Chronic vascular access is often needed in experimental animal studies, and vascular access ports (VAP) have been proposed as an alternative to conventional venipuncture. We previously reported on VAP implantation by using femoral venous cutdown (FVC) and tunneling. In an attempt to decrease the moderate complications associated with the FVC method, we developed the single-incision, peripheral-insertion (SIPI) method. In a retrospective evaluation, 92 FVC procedures were compared with 113 SIPI procedures in cynomolgus and rhesus macaques and baboons with as much as 2.5 y of follow-up. The rate of complications was significantly lower for the SIPI method than for the FVC method (19.4% versus 33.7%), particularly in regard to infectious complications (8.0% versus 27.3%, respectively). The mild inflammatory response against stented bioprosthetic heart valves in the sheep model is often opposed by a more distinct response in failing human implants. With the emergence of stentless root prostheses with their significantly larger proportion of tissue interacting with the immune system of the host, a more relevant animal model than the sheep may be needed. Valved, porcine aortic roots of 5 cm length were fixed in 0.2% glutaraldehyde and implanted in the upper descending aorta of Merino sheep (n = 5; 43+/-3 kg) and Chacma baboons (n = 5; 17+/-3 kg). After 6 weeks of tissue calcification, pannus outgrowth and inflammation were assessed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, histologic damage scoring (0 to 3), image analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. The main difference between the two animal models was in aortic wall calcification (64.8+/-39.8 microg/mg in the sheep model versus 4.1+/-5.9 microg/mg in the primate model; p > 0.005). In both models, leaflet calcification was negligible (2.6+/-2.4 microg/mg in the sheep versus 2.5+/-1.9 microg/mg in the primate), and the overall extent of inflammation was comparable (1.2+/-0.8 versus 0.98+/-0.7; p = 0.18 in the sheep and the primate, respectively). Qualitatively, the sheep demonstrated a macrophage-dominated reaction whereas the inflammatory demarcation often resembled a granulocyte-dominated xenograft response in the primate. Pannus outgrowth was comparable in length (8.4+/-2.3 mm versus 9.1+/-4.3 mm proximally and 7.1+/-3.4 mm versus 7.4+/-5.1 mm distally, in the sheep and baboon, respectively; p > 0.05). Our results confirm the sheep as a significantly stronger calcification model for stentless aortic heart valves than the primate. Remaining antigenicity of porcine tissue as a result of incomplete cross-linking, however, elicits a distinctly stronger xenograft-type reaction in the primate model.

Torque failure for endosseous implants has been used as a biomechanical measure of anchorage, though the significance of such data is not known. A practical understanding of the resistance to torque failure of implant-tissue interfaces at stage 2 surgery would help in assigning torque levels for implant abutment-screw fastening. The purpose of this study was to measure torque failure levels of commercially pure (CP) titanium, Ti-6Al-4V, hydroxyapatite-coated (HA-coated) screw-shaped implants placed into the maxillae and mandibles of baboons. Implants identical in size were placed into the edentulous posterior maxillae and mandibles of six female baboons (n = 37 each group) using a standardized surgical protocol. One of the more perplexing problems in primate systematics concerns the phyletic relationships of the large African monkeys--Mandrillus (including drills), Papio, Lophocebus and Cercocebus. For over twenty years, there has been molecular evidence that mangabeys are an unnatural group and that the terrestrial forms--Cercocebus--are the sister taxon of Mandrillus, while the arboreal forms--Lophocebus--are more closely allied with Papio. Nevertheless, most systematists have been reluctant to accept this scheme due to the lack of morphological evidence. In this paper, we undertake a detailed analysis of the scapula, humerus, radius, ulna, pelvis, femur and dentition of papionin primates. We identify a host of features shared by Cercocebus and Mandrillus to the exclusion of Lophocebus and Papio. The polarity of characters is established by examining an outgroup comprised of several species of Macaca. The features shared by Cercocebus and Mandrillus are functionally related to specific feeding and locomotor behaviors that include aggressive manual foraging, the processing of hard-object foods and the climbing of vertical trunks. We hypothesize that the ability to subsist on hard seeds and nuts gleaned from the forest floor is a key adaptation for the Cercocebus-Mandrillus clade.

Conclusions: Overall ECT was a more potent treatment for patients with MDD, this being particularly evident in patients with MDD and psychosis; however, in patients with MDD without psychosis the effects of rTMS were similar to those of ECT. Candidate human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vaccine regimens based on DNA boosted with recombinant modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) have been in development for some time, and there is evidence for improved immunogenicity of newly developed constructs. This study describes immune responses to candidate DNA and MVA vaccines expressing multiple genes (gag, RT, tat, nef and env) from HIV-1 subtype C in chacma baboons (Papio ursinus). The topographic distribution pattern and morphological features of Lafora-like bodies in the spinal cord of the dog, cat, fox, and baboon were examined by light and electron microscopy. The caudal lumbar and the coccygeal parts of the spinal cords were the predilection sites for the bodies in all animals and were very prominent in the ventral columns and intermediate substance. The bodies mainly composed of branching filaments were preferentially located in neuronal processes and rarely in astrocytes. The histochemical characteristics of the bodies were identical in all animals and consisted mainly of polyglucosan.
