Ecolinguistics: the state of the art and future horizons

In this article we do two things: in the first half, we trace the emergence and development of ecological linguistics, or ecolinguistics, from the early 1970s. Having contrasted the ecological endeavour with the form-based traditions of 20th century linguistics, we discern four particular ways in which the ecology of language has been conceptualised: as a symbolic ecology (Section 2), a natural ecology (Section 3), a sociocultural ecology (Section 4), and a cognitive ecology (Section 5). These four approaches are described and discussed in detail. In the second half of the state of the art, we outline future horizons for the discipline. The foundation for this outline is our plea for a unified ecological language science (Section 6). This unified program pursues a naturalised agenda in the language sciences by exploring the ecological embeddedness of language and linguistic interaction (Section 7). In particular, this section presents the extended ecology hypothesis as one possible way of understanding ecolinguistics as a naturalised science of language. Having presented this view, we argue that it can place the four different traditions mentioned within a unified ecolinguistic framework (Section 8). This framework includes a naturalised foundation for those concerns that characterise the ecolinguistic enterprise, e.g. the exploitation of natural resources, empowerment of marginalized social groups, and the peaceful coexistence of languages and cultures in multicultural communities. In the conclusion (Section 9), we call for further interaction between ecological schools and traditions.

A Critical Review of Ecolinguistic Studies in Iran

Ecolinguistics first emerged in the 1990s and, based on the International Ecolinguistics Association's definition, it strives to explore " the role of language in the life-sustaining interactions of humans, other species and the physical environment " (IEA, 2018). Traditionally, two major research routes have developed worldwide to deal with the endangerment of biodiversity as well as language communities from an ecolinguistic standpoint. However, the new line of research as introduced by Stibbe (2015), seeks to uncover the stories behind human's decisions and actions and their impacts on " life " as a whole. This way we will be able to convert destructive stories into constructive ones to respect, revive and save all forms of life. For the Iranian linguistic community, however, this relatively new field has to go a long way to be known. It is only twenty years that some scholars have tried to research ecolinguistics, although there is great potential in Iran, considering the current challenges the whole country is facing with regard to environmental issues as well as depleting resources. Iranian ecolinguistic studies are far too distant from similar international efforts, but can generally be divided into two categories of morphological and discourse studies. In this paper, we review nearly all Iranian publications bearing the name " ecolinguistics " and, at the end, we suggest toponymy studies and positive discourse analysis as two important lines of research within this branch of linguistics.

Abagusii traditional environmental knowledge and HIV-AIDS management final

Multidisciplinary and multisectoral interventions are necessary for the management of chronic conditions such as HIV/AIDS. One such intervention is the promotion of socially responsible teaching. Anchored within an eclectic theoretical framework involving traditional environmental knowledge, the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, and Vygotsky’s theory of thought, language and culture, this paper analyses the link between Abagusii traditional environmental knowledge and management of HIV/AIDS. Seven groups of people living with HIV/AIDS were engaged in focus group discussions on the management of HIV/AIDS treatment adherence through sustainable production and use of natural products. The paper reveals that the Abagusii have rich ecological knowledge on the production and use of natural products, which could improve treatment outcomes of people living with HIV/AIDS. This ecological knowledge can be harnessed, documented and ploughed into ELT materials for English Language Teaching. "The Stories We Live By and the Stories we won't stand by" 4th International Conference on Ecolinguistics, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, 12th-16th August

Current dominant narratives of economic growth, consumerism, and anthropocentric views on human existence, to name a few, are behind the driving forces responsible for the increasing destruction of the very own ecological systems that all life depends on. By utilising tools of Discourse Analysis whilst adopting an ecological perspective, the free online course The Stories We Live By offers a practical and accessible framework in which stories can be critically evaluated, questioned, and resisted. Crucially, students are encouraged to apply their newly acquired theoretical insights to search for alternative stories to live by. Such is the emphasis on the student’s interpretation and evaluation of the course that in order to assess the effectiveness of the latter, the impacts would need to be assessed in terms of both behavioural and practical changes in the everyday life of the individual. This is a critical and non-trivial issue. While current approaches of impact assessment beyond academia can be measured more readily in the sciences, it is harder to assess whether, how, and to what extent humanities research produces change in society; arguably, the digital format of the course adds to the complexity of assessing its impact. In this study, the authors aim to draw attention on the inherent value of the dissemination of traditionally academic tools beyond academia while also contributing with original insights into the methodological aspects of impact assessment in the humanities. By combining both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, this presentation provides an innovative tool to effectively measure impact which renders itself suitable for a wider range of disciplines across both traditional and digital humanities.
