAH’ which I shall do Insha Allah. With others (who are not atheists) I have to first remove from their minds the wrong concept of God they may have and then put the correct concept of one true God, by the permission of Allah.

LOGICAL CONCEPT OF GOD

My first question to the atheist will be: "What is the definition of God?" For a person to say there is no God, he should know what is the meaning of God. If I hold a book and say that ‘this is a pen’, for the opposite person to say, ‘it is not a pen’, he should know what is the definition of a pen, even if he does not know nor is able to recognise or identify the object I am holding in my hand. For him to say this is not a pen, he should at least know what a pen means. Similarly for an atheist to say ‘there is no God’, he should at least know the concept of God. His concept of God would be derived from the surroundings in which he lives. The god that a large number of people worship has got human qualities - therefore he does not believe in such a god. Similarly a Muslim too does not and should not believe in such false gods.

If a non-Muslim believes that Islam is a merciless religion with something to do with terrorism; a religion which does not give rights to women; a religion which contradicts science; in his limited sense that non-Muslim is correct to reject such Islam. The problem is he has a wrong picture of Islam. Even I reject such a false picture of Islam, but at the same time, it becomes my duty as a Muslim to present the correct picture of Islam to that non-Muslim i.e. Islam is a merciful religion, it gives equal rights to the women, it is not incompatible with logic, reason and science; if I present the correct facts about Islam, that non-Muslim may Inshallah accept Islam.

Similarly the atheist rejects the false gods and the duty of every Muslim is to present the correct concept of God which he shall Insha Allah not refuse.

Abstract
The expanse of the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean in the Welsh Borders is rich in references to nature and to the local cunning folk, but also it is the place of the ancient Romano-Celtic deity Abundantia. There is a phenomenological connection with this Goddess and the elementals, and the Otherworld also known as the Greenwood, as a place where practitioners meet the Fae. For cunning-folk and pagans, the relationship between the skies, in the form of the moon and the changing seasons (in the forests and valleys) are redolent of connection with ‘other-than-human-entities’. Their participation in rituals equates with flesh and place (being present in bodily form at the liminal threshold, as opposed to being present in the spiritual form/astral form);  practising Wica (a practical energy/force of creativity) and Unwitching which is in express distinction from Wicca (as named by Gerald Gardner). For an association of the landscape also facilitates creativity, as a stage for magical practice. Using ‘Wica’ in rituals is the same as ‘La force’ as observed by Jeanne Favret-Saada in her ‘Deadly Words’(1969), when she conducted some pioneering work on cunning folk in the Bocage of France in the late sixties.

Nemorensis di Aricia volle simboleggiare la raggiunta supremazia di Roma sulla confederazione delle città della lega latina. Servius perpulit tandem ut Romae fanum Dianae populi Latini cum populo Romano facerent 6 . Servio infine indusse a erigere a Roma un tempio a Diana del popolo latino insieme ai Romani. Le città della Lega infatti avevano precedentemente scelto, come luogo di riunione, il santuario che sorgeva nel bosco (nemus) di Aricia. Tale santuario, che la tradizione voleva fondato da Oreste per conservare il simulacro della dea Artemide portato da Efeso, venne poi trasformato in tempio dal dittatore della lega Egerio. Lucum Dianium in nemore Aricino Egerius Laeuius Tusculanus dedicauit dictator Latinus. hi populi communiter: Tusculanus, Aricinus, Lanuuinus, Laurens, Coranus, Tiburtis, Pometinus, Ardeatis Rutulus 7 . Nella foresta di Aricia il dittatore latino Egerio Levio Tusculano consacrò un bosco sacro a Diana. Questi popoli insieme: Tusculano, Aricino, Lanuvino, Laurente, Corano, Tiburtino, Pometino, Ardeate Rutulo. L'origine del culto di Diana si rintraccia proprio nell'area dei Castelli Romani, precisamente a Nemi dove ancora oggi si trovano i resti del Tempio di Diana Nemorensis. Altri Diania erano situati nei territori del Lazio antico e della Campania. Quello di Diana Tifatina, uno dei più famosi, sorgeva presso Capua, alle pendici del monte Tifata, in un luogo ameno, ricco di boschi e, ancora come ci conferma Plinio: Est in suburbano Tusculani agri colle, qui Corne appellatur, lucus antiqua religione Dianae sacratus a Latio 8 . C'è su un colle suburbano della campagna di Tusculi, che è chiamato Corne, un bosco di antica santità consacrato a Diana dal Lazio. L'ubicazione boschiva dei templi testimonia l'aspetto silvano di Diana che, come la greca Artemide, è dea della caccia e del mondo silvestre. 6 Livio I 45. 7 Catone Origines fr. 58. 8 Plinio H.N. Non è una novità il fatto che luoghi di culto cristiani siano edificati in aree precedentemente caratterizzate dalla presenza di culti pagani, specialmente in contesti ove l'attaccamento delle genti all'antico culto e ai luoghi che lo celebravano era difficile da sradicare. Sul litorale di Maruggio (Ta), in zona denominata "Capoccia Scorcialupi", più comunemente conosciuta come "La Madonnina", "La Madonnina dell'Altomare", o "Stella Maris", sorge un tempietto dedicato alla Madonna, sulle rovine di un antico luogo di culto dedicato ad Artemis Bendis.

Con questa indagine ho messo in chiaro almeno le principali
questioni ancora insolute, richiamando l'attenzione su quanto di congetturale e di indimostrabile ci sia in tutte le teorie su Diana Nemorense. Gli studiosi che riprenderanno in esame questi temi non potranno non ricorrere alla massima
cautela nella valutazione della credibilità e della fondatezza sia delle testimonianze antiche, sia delle teorie moderne. In particolare, ribadisco che solo l'antichità della frequentazione di Nemi appare dimostrata al di là di ogni dubbio; che l'attribuzione a Servio Tullio della fondazione di Diana Aventinensis dipende in buona parte dal quadro interpretativo generale adottato dal singolo studioso e dal grado di credibilità concesso a priori alle testimonianze sul periodo regio; che la datazione della dedica di Egerio al 500 a.C. riposa sul presupposto indimostrabile dell'assenza di Roma dall'elenco dei popoli che vi presero parte; che infine, in mancanza
di prove definitive a proposito della priorità cronologica tra
Nemorensis ed Aventinesis, è il paradigma storico generale adottato dal singolo studioso che finisce inevitabilmente per spingere verso l'una o l'altra soluzione: i sostenitori dell'anteriorità di Diana Aventinensis si rifanno, spesso
esplicitamente, alla "grande Roma dei Tarquini", con cui si giustifica un predominio culturale di Roma nel Lazio ed una funzione guida della monarchia etrusca, mentre chi ritiene che allora Roma non potesse ancora svolgere un ruolo egemone è portato a vedere nell'Aventinensis solo una filiazione più tarda del santuario nemorense.

A Catalogue of Sculptures from the Sanctuary of Diana Nemorensis in the University of Pennsylvania Museum, Philadelphia; Catalogue; Appendix 1; Appendix 2; Bibliography and Abbreviations.

In a 200-year period roughly corresponding to the early and late Renaissance in Italy from 1450-1650, paintings of the stories of Susanna and the Elders, Diana and Actaeon, and David and Bathsheba, were popular across artistic expression. This thesis examines the work of Venetian Renaissance painter, Paolo Caliari, known as Veronese, by comparing his depictions of these three subjects with established artistic iconography. Through this context it can be argued that he has used the themes of the vulnerable woman, the gaze of males, and the bath, in order to challenge early modern judgement of Susanna, Diana, and Bathsheba. By embracing ambiguity and ambivalence in his paintings, Veronese has highlighted the deliberate role and responsibility of the male characters, thus absolving the women of culpability in the disastrous consequences following the moments that he has painted. In interrogating these images, this thesis seeks to advance a more nuanced understanding of Veronese’s oeuvre.

Organizzata dalla National Gallery di Londra in collaborazione con le National Galleries of Scotland di Edimburgo, il Museo Nacional del Prado di Madrid, l’Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum di Boston, la mostra ha segnato il primo appuntamento di un progetto espositivo e culturale itinerante che ha visto la celebre serie delle “poesie” esposte in altre due sedi. Curata da Matthias Wivel, con l'assistenza di chi scrive, la versione londinese dell’esposizione ha dovuto sottostare a tre stop forzati in ossequio alle misure di contenimento della pandemia, e questo nonostante la sua chiusura sia stata prorogata dal 14 giugno 2020 al 17 gennaio 2021. Quanto ciò abbia contribuito a limitare l’accesso alla mostra non solo al pubblico ma anche agli studiosi è evidente, e spiega la natura di questo contributo che non vuole essere in nessun modo una recensione, dal momento che la mostra ne è già stata ampiamente oggetto. Il suo intento è piuttosto quello di fornire una sorta di cronaca dal punto di vista di un ‘addetto ai lavori’, e una riflessione su quello che la mostra ci ha consegnato e permesso di approfondire circa un momento cruciale della carriera e della vita di Tiziano. Il fine ultimo di questo intervento è dunque quello di discutere questi aspetti seguendo una formula forse inconsueta, che ambisce a fornire una sorta di alternativa a quegli studiosi, appassionati e specialisti che non hanno avuto la possibilità di recarsi alla National Gallery di Londra.

Die Ausstellung ist Ergebnis eines Kooperationsprojektes des Kunstgeschichtlichen Seminars der Universität Hamburg, der Forschungsstelle Naturbilder/Images of Nature, der Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg (SUB) sowie der Kunstsammlung der Universität Göttingen unter Leitung von Iris Wenderholm und Maurice Saß. Vom 22. Oktober 2017 bis 2. September 2018 wurden mehr als 100 Kupferwerke aus den Hamburger und Göttinger Beständen in der Kunstsammlung der Universität Göttingen gezeigt. In dieser Ausstellung stellte die SUB ihre Bestände zum Thema auch dem Hamburger Publikum vor.

O movimento romântico exaltou o natural e o irracional, a beleza e sublimidade da natureza selvagem e da noite, e a "Grande Deusa". Porém, a forma como o passado foi apresentado, representa mais os desejos dos modernos sobre os antigos, do que a representação do passado em si, a qual as evidências deixam mais dúvidas do que respostas. Para compreender o tear entre evidências históricas e fenomenologias sobre o tema, apresentaremos discursos oriundos do século XIX aos dias atuais, à saber: o resgate da deusa da natureza, de Apuleio, pelos românticos; a ideia dos acadêmicos no século XIX de que havia uma única grande deusa, representada e adorada como Mãe Terra; as descobertas arqueológicas de estatuetas femininas do paleolítico, neolítico, e da idade do bronze; o desenvolvimento do arquétipo da Grande Mãe na psicologia; a arqueologia de Leroi-Gourhan e a da polêmica Marija Gimbutas, que apresentou uma religião da Deusa, que se estendeu por toda a Europa, ao Oriente Próximo e à região do Mediterrâneo como um sistema ideológico coeso e persistente; e finalmente a perspectiva de Paolo Scarpi, à qual seria improvável que houvesse no neolítico uma ideia de divindade, portanto, o tema da "deusa mãe" seria um "mito" científico.

M. Furio Camillo è senza dubbio la maggiore personalità del mondo romano nella prima metà
del IV sec. a.C.: sulla base delle fonti e delle evidenze archeologiche relative a questo periodo è
stata condotta una ricerca1, che ha consentito di sottolineare evidenti parallelismi che lo legano a
Servio Tullio.

Das Unheimliche wird in Elfriede Jelineks „Die Kinder der Toten“ (1995) radikal ausbuchstabiert. Der Roman spielt in einer Berglandschaft, die sich zu Beginn als eine horrorhafte Lebensumwelt der Untoten, Doppelgänger, Vampire und anderer grauenerregender Gestalten erweist. Dabei ist auffällig, dass in der bisherigen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Roman Jelineks Appropriation literarischer Muster antiker Mythen eine untergeordnete Rolle spielte. Der Umstand ist umso erstaunlicher, da bei Jelineks Aufnahme und Weiterführung des Konzepts des Unheimlichen typischerweise antike Elemente immer wieder auftauchen. Das kulturell Imaginäre der Antike ist nicht lediglich ein Stichwortgeber, sondern wird in die Raum- und Zeitstruktur des Romans aufgenommen und als etwas Vergangenes in die Nachbarschaft aktueller Themen gestellt. Dieses poetische Konzept ist mit drei Gestalten aus der antiken Mythologie verbunden, die zu den wichtigsten Figuren der Mediengeschichte zählen: Hermes, Diana und Narziss.

The Greek myth of Zeus (Jupiter), Kronos (Saturn), and Rhea (Earth) reveals an important role of Rhea, The Earth Mother Goddess as the initiator and strength in the war of the foundation between the Titans and the Olympians where she makes it possible for Zeus and the Olympians to overthrow Kronos and the Titans. The importance of the role of the Earth Mother Goddess in the changing from one culture to another is emphasized as relevant and necessary, and the conjunction of the planets as seen from earth tells the story of the change.

This volume is the first in series of works detailing the archaeological investigations of the ager Rusellanus, in coastal southern Etruria, undertaken by the Alberese Archaeological Project.

It focuses on the Roman temple and sanctuary dedicated to Diana Umbronensis, located at Scoglietto (Alberese – GR) on the ancient Tyrrhenian coast. In so doing it adds to the study of trade and settlement networks in ancient Italy, and provides new data on the character of Roman and late antique Etruria.

The book discusses the changing aspect and character of the sanctuary over approximately eight centuries – from its foundation in the mid-2nd century BC and substantial refurbishment in the Antonine period, to its destruction in the 4th century AD and the varied use and reuse of the site through the following two centuries. It includes archaeological, historical and landscape studies, as well as detailed architectural and material culture studies for a composite interpretation of the site and its history.

Questo volume è il primo di una serie di lavori che descrive le indagini archeologiche nell’ager Rusellanus, nell’Etruria costiera meridionale, intraprese dal Progetto Archeologico Alberese.

Questo libro si concentra sui templi Romani e il santuario dedicato a Diana Umbronensis, localizzati presso Scoglietto (Alberese – GR) sull’antica costa Tirrenica e fornisce nuovi dati sullo studio dei commerci e della rete insediativa nell’Italia antica e dell’Etruria romana e tardoantica.

Al suo interno sono discussi gli aspetti di cambiamento del santuario lungo i suoi otto secoli di storia – dalla sua fondazione nel corso della metà del II secolo a.C. e il sostanziale restauro dell’età Antonina, sino alla sua distruzione nel IV secolo d.C. e i vari usi e riusi del sito nei due secoli successivi.

Am 5. August 1983 wurde bei einer Ausgrabung im Zentrum von Maastricht, auf dem Gelände, auf dem Hotel Derlon neu errichtet werden sollte, ein bedeutender Fund gemacht. Innerhalb eines heiligen Bezirks, eines temenos, wurden sowohl Fundament und Sockel als auch Teile des Schaftes und des bekrönenden Iuppiterbildes eines mächtigen Iuppiterpfeilers entdeckt. Die Bildhauerarbeit des Pfeilers steht auf hohem Niveau. Ein prägefrischer Sesterz des Marcus Aurelius aus dem Jahr 16I n.
