Masters in Education

"Trainee teachers following the three-year undergraduate BEd course at the University of Wolverhampton undertake a final-year research study. This project requires each individual to investigate an aspect of teaching and learning within an early years or primary school setting.

Reflections on Research presents, in publication, a selection of these final-year projects completed by trainee teachers in 2008 and 2009.

The students themselves have looked back upon the project to critically evaluate the positive and not so positive elements of their investigation. They also considered how what they did as student teachers remains relevant to what they do now as qualified professionals working in the classroom.

The premise of this book is simple: if the chapter writers could go back in time and talk with themselves when they began their studies, what advice would they give? Isn’t hindsight a bonus? Each chapter will offer this hindsight. The chapters will not be their personal stories, but useful lessons learned through their experiences. Those lessons will be offered to aspiring and current graduate students to help ensure that their studies are successful. Chapters contain contributions from a range of academics and academic-practitioners, from those getting established in their careers to those that are more novice and emergent. Its contributors include scholars from many universities throughout the United States. Contributors cover essential aspects of graduate study, such as writing and publishing, relationships with supervisors, utilizing rejection and critique, and becoming a researcher. Contributors write of studying for higher degrees and coping with family, illness, disability, and distance. Culture is bridged between Hispanic scholars and their colleagues in mainstream academia, and international students offer advice to those coming to these shores to study. This volume provides indispensable advice that every graduate student could utilize and follows on from the successful publication of Postgraduate Study in Aotearoa New Zealand: Surviving and Succeeding (McMaster & Murphy, 2014). The US edition will be part of an international ‘survive and succeed’ series currently being produced in Australia, the UK and South Africa.

"Between 2000-2004, a number of practising teachers in the West Midlands were awarded ‘Best Practice Research Scholarships’ from the DfES. The Scholarships allowed them to carry out practice-based research and to report on their findings.

Presented here are some of the reports which resulted. The collection is designed to exemplify some of the issues which the teacher-researchers faced, the approaches they took, and how they presented their findings. It also disseminates to a wider audience the results of their investigations and their recommendations for professional practice in schools.

‘A Beginner’s Guide…’ is a step-by-step guide for students new to research. It covers every stage in turn, starting with learning from other research, choosing a topic, designing research questions, writing a literature review, deciding on methodology, designing research instruments, and consideration of validity and reliability; then moving to carrying out the investigation, analyzing quantitative and qualitative data and finally writing up the project. The ethical issues of doing education research are examined throughout.

Included are case studies to illustrate common problems and solutions; 14 ‘Project Sheets’ (available on this Academia page) which allow students to build up their work in stages and prepare draft text for their final written project; also key points, activities, recommended further reading and a glossary of research terms.

The book is written for undergraduate students doing education courses and Masters-level students new to research. It is relevant to students of all phases of education: early years, primary, secondary and further education, and to a range of international settings.

bireylerin aynı uçak biletini 100 TL’ye satın aldıklarını öğrenmekte ve düşük fiyat ödeme
başarısını kendi kişisel özelliklerine atfetmektedir. Diğer 2.numaralı senaryoda katılımcılar aynı
uçak biletini 100 TL’ye satın almakta, daha sonra diğer bireylerin aynı uçak biletini 50 TL’ye
satın aldıklarını öğrenmekte ve ödedikleri yüksek fiyat sorumluluğunu ve/ veya suçunu
havayolu işletmesine atfetmektedir. Araştırmanın amacı, iki senaryo kapsamında dinamik
fiyatlandırma sonucu meydana gelen fiyat farklılıklarının katılımcılardaki etkilerini belirlemek
ve hangi etkilerin tekrar satın alma niyetini pozitif, hangi etkilerin tekrar satın alma niyetini
negatif etkilediğini ortaya koymaktır. Bireylerin senaryolar çerçevesinde düşük fiyatı (başarı)
ve yüksek fiyatı (sorumluluk ve/ veya suçlama) atfetmeleri, bu atfetme durumlarının havayolu
işletmelerinin güncel ve gelecekteki satış cirolarını etkileyip etkilemediği ve işletmelerin satış
rakamlarını nasıl-neden etkilediği tezin önemli bir boyutunu meydana getirmektedir. Dinamik
fiyatlandırma etkilerinin araştırılmasında nicel, tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel yöntemin ilişkisel tarama
modeli kullanılmıştır. Çok Değişkenli MANCOVA ve Discriminant ile hipotezler test edilmiştir.
Yapılan analizler sonucunda dinamik fiyatlandırma yönteminin (düşük fiyat/ yüksek fiyat)
bağımlı değişkenleri (fiyat bilinci, algılanan fiyat adaleti, prosedüre dayalı fiyat adaleti, atfetme,
tekrar satın alma niyetleri) değiştirdiği ve bu farklılaşmanın atfetme sonucu iki ayrı katılımcı
grubunun tekrar satın alma niyetlerini değiştirdiği % 93,1 güvenle tespit edilmiştir. Bağımlı
değişkenlerin atfetme sonucu değişmesi, aynı uçak biletini düşük fiyata satın alan katılımcıların
fiyatı adil bulmalarını ve tekrar satın alma niyetlerinin pozitif etkilenmesini sağlamıştır.Diğer
yandan aynı uçak biletini yüksek fiyata satın alan katılımcıların fiyatı adil bulmamalarına ve
tekrar satın alma niyetlerinin negatif etkilenmesine yol açmıştır. Tüm bulgular genel olarak
değerlendirildiğinde, insanların aynı uçak biletinin geç tarihte yüksek fiyata satılmasını atfetme
sonucu adaletsizlik olarak gördükleri, havayolu işletmesindeki fiyat haksızlığının tekrar
edeceğine inandıkları, bu fiyat haksızlığının devamlı olacağı inancının ise havayolu
işletmelerinin kazançlarını şimdi ve gelecekte negatif etkileyebileceği varsayılmaktadır.

Two groups of participants have been compared according to two scenarios within this
thesis study. In the 1st scenario, participants purchased the flight ticket for 50 TL and then they
came to learn that the other individuals have purchased the same ticket for 100 TL and have
attributed the achievement of paying a lower price to their personal characteristics. In the 2nd
scenario, the participants purchased the same flight ticket for 100 TL then they came to learn
that the other individuals have purchased the very flight ticket for 50 TL and have attributed the
high price responsibility and/or blame for the high rate they paid to the airlines. The objective
of this study is to determine the effects of price differences resulting from dynamic pricing in
the two scenarios on the participants and to identify which impacts on the purchase intention
were positive, and which effects had negative impacts on the purchase intention. Within the
framework of these two scenarios, the fact that individuals attributed low rate (success) and
high rate (responsibility and/or blame) whether these attribution statuses affect the current
and future sales turnover of airline companies and how and why they would affect the sales
figures compromise significant dimension of the thesis. The relational scanning model of the
quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional methods has been adopted to investigate the
dynamic pricing impacts. Hypotheses were tested with the Multivariate MANCOVA and
Discriminant. In result of the conducted analyzes, it has been found that dynamic pricing
method (low rate /high rate) changed dependent variables (price awareness, perceived price
justice, procedure-based price justice, attribution, repurchase intentions) and it has been
detected that this differentiation has changed purchasing intentions of two different groups of
participants at 93,1% of reliability. The change of the dependent variables in result of the
attribution has ensured that participants who purchased the same flight tickets at a low rate
considered the rate as fair and has affected their intention of repurchasing positively.On the
other hand, participants who purchased the same flight tickets at a higher rate caused them
consider the price as unfair and their purchase intentions were negatively affected. If we
generally assess all the findings, an assumption strikes that people consider the sales of the
same flight ticket is sold at a high rate at a late date as an unfair action and believe that the
inequality of the rates in the airline business will take place again, and that the unfairness of
such rates will be practiced permanently and they further believe that this could negatively
affect the airlines operations’ earnings now and in the future.

Abingdon: Routledge. ‘Grounded theory’ is a well-used research design which allows researchers to develop organized, persuasive theory from wide-ranging practical investigation. In this chapter, key principles and issues relating to the approach are critically discussed.

When researching, make sure you examine a range of literature, including that which puts forward unconventional, uncomfortable or controversial ideas.  This will strengthen the criticality of your academic writing and help you produce a ‘whole picture’ of both your topic and your approach to investigation.  Here are some examples…

This paper reports on a section of the initial findings (July, 2008) of a pilot research investigation into the provision of Masters level PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) in England and discusses the questions raised by the research. The decision to offer Masters level credits within the PGCE marks a significant step for the teaching profession and the findings of the research are relevant to the following groups: teacher educators involved in presenting Masters level PGCE courses to student teachers; student teachers embarking on Masters level PGCE courses; teachers and headteachers in schools; government policy makers and all agencies concerned with teacher training.

Project structure and word counts.
The following table offers a suggested structure and approximate word counts for dissertations, relative to the degree being pursued. This is designed to be altered according to the needs of the researcher, and the stipulations of their supervisor and institution. It is important to understand that the table is offered here only as a set of non-specific suggestions for your (hopefully!) very specific project. All dissertations are different, and your supervisor is the best person to talk to about your specific institutional, school, or college requirements, which may vary quite significantly. Creating your own outline through discussion with your supervisor gives you both a sense of where you are in the process and what needs to be done, whilst also functioning as a reference point when completing smaller intermediary targets. The examples below illustrate a general principle of successful research espoused by this book: a larger project becomes much more manageable when broken down into smaller, clearly defined sections. This approach is likely to prove helpful even beyond PhD level, when writing papers for publication in academic journals, for instance, or even when completing the second edition of a textbook!

Statistics on enrolment of international students in higher education, and studies on limitations of their adaptation to other (usually Western) cultural and learning norms dominate literature. There is much less emphasis on a specific aspect of the student experience. This study examined Chinese postgraduate students' perspectives on how they develop critical thinking during a one year postgraduate programme in Education. Semi-structured interviews conducted with six Chinese students illuminate key occurrences over the study period which impacted their learning. Findings suggest that participants needed to adjust to the concept of critical thinking and the expected level of critical thinking on their programme. A key factor identified in the study suggests that a trigger event: coursework feedback, affected how the participants develop critical thinking. The study concludes with suggestions for timely pedagogical support to enhance the learning experiences of Chinese students who encounter unfamiliar academic requirements during their study abroad.
