Complementary analysis of satellite mission data (altimetry, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometers (MODIS)) and climate fields over 2000–2009 was conducted to investigate the variability of the water cover surfaces and the geographical source of water inflowing into the Lake Poopó system. The results suggest that over the time span of 2000–2009 a great part of the variability of the Poopó system originates from geographic sources other than Lake Titicaca. Possible alternative causes include climate change inducing increased temperatures and greater evaporation rates along the Altiplano; increased glacier and snow melting over the Andes Cordillera; and a potential increased anthropogenic water use (such as irrigation, minery, etc.) throughout the path of the Desaguadero River (which connects lakes Titicaca and Poopó). This change in the hydrology of this region could lead to a collapse of water supplies and endanger the already fragile Poopó system as well as the regional socioeconomic system, which closely depends upon it.

Since 1997, Poeciliopsis infans Woolman 1894 has been recognized as a new inhabitant of Lake Patzcuaro, Michoacan in Central Mexico. Between February 1997 and October 1998, nine fish samples were collected at Lake Patzcuaro. Morphometric and meristic counts were conducted on a random selection of 40 organisms of both sexes of Poeciliopsis infans. Males of these viviparous fish posses a modified anal fin called gonopodium. The characteristic hemal spine on the 18 th caudal vertebra for this species is described herein and the bony components of the gonopodial structure and suspensoria that together comprise the gonopodial system, which is important for taxonomic studies at various levels of classification were reviewed. Poeciliopsis infans displays a high degree of sexual dimorphism in body shape and anal fin anatomy with the most conspicuous difference observed in anal fin height, which averages 40% of Sl in males and 17% in females. Comparisons between male and female anal fins are described herein as well as the possible impacts of this species on Lake Patzcuaro fish fauna.

The water from lakes and reservoirs are collected, treated and supplied for public distribution by Government agencies in India. Water from open dug wells (Groundwater) is one of the major resources for individual residents. Studies on physicochemical parameters of groundwater of open dug wells and surface water of Waddepally Lake in Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh State are carried out and the results are presented in this paper. The groundwater samples were collected from 15 open dug wells in an area of 4 km from the lake. The lake water samples from 4 different locations were taken from top surface, 1m and 2m depth wise. Currently in Indonesia there are 840 large lakes, 735 small lakes and 162 reservoirs, totally make up as wide as 1.8 million ha of water body with water volume of 500 million m 3 . The major environmental problems are sedimentation, water contamination, habitat destruction and overexploitation. The problems are triggered by inharmony interaction between lakes and the adjacent catchment area. Ecohydrology encourages effort making to solve the problems integratively by increasing the understanding of key processes in the inland water carrying capacity and resilience to the environmental stresses. Some efforts to implement this ecohydrological paradigm have been conducted to find a solution for the lake problems. For examples, concept of Lake Limboto rehabilitation by means of ecohydrological based engineering has accounted to increase the water retention of up to 15%, while the fish productivity increases by 300 tons per year. Similarly in Lake Semayang-Melintang, ecohydrological engineering has been recommended to strengthen the habitat resilience, particularly for fishes against severe water fluctuation.

The present study objectively conducted to analysis the physico-chemical parameters of Sahapura Lake. For this study the water samples were collected from five sampling stations during the June to November 2006. The range of physico-chemical parameters were observed Temperature (24.7-36.6) 0 C, Conductivity (280-380) µ mhos /cum , Total Dissolved Solid (345 -388) mg/l, pH (7.0-8.6), Free CO 2 8.9-16 mg/l, Free alkalinity (14-31) mg/l, Total alkalinity (120-265) mg/l, DO (3.2-7.5) mg/l, BOD (2.6-15.2) mg/l, COD (14-45) mg/l, Chloride (10-39) mg/l, Calcium hardness (89-135) mg/l, Total hardness (100-289) mg/l, Nitrate-nitrogen (0.60-2.9) mg/l during the study.The analysed result is compared with permissible limits as prescribed by WHO, BIS for drinking water quality. It was concluded that temperature, pH, total alkalinity, dissolved oxygen. biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, calcium hardness beyond the prescribed limits of WHO and BIS. It is indicating for increasing in pollution of Sahapura Lake, which need control industrial waste, sewage discharge and human activity in the water body.

Nirmal Lake is about 50 kms. from Mumbai, situated in Nirmal village near Vasai town, Thane district, Maharashtra at 19° 23´ 29´´ N and 72° 46´ 57´´ E. Nirmal Lake comprises of 2 ponds namely Vimal and Malai that are separated by a tar-road for public use. The two ponds are inter-connected with each other by an internal drainage system. The lake waters are utilized for a variety of purposes including ritual ceremonies, domestic and agricultural purposes. Water serves many beneficial purposesprimarily drinking and others such as domestic, industrial, agricultural purposes, for stock and wild-life, propagation of aquatic life, aesthetic enjoyment etc. Regular monitoring of waters is of paramount importance as a relationship can be established between different parameters that can indicate the status of a habitat. The current investigations are carried out to analyze certain specific parameters required to establish and notify the quality and sustainability for varied purposes. Our observations suggest that by adopting and implementing modern scientific-cum-technological measures, the lake can be reconstituted for a variety of purposes.

Lakes are versatile ecosystems and they are under the threat of eutrophication and siltation. The physical characteristics of a lake provide some insight into the status of the lake. Satellite imagery analysis now plays a prominent role in the quick assessment of characteristics of a lake system in a vast area. This study is an attempt to assess the water temperature, depth, and turbidity level of a lake system (Akkulam-Veli lake, Kerala, India) using IRS P6-LISS-III imagery. Field data were collected on the date of the overpass of the satellite. For the assessment of water temperature from satellite imagery, regression equation using spectral ratio (green/red bands) is found to yield superior results than the simple regression equation and multiple regression equation. For predicting the water depth, radiance in green and red bands can be used whereas that for turbidity, radiance in green and SWIR can be used. IRS P6-LISS-III imagery can be effectively used for the assessment of the physical characteristics of a lake system at a low cost.

Based on the data from scholars papers but principally in (1), I've made a GIS data set for the late Pleistocene lake cycles on the southern Bolivian Altiplano.

I've prepared three different data sets: two to work with, and another Google Earth data set only for view the results. Also as an end work I've made some videos showing animations of lakes up fill (different lakes), in these videos 'the direction in which the lake fills' are not real in all cases, see (1) to elucidate the up fill direction at the Laca hydrologic divide for each paleolake.

The core work for extracting the shorelines has been done in the GRASS console with the r.lake GRASS module ..., a lot of command lines, see the hist directory in the GRASS project (in one of the huge datasets), here you can see all the commands used to do the work.

Pakistan is located at the cross-roads of plate boundaries, experiencing multiple hazards of earthquake, flood, glacier lake outburst flooding, drought, salinization, water-logging and recurrent landslides. This paper attempts to examine the impact of 2010 Attaabad landslide on livelihood of upper stream population of upper Hunza, Pakistan. A total 128 questionnaires were filled in from the disaster affected victims. However, secondary data were obtained from the Geological survey of Pakistan, National disaster management authority and Focus Humanitarian Assistance for Pakistan. The upstream population of upper Hunza lost their major source of income from potato which is due to landslide induced lake and lake water inundated into agricultural land and submerged Karakoram highway. High-resolution bathymetrical data from the Lovatnet lake, western Norway, reveal a diverse morphology including traces from historic and prehistoric landslides. Onshore LiDAR and selected seismic profiles support the interpretation. Our data from the lake show significant debris lobes below Ramnefjellet that was the source of the well-known rock avalanche and tsunami disasters in 1905 and 1936 which caused a total of 134 casualties. The debris is divided into three main lobes reaching a total length of 1.8 km along the lake bottom from the impact site, and diffuse lobe features below the Bødalsdelta. Frontal deformations are minor. Lobes on the basin plain have a volume of more than 1.2 × 10 6 m 3 including debris entrained from the surrounding slopes and lake floor. The entire lake volume was set in motion during the catastrophic events. Returning bottom flows transported debris into the lake where lobes and minor, distinct mounds were deposited up to c. 1.5 km from the lake's outlet.. The mounds could be of anthropogenic origin, and possibly include a vessel that disappeared. Erosion and smaller failures occurred elsewhere in the lake basin. Fan-delta morphologies are varied, with ridges and protuberances, reflecting a sedimentation pattern interrupted by mass-wasting or other events in the deltas and/or their catchments. This is especially clear for the Raudi, Hellsete and Bødalen deltas, but minor protuberances are also found in other deltas. The data also reveal traces from large and previously undocumented landslide events. Gravitational deposits generally dominate the steep slopes and glacial landforms are scarce. The study demonstrates the importance of linking onshore and offshore morphological datasets in order to obtain an overview over process variability in fjord-type lakes of importance for further investigation and hazard assessment.

Phytoplankton is well-known as microorganism that can undergo photosynthesis and can only be found in aquatic ecosystems. Universitas Indonesia (UI), Depok, has six lakes: Kenanga, Agathis, Mahoni, Puspa, Ulin, and Salam Lake. Those lakes are proved to have an important role in regulating water circulation in UI and surroundings. However, study about the role of those lakes in storing carbon which is resulted from photosynthesis done by phytoplankton has not been conducted yet. We have done this study by using the light-and-dark bottle method in five kinds of depth in each lake. That method is used to obtain net productivity (NP) value then the result converted into the carbon sequestration rate (CSR).

The oxygen isotope composition of diatom silica (d 18 O diatom ) is increasingly being used to reconstruct climate from marine and lacustrine sedimentary archives. Although diatoms are assumed to precipitate their frustule in isotopic equilibrium with their surrounding water, it is unclear whether internal processes of a given species affect the fractionation of oxygen between the water and the diatom. We present d 18 O diatom data from two diatom size fractions (3-38 and >38 mm) characterized by different species in a sediment core from Heart Lake, Alaska. Differences in d 18 O diatom between the two size fractions varies from 0 to 1.2‰, with a mean offset of 0.01‰ (n ¼ 20). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirms our samples consist of pure biogenic silica (SiO 2 ) and d 18 O diatom trends are not driven by contamination. The maximum offset is outside the range of error, but the mean is within analytical error of the technique (AE 1.06‰), demonstrating no discernible speciesdependent fractionation in d 18 O diatom . We conclude that lacustrine d 18 O diatom measurements offer a reliable and valuable method for reconstructing d 18 O water . Considering the presence of small offsets in our two records, we advise interpreting shifts in d 18 O diatom only where the magnitude of change is greater than the combined analytical error.

A bloom of Euglena was observed at the surface of Dal Lake, Kashmir, in the last week of June, 1991. The species exhibited a circadian colour change, from green at dawn to blood-red during the day and again green at dusk. The present new species is, therefore, named Euglena shafiqii. It is distinguished from the cogenus by the structure and occurrence of Z-tubules, chromatophores, nucleus shape and by a coloured pulsating structure at the posterior end. A stress induced transformation from an elongated egg to a round shape is also peculiar. The light absorption spectra of the pigment showed λ maxima at 416, 441, 467 and 485 nm. The red bloom was found in the part of the lake basins which receives waste effluents.

Sikkim is tiny but beauty. The roadblock has limited the accessibility of these food supplies and inflated prices beyond what most people can afford. The landslide induced lake teaches important lessons about hazard assessment, disaster management and most importantly, public communication during crises.

This study aims at examining local community perception on the management of the Lake Ayamaru as a potential tourism attraction in Maybart Regency, West Papua Province. The results of the study show that the local community is able to recognize the problems faced by the lake. Some of the problems mentioned by the local community were decrease of local wisdom and environmental problems caused by human activities. Tourism can support economy and can be accepted by the local people by considering some basic aspects, such as community involvement and environmental preservation. The local community thinks that other than the natural resources, the culture of the people living around the lake can also become the attraction when it is sinergically developed with the effort to develop sustainable tourism in the lake. The results of the study show that this local community living in remote area has much concern on the effort to conserve nature and sees tourism as one of the alternatives in the sustainable uses of the lake.

Mohoş Swamp is an oligotroph swamp, formed in a volcanic crater on the site of a former lake, which permanently changes. Using a series of modern methods such as ultrasound bathymetry, we want to set up a reference base so that in the future one can be able to determine the rhythm and direction of the development of this complex ecosystem, both in terms of morph metrics and chemical hydrology parameters point of view. Bathymetry and geomorfological study represents the most important stage because it makes it possible to establish the concrete characteristics of the investigated lakes as well as their placement.

Environmental risk about water quality of lakes in Kurtna landscape reserve (Estonia) by the study of water temperature and dissolved oxygen. The Kurtna reserve (North-Eastern Estonia) includes about forty lakes of hydro-glacial origin, among which the most are kettle hole lakes. Their level and the quality of water are conditioned by aquifers, which are threatened by industrial activities (sand quarry, peat production and oil shale excavation). The paper presents results of a field campaign in March 2013, for measuring water temperature, dissolved oxygen and salinity in two ice-covered lakes (Martiska and Nomme). Martiska is a closed lake. The Upper Triassic Chinle Formation and the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation preserve a record of lacustrine deposition along the western margin of tropical Pangaea and post-Pangaean North America. The lake deposits in these formations contain archives of sedimentary and geochemical paleoclimatic indicators, paleoecological data, and characteristic stratal architecture that provide glimpses into the evolution of basins linked to global- and continental-scale tectonic events and processes, and the establishment of a mosaic of continental paleoecosystems. Innovative conceptualization of ecosystem’s biomachinery (a new scientific term that was proposed by the author; it means ecological mechanisms that include biological communities and biodiversity) which improves water quality. The innovative experimental data analysis, concepts, and generalizations in this article provide the fundamental elements of the new qualitative theory of biocontrol of water quality in a systematized form. The theory covers water self-purification in freshwater and marine ecosystems. The theory is supported by the results of the author’s experimental studies of the effects exerted by some chemical pollutants including synthetic surfactants, detergents, and other xenobiotics on aquatic organisms. The new fundamental conceptualization provides a basis for remediation of polluted aquatic ecosystems including purification of water bodies and streams, and briefly present the qualitative theory of the self-purification mechanism of aquatic ecosystems, phytoremediation and other types of technologies.

Pakistan is located at the cross-roads of plate boundaries, experiencing multiple hazards of earthquake, flood, glacier lake outburst flooding, drought, salinization, water-logging and recurrent landslides. This paper attempts to examine the impact of 2010 Attaabad landslide on livelihood of upper stream population of upper Hunza, Pakistan. A total 128 questionnaires were filled in from the disaster affected victims. However, secondary data were obtained from the Geological survey of Pakistan, National disaster management authority and Focus Humanitarian Assistance for Pakistan. The upstream population of upper Hunza lost their major source of income from potato which is due to landslide induced lake and lake water inundated into agricultural land and submerged Karakoram highway. The Upper Triassic Chinle Formation and the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation preserve a record of lacustrine deposition along the western margin of tropical Pangaea and post-Pangaean North America. The lake deposits in these formations contain archives of sedimentary and geochemical paleoclimatic indicators, paleoecological data, and characteristic stratal architecture that provide glimpses into the evolution of basins linked to global-and continental-scale tectonic events and processes, and the establishment of a mosaic of continental paleoecosystems. This fi eld trip highlights the lacustrine and associated fl uvial deposits of the Monitor Butte Member of the Chinle Formation and the Tidwell and Brushy Basin Members of the Morrison Formation in the southern part of the Colorado Plateau region, with emphases on: (1) sedimentary facies analysis and paleogeography of the paleolakes; (2) stratal architecture and high-frequency sequence stratigraphy; (3) recognition of lake basinfi ll types; and (4) paleontology and ichnology of lake strata and their paleoecologic, paleohydrological, and paleoclimatic interpretation.
