Papal Coins

Piasters were among the most beautiful coins in the history of papal Numismatics; the most important engravers expressed their technical ability and their art on them. They were first minted in 1588 by Sixtus V, but probably the ducats struck under the pontificate of Clement VII during the sack of Rome can be considered piasters as well. The introduction of the maximum module coin in Rome has to be inserted in a wider European framework and explained in the light of a renewed wealth, the most immediate consequence of the discovery of new silver mines and of America. The quantity of silver entered into circulation influenced the monetary production of all European states.

The authors describe 8 coins from the surroundings of Barlad town, Vaslui county. First is a Roman
Provincial Coin, „Provincia Dacia” type, issued by Philip the Arab, 5 of them are Polish silver triple
groschen, 2 of Stephen Bathory, 3 from Zygmund III Wasa, 1 triple groschen issued bz Tanssylvania from
Zygmund Bathory, and last one, a Papal coin from the time of Pope Benedict XIV.
