Library collection development

Through 2015 and into 2016, Canadian academic libraries' collections budgets were severely strained due to the steady decline of the CAD/USD exchange rate. As most subscription fees for electronic resources (e-resources) are billed in US dollars, the falling value of the Canadian dollar significantly reduced libraries' purchasing power. This study is based on a survey of the English-speaking member institutions of the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN), a Canadian collections consortium, carried out to determine the impact of the poor exchange rate on collection development and how libraries are coping with new budgetary pressures. Librarians from 33 universities provided survey responses. Of these, 22 participated in telephone interviews to further discuss concerns and ideas regarding the current crisis. The study finds that all participant libraries have taken actions to address the budgetary shortfall, including cancelling serial and database subscriptions, negotiating lower costs with vendors, purchasing fewer monographs, and soliciting additional funding from their institutions. While the financial strain resulting from exchange rate fluctuations is indeed a significant problem for which solutions should be sought, several respondents stressed that it only exacerbates the ongoing inflation of e-resource subscriptions. This deeper and enduring issue, which is expected to outlast the present exchange rate crisis, is enabled by an inherently flawed scholarly publishing system. Thus, librarians engaged in discussions with their wider academic communities concerning collections budgets should not focus exclusively on the exchange rate but should leverage the opportunity to explore alternatives to the current scholarly communication model. If solutions exist, they will likely only be achieved through the support of faculty and university administrators, as well as cooperation among post-secondary institutions and library consortia.

Este artículo, “Cristina Peri Rossi: cartas a su madre. Los avatares de la entrada forzada a la globalización” (pp. 63-72)  se enfoca en las cartas de la escritora uruguaya Cristina Peri Rossi (1941-), exiliada en España en 1972 y luego nacionalizada en dicho país, a su madre, Julieta Rossi. Las cartas se estudian en el contexto de la creación de colecciones de literatura e historia latinoamericanas en la moderna Biblioteca Hesburgh de la University of Notre Dame. Las cartas de Peri-Rossi que integran la colección están comprendidas entre el 27 de enero de 1981 y el 22 de abril de 2002 y las de su madre entre el 16 de julio de 1980 y el 21 de mayo de 2005. El objetivo del artículo es mostrar cómo a través del epistolario de Peri Rossi a su madre, la escritora deja ver las dificultades del quehacer literario como ciudadana forzada de la globalización. Estos avatares no le son particulares a Peri Rossi, sino que los comparte con los miembros de su generación.

This article, "Cristina Peri Rossi: letters to her mother. The avatars of the entrance to globalization "(pp. 63-72) focuses on the letters of the Uruguayan writer Cristina Peri Rossi (1941-), exiled in Spain in 1972 and then nationalized in that country, to her mother, Julieta Rossi. The letters are studied in the context of the creation of collections of Latin American literature and history in the modern Hesburgh Library of the University of Notre Dame. Peri-Rossi letters that make up the collection are between January 27, 1981 and April 22, 2002 and those of her mother between July 16, 1980 and May 21, 2005. The aim of the article is to show how through the correspondence of Peri Rossi with her mother, the writer reveals the difficulties of being a literary author as a forced citizen of globalization. These avatars are not specific to Peri Rossi, but shared with the members of her generation.

Il saggio segue un percorso di analisi diverso e parallelo resosi evidente durante una ricerca sui
criteri biblioteconomici e i metodi per la selezione delle raccolte delle biblioteche, svolta al fine di
accertare l’attendibilità dei cataloghi online come fonti di informazioni sugli autori e sulle opere per la
valutazione delle monografie scientifiche. Partendo da una ricostruzione del dibattito biblioteconomico
italiano del secondo Novecento intorno ai temi della formazione e dello sviluppo delle raccolte, attraverso
il confronto con la letteratura internazionale, il contributo esamina i ruoli dei diversi attori e le mutate
condizioni bibliografiche delle collezioni nel passaggio dalla gestione culturale alla gestione
biblioteconomica del patrimonio delle biblioteche in Italia.




The essay follows a different and parallel analysis that became evident during a previous research on
library science criteria and methods for collection development, conducted in order to ascertain the
reliability of online catalogues as information sources with reference to authors and works for the
scientific monograph assessment. Starting from a reconstruction of the Italian librarianship debate of
the second half of the twentieth century around issues of library collection development, developed
through the comparison with international literature, the paper examines the different actors’ roles
and the changed conditions of bibliographic collections during transition from cultural to librarianship
management of Italian libraries’ heritage.

After thirty-six years of biennial updates, the authors take great pride in being able to publish the nineteenth version (2001) of the "Brandon/Hill Selected List of Print Books and Journals for the Small Medical Library." This list of 630 books and 143 journals is intended as a selection guide for health sciences libraries or similar facilities. It can also function as a core collection for a library consortium. Books and journals are categorized by subject; the book list is followed by an author/editor index, and the subject list of journals, by an alphabetical title listing. Due to continuing requests from librarians, a "minimal core list" consisting of 81 titles has been pulled out from the 217 asterisked (*) initial-purchase books and marked with daggers (dagger *) before the asterisks. To purchase the entire collection of 630 books and to pay for 143 2001 journal subscriptions would require $124,000. The cost of only the asterisked items, books and journals...

People of the Founding Era: A Prosopographical Approach provides both biographical statements and identically structured data sets for each individual noted within the database, allowing for study of social and political connections as well as similarities or differences across groups. Most of the 12,000 people represented in the database were associated in some way with one or more of the Founding Fathers. The database, currently in public beta testing and freely accessible, is part of the University of Virginia's subscription-based Rotunda platform. The simple search mechanism found on the opening page defaults to a search of people within the database. More focused searches related to slavery, places, gender and occupations are also possible by selecting one of the four icons/buttons above the search box. While current searchability is functional, it could be enhanced by allowing cross-facet queries. Detailed individual records include a biographical statement as well as data set elements noting gender, occupation, birth and death details, if known. In addition, each record contains a connection graph showing how the person is associated with other individuals noted in the database. Since most of the 12,000 individuals represented in the database are connected in some way with one or more of the Founding Fathers, each graph is a powerful tool for understanding personal, societal and institutional relationships. Records for connections represented in the graph may be quickly accessed by right clicking on a name. Hyperlinked citations to original documents are also found within each biographical record, however, access to the additional resources requires a subscription to ^IRotunda^R. While the majority of information contained within the database relates to men, women are represented in 14% of the entries and slaves account for less than 1% of the entries. Future plans for the second edition/release of the database include adding entries for all slaves indexed in the ^IFounding Fathers^R volumes. Overall, People of the Founding Era: A Prosopographical Approach is a rich resource for students, researchers and others interested in American studies between 1713 and 1815. Summing Up: Recommended. This study discusses the importance of collection development in libraries. Various factors have to be taken into consideration while developing a qualitative collection for the benefit of the users. These factors include policies, principles, techniques and procedures, problems associated with collection development. It is equally important to evaluate the collections to assess its use and moreover the usefulness of collection development in electronic environment. Academic libraries which are considered to be nerve centers of academic and research activities must help achieve the academic goals of their parent institutions and this is possible only through developing adequate library collection. Collection development is one of the important and challenging library management activities. Collection development is a process of selecting, ordering and payment of information materials for the use of the users in the library. Authors conclude that, library professionals need to take utmost care in developing a balanced collection, which enhances the quality of the library. The study is attempted on the basis of experience.

The objective of this study was to identify trends in academic health sciences libraries (AHSLs) as they adapt to the shift from a print knowledgebase to an increasingly digital knowledgebase. This research was funded by the 2003 David A. Kronick Traveling Fellowship. Methods: The author spent a day and a half interviewing professional staff at each library. The questionnaire used was sent to the directors of each library in advance of the visit, and the directors picked the staff to be interviewed and set up the schedule. Results: Seven significant trends were identified. These trends are part of the shift of AHSLs from being facility and print oriented with a primary focus on their role as repositories of a print-based knowledgebase to a new focus on their role as the center or ''nexus'' for the organization, access, and use of an increasingly digital-based knowledgebase. Conclusion: This paper calls for a national effort to develop a new model or structure for health sciences libraries to more effectively respond to the challenges of access and use of a digital knowledgebase, much the same way the National Library of Medicine did in the 1960s and 1970s in developing and implementing the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. The paper then concludes with some examples or ideas for research to assist in this process.

Secara fisik CD-R merupakan CD polikarbonat kosong berdiameter 120 mm sama seperti CD ROM. Awalnya CD-R dilapisi emas sebagai media refleksinya.Permukaan reflektif pada lapisan emas tidak memiliki depresi atau lekukan – lekukan fisik seperti halnya pada lapisan aluminium kemudian disempurnakan dengan cara dengan menambahkan lapisan pewarna di antara polikarbonat dan lapisan emas. Jenis pewarna yang sering digunakan adalah cyanine yang berwarna hijau dan pthalocynine yang berwarna oranye kekuningkuningan.Pewarna ini sama seperti yang digunakan dalam film fotografi sehingga menjadikan Kodak dan Fuji produsen utama CD-R Sebelum digunakan pewarna bersifat transparan sehingga sinar laser berdaya tinggi dapat menembus sampai ke lapisan emas saat proses penulisan. Saat sinar laser mengenai titik pewarna, sinar ini memanaskannya sehingga pewarna terurai melepaskan ikatan kimianya membentuk suatu noda. Noda – noda inilah sebagai representasi data yang nantinya dapat dikenali oleh foto-detektor apabila disinari dengan laser berdaya rendah saat proses pembacaan.

Open Access dapat diterjemahkan sebagai akses bebas adalah sebuah fenomena masa kini yang berkaitan dengan dua hal: keberadaan teknologi digital dan akses ke artikel jurnal ilmiah dalam bentuk digital. Internet dan pembuatan artikel jurnal secara digital telah memungkinkan perluasan dan kemudahan akses, dan kenyataan inilah yang ikut melahirkan Open Access (disingkat OA), atau lebih tepatnya Gerakan OA (Open Access Movement). Secara lebih spesifik, OA merujuk kepada aneka literatur digital yang tersedia secara terpasang (online), gratis (free of charge), dan terbebas dari semua ikatan atau hambatan hak cipta atau lisensi. Artinya, ada sebuah penyedia yang meletakkan berbagai berkas, dan setiap berkas itu disediakan untuk siapa saja yang dapat mengakses. Berdasarkan pengertian itu, maka OA otomatis juga membebaskan hambatan akses yang biasanya muncul karena biaya (entah itu biaya berlangganan, biaya lisensi, atau membayar-setiap-melihat alias pay-per-view fees). Dari definisi diatas, dapat diambil kesimpulan, Open Access adalah salah satu upaya penyebaran artikel atau informasi di media internet atau di suatu lokal data yang dapat diakses oleh siapapun , tanpa memandang apakah pencari informasi tersebut laki-laki atau perempuan, dewasa atau anak-anak, dan lain sebagainya. Sehingga memungkinkan informasi diakses baik berdasarkan tujuan yang baik, maupun tujuan yang lain, yang kadangkala merugikan orang lain, misalnya mengganggu privasi seseorang melalui media sosial. Akses pun sangat mudah, tanpa harus registrasi, membayar atau syarat lainnya .

Academic and public library collections are developed based on the needs of the communities that surround them. Technology has increased the way users access information, and the way libraries offer information to their users. However, the accessibility of electronic resources for users with print disabilities remains an issue that has yet to have an equitable remedy. This paper identifies the challenges of visually impaired users, the developments in law, the current state of accessibility in academic and public library collections policies, and the current formats and products that are leading the way.

What makes books “rare” is problematic and endlessly debatable. But we all know one of the main causes of books becoming “scarce.” People throw them away. In library parlance this process is politely called “weeding,” “deaccessioning,” “discarding,” “deselecting,” “withdrawing,” and the like. But to call a spade a spade, it is no more than dumping the books. They are left on carts in library vestibules to be taken for free or sold in grocery bags for 10¢ each, and thus are dispatched to uncertain fates and probably eventual demise. Only if we are lucky are they traded to other repositories or advertised on listservs as “Free to a Good Home.”

Collection Development is the first and foremost activity of the library and as such collection development policy is the guideline for developing both print and e-resources collection in an academic library setup. Hence an attempt has been made in this paper to highlight the concept, objectives, functions and policies of collection development and its strategies involved. It also includes, Guidelines of collection development in the context of General Criteria, Content, Access, Design, Cost and Pricing has been discussed in the study.

Miklós Jankovich, dieser bedeutende ungarische Polyhistor, Antiquitätensammler und nicht zuletzt Bibliophile des 19. Jahrhunderts ist spätestens seit Berlász’ grundlegendem Aufsatz über die Entstehung seines neben Antiquitäten auch an Büchern und Manuskripten besonders reichen “Museums“ als der “zweite Begründer“ der Ungarischen Nationalbibliothek in das Bewusstsein von Bibliothekaren und Forschern eingegangen. Anhand von Akten- und Archivalienrecherchen hat Berlász eine unverzichtbare Orientierungshilfe, einen Kompass zu dem bis dato ungesichteten, an bibliotheksgeschichtlichem Material jedoch reichhaltigen Jankovich-Nachlass in die Hand der Forschung gelegt. Im Rahmen seiner Jankovich-Studien hat Berlász ein weiteres, unerforschtes Terrain betreten, als er sich vornahm, anhand von noch zu den Lebzeiten des bibliophilen Sammlers veröffentlichten, [388 aber in den meisten Fällen nicht mehr als summarische Angaben enthaltenden Bekanntmachungen, und anhand der Zahl von Handschriften, die durch moderne Beschreibungskataloge zu ermitteln war, die approximative quantitative Größe des mittelalterlichen Handschriftenbestandes dieser Sammlung spekulativ zu erschließen. Zwar war er von der Existenz unterschiedlicher Katalogwerke bestens unterrichtet, unterließ es aber, sie auf den mittelalterlichen Handschriftenbestand hin zu befragen. Besonders jene Handschriftenkataloge wären dabei einer näheren Betrachtung wert gewesen, die von Jankovich selbst angelegt und von unbekannten Personen weitergeführt wurden. Der von Berlász ermittelte Umfang der Jankovich’schen Handschriftensammlung soll im vorliegenden Aufsatz anhand der Angaben in diesen Katalogwerken geprüft werden.


Berlász Jenő a Jankovich-féle könyvtári gyűjtemények kialakulását és sorsát taglaló tanulmánya valamint az Országos Széchényi Könyvtár (OSzK) középkori héber, görög, latin, olasz, német és holland kéziratállományát leíró katalógusainak ellenére is meglepően zavaros viszonyok uralkodnak Jankovich első gyűjteménye (1792–1832) középkori kéziratokat felölelő osztálya kialakulásának időrendiségét és méreteit illetően. A Jankovich-téka mindeddig méltánytalanul elhanyagolt kéziratos katalógusainak (Quart. Lat. 2683, 3872, Fol. Lat. 37, 38) valamint a gyűjtemény nyomtatásban megjelent ismertetőinek (Fejér 1817, Mednyánszky 1821, Pertz 1831, Hänel 1839) kiértékelésével ill. az egyes kéziratok possessor-bejegyzéseinek (Ebner-Eschenbach, Reisach, Spohn stb.) figyelembevételével sikerült nagy vonalakban rekonstruálni nemcsak a kéziratgyűjtemény valamikori állagát, hanem kialakulásának főbb időrendi stádiumait is. Az áttekinthetőség kedvéért eredményeimet szinoptikus táblázat formájában is rögzítettem, amelyet az OSzK kéziratállományának valamint a különböző csereakciók (München 1895, Bécs 1932) folytán külföldre vetődött gyűjteményrészek és az említett ismertetők/kéziratkatalógusok tételenkénti összevetésével nyertem. Az első gyűjtemény katalógusainak áttanulmányozása során sikerült ugyanakkor több olyan kéziratot is felfedeznem, amelyek e gyűjtemény a Nemzeti Múzeum könyvtárának való átadása után is (1832/36) Jankovich tulajdonában maradtak, és második gyűjteményébe (1832–1844) inkorporáltattak. Ez utóbbi gyűjtemény középkori kéziratokat felölelő osztályának összetétele mindezidáig jóformán ismeretlen volt a kutatók számára, minthogy e téka 1852-es aukcióján anyagi okok miatt a meglévőnek csak egy töredéke kerülhetett a Nemzeti Múzeum könyvtárának birtokába. Hogy pontosan mely kéziratokról van szó, éppúgy tisztázásra szorul, mint az a kérdés, hogy milyen kódexeket tartalmazhatott Jankovich második gyűjteménye. Ez utóbbira derít fényt egy általam felfedezett töredékes kéziratkatalógus (Fond 16/25, fol. 7–15): segítségével lehetőség nyílik olyan kéziratok megnevezésére, amelyek az említett aukción minden valószínűség szerint magángyűjtők és számunkra ismeretlen intézmények tulajdonába jutottak és mindeddig fellelhetetlennek bizonyultak. Végül konkrét kéziratokon keresztül szemléltetem Literáti Nemes Sámuel Jankovich második tékája kialakulásában és más egyéb könyvtári gyűjtemény (Horvát István, Farkas Lajos) gazdagításában játszott szerepét: nemcsak a Literáti által felkutatott kéziratok tulajdonosi és egyéb alkalmi bejegyzései, hanem antikváriusunk 1841. évi három körútjának útinaplójegyzetei is (l. Fond 16/31 v. Fol. Hung. 3006) beszédes bizonyítékai beszerző-tevékenységének.

In 1990, the Republican Scientific-Medical Library (RSML) of the Ministry of Health of Armenia in collaboration with the Fund for Armenian Relief created a vision of a national library network supported by information technology. This vision incorporated four goals: (1) to develop a national resource collection of biomedical literature accessible to all health professionals, (2) to develop a national network for access to bibliographic information, (3) to develop a systematic mechanism for sharing resources, and (4) to develop a national network of health sciences libraries. The original study of journal prices, using the "Brandon/ Hill Selected List of Books and Journals for the Small Medical Library," was first published in 1980 and periodically updated. This research continues to measure price increases for these titles for the periods 1996 to 1999 and 1999 to 2002. The 111 journal titles that have appeared in each published list from 1967 to 2001 were included in the study. Institutional subscription price data were gathered for each journal for the years 1996, 1999, and 2002 and were compared to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the same years. The average journal price continues to rise significantly and is independent of the CPI. The study found that prices have jumped 51.9% from 1996 to 1999 and 32% from 1999 to 2002, which is consistent with nearly every recent journal price study. The author talks about the collection development policy of the National Library of China, and hopes to solve some difficulties in acquiring foreign languages books published in neighboring countries.

Anhand der gedruckten und handgeschriebenen Kataloge lässt sich die Bestandsentwicklung der Handschriftensammlung in drei unterschiedlichen Zeitpunkten nachzeichnen. Die von Fejér, Mednyánszky und Pertz erstellten Verzeichnisse erlauben mit ihren Handschriftennennungen einen Blick in den Stand, den die Sammlung bis 1821 erreicht hat. Den von Jankovich selbst angelegten Katalogwerken sind zahlreiche Handschriften zu entnehmen, die um 1830 mit Sicherheit zum Bestand der Sammlung gehört haben. Die große Zahl der unter den Späteinträgen des Fol. Lat. 37 befindlichen Kodizes kann entweder damit erklärt werden, dass manche dieser Handschriften im Rahmen der von Jankovich geleisteten Katalogisierungen übergangen wurden oder sie dokumentieren eine Bestandsentwicklung, die in dem Zeitraum zwischen der Erstellung der genannten Kataloge und dem Verkauf der Sammlung an das Nationalmuseum stattgefunden hat. Dass es zu solchen Neuerwerbungen kam, werde ich an einer konkreten Gruppe von Handschriften veranschaulichen.

The paper gives a quantitative analysis of Plan funds that the Goa University Library has apportioned for purchase of books on the various subjects / departments and the number of books added using the allotment during 2013-18. The analysis is made first by grouping the subjects based on the five Faculties in the University and then by the individual subjects / departments. Based on the data on the number of books added and allotment spent, the authors have estimated the unit cost of books in each subject and prepared a list of the subjects of study based on the decreasing sequence of unit cost of books in the subject.

Background and purpose : Throughout his career, Leslie Morton was interested in international developments in health librarianship. In memory of the work he did in this field, the authors examine current developments in international health librarianship and describe some current themes. Procedures : The authors draw from their combined experience in international activities and the published information available from selected library associations and related organizations. Findings : Although many of the major health library associations around the world are tackling agendas specific to their own country, issues of international concern are emerging in common. These are grouped around globalization, partnerships and co-operation, electronic access, especially open access, and working with the developing world in a number of different ways. Of course, the basis of all of these initiatives is to improve the health of the population by providing the best possible access to materials. Conclusions : Professional associations can provide a useful institutional infrastructure for addressing issues of international interest. Librarians should encourage their associations to develop these international initiatives and to seek out new and innovative ways to work together across international boundaries.

Lat 300 in particular.

The English word anthology derives from the Greek anthologia, which means "flower-collection" or "bouquet." During the Byzantine era the Greek word became a metaphor for a collection of flowers of verse, that is, of small choice poems; the homonym anthologion was applied to hymnals. Although the Neo-Latin term florilegium is a calque of anthologia, the two are not synonyms. Whereas an anthology tends to be a conglomeration of complete texts, florilegium usually denotes wise sayings or memorable passages extracted from longer works. In the Middle Ages various metaphoric terms related to flares were used to describe such collections of extracts. Modem English uses the word excerpt, which sustains the floral imagery since it derives from a verb meaning "to pluck.""

In days of global economic distress, libraries implementing a GIS service, must ensure that users will be able to make the greatest possible use of its capabilities and functions. Based on the above framework, the goal of this study is to broadly explore the collection development policies of libraries with geographical collections and GIS services worldwide, outlining the main characteristics of the geospatial collection policies and providing some examples of how these characteristics are reflected in available to users, services. The research questions formed in this context are: 1) What are the main features of geospatial collection development policies? 2) Do geospatial collection development policies include features that reflect the adjustment of libraries to the rapid growth of open geospatial data? 3) Do the existence geospatial collection policies reflect the adjustment of libraries to limited financial means the last few years? To achieve this, we relied on a survey we undertook from May to August 2011 and in which we searched websites of academic libraries in Universities which inter alia operate those departments whose curricula are based in the use of geospatial information and GIS. Out of 331 academic libraries investigated worldwide, 136 libraries were detected with GIS services as indicated on their websites. Out of these, only 24 worldwide had on their website information regarding geospatial collection development policies. Thus, we focused our research on policies provided by these 24 libraries on their websites, listed the characteristics mentioned by each of these policies and group them together so to isolate what was common to all and highlight those referred to specific cases. Our survey revealed that many libraries include geospatial data to the same written policies as those of map collections while other university libraries facing geospatial data as a unique collection.Information relating to format, metadata, and originality are some of those that have been included in many libraries’ policies and are related to the specification of the open data that will be incorporated into the local collection. Libraries seem to participate in collaborative schemes to proceed to advantageous agreements. Given the increasing demand for GIS services and collections in libraries, librarians should use every outreach tool available to reach potential audiences, and the collection development policy is one of this.

Libraries, through their catalogues and borrowing records are well-placed to use data analytics to enhance their collection management (and of course do this already, for example by directing orders to genres/ areas that are heavily borrowed). In this article, we explore some of the insights for the management of multilingual collections offered by a novel research method that fuses analysis of a large data set of borrowing records with data from interviews with library staff. Such a method, we argue, helps to untangle the Gordian knot around why materials in some languages are widely popular while materials for other equally widely-spoken languages sit unused on the shelves. It also draws our attention to the ways in which different demographics of speakers are engaging with library materials across the various languages, and gives a suite of tools local libraries might use to better assess the likely demand for materials in languages other than English. 2

Over 75 years the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection has grown from an institution whose definition of Byzantine studies focused specifically on the history and culture of the Byzantine empire to one that encompasses the empire’s wider sphere of influence and interaction with neighboring cultures and faiths. The library pursues difficult-to-acquire materials, and its collections now cover aspects of Syriac Christian, Islamic, and medieval Caucasian studies that are incorporated within research on Byzantine liturgy, theology, and culture. Changes in access policies and collections development have drawn scholars in these and other related fields to the community, deepening understanding and dialogue.
As the field of potential users increases, providing better access to our resources grows in importance. This paper explores these changes and their impact on modern understanding of medieval faiths.

Experts disagree on the parameters to use to identify the "best" serials within a scientific field. The author set out to develop an extension to Dhawan's journal selection model for ranking serials in any scientific field. Comparison of three different instantiations of Dhawan's model were used to rank thirty-four biomedical informatics serials. The first instantiation of Dhawan's model identified seven serials and divided them into two groups. The second instantiation of Dhawan's model identified twelve serials and separated them into two groups. Using fuzzy set theory the new extended model produced a rank ordered list of the top twelve biomedical informatics serials. The objective of this study was to identify trends in academic health sciences libraries (AHSLs) as they adapt to the shift from a print knowledgebase to an increasingly digital knowledgebase. This research was funded by the 2003 David A. Kronick Traveling Fellowship. The author spent a day and a half interviewing professional staff at each library. The questionnaire used was sent to the directors of each library in advance of the visit, and the directors picked the staff to be interviewed and set up the schedule. Seven significant trends were identified. These trends are part of the shift of AHSLs from being facility and print oriented with a primary focus on their role as repositories of a print-based knowledgebase to a new focus on their role as the center or "nexus" for the organization, access, and use of an increasingly digital-based knowledgebase. BACKGROUND The analysis included forty-one academic health sciences library (HSL) Websites as captured in the first two weeks of January 2001. Home pages and persistent navigational tools (PNTs) were analyzed for layout, technology, and links, and other general site metrics were taken. METHODS Websites were selected based on rank in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, with regional and resource libraries given preference on the basis that these libraries are recognized as leaders in their regions and would be the most reasonable source of standards for best practice. A three-page evaluation tool was developed based on previous similar studies. All forty-one sites were evaluated in four specific areas: library general information, Website aids and tools, library services, and electronic resources.
