Tarascan State

El presente trabajo es en gran medida una síntesis de mi investigación para obtener el grado de Licenciado en Historia, hace ya más de tres años. En algunos puntos la información ha sido revisada y actualizada.  En especial, sobre la presencia de toponimia de posible origen michoacano en el estado de Jalisco. Así pues, este trabajo se basa en cuatro líneas de evidencia: la etnohistórica, la toponímica y en menor medida, la antropológica y arqueológica.
Este trabajo se divide pues en dos partes: la primera que aborda los límites, características, organización y sentido ritual-cosmogónico de la frontera occidental tarasca. En la segunda parte se analiza la pervivencia de toponimias en la zona, como posible rastro de la influencia o presencia de los tarascos precolombinos en la zona occidental.

Durante mucho tiempo el Estado tarasco ha sido presentado como un ente aislado en Mesoamérica. La presente obra investiga los contactos exteriores del Irechecua Tzintzuntzani y muestra que no sólo en el ámbito cultural, sino también en el político y económico, participó en el multicéntrico sistema mundo mesoamericano del Posclásico. Aparte del análisis de los contactos con grupos y regiones dentro de Mesoamérica, se incluye el estudio de las relaciones con Aridoamérica y se evalúa la posibilidad de contactos con Centroamérica y Suramérica. Se explora además la fragmentación sociocultural y lingüística del Estado y se discute de manera crítica si los diferentes grupos que habitaban el Michoacán prehispánico realmente pueden ser denominados como grupos étnicos o si otros tipos de pertenencia fueron más relevantes. Para este análisis, se elige un enfoque interdisciplinario y se utilizan datos y métodos de la historia y la arqueología, además de la lingüística y, en menor medida, de la geografía. El trabajo se basa en una investigación extensa de la bibliografía, registros históricos e informes de excavación. Es el primer análisis completo y detallado de los contactos exteriores del Estado tarasco. Por medio de la recopilación, análisis y evaluación de gran número de fuentes que a menudo son de difícil acceso y que no han sido publicados, no sólo se ha aumentado y reevaluado el conocimiento de este aspecto particular del Estado tarasco sino además en otros aspectos más generales

This publication presents the results of the archaeological studies relative to the residential and civic-ceremonial structures realized between 1983 and 1996 within the framework of the Projects Michoacán and III led by the researchers of the Centre of Mexican and Centro American studies (CEMCA).
The Michoacán project (1983-1987) «had for purpose the realization of a study of all the perceptible demonstrations of the prehispanic occupations in the region» (Michelet and alii, on 1992: 17-18).
After the first three field’s seasons of the year 1983, dedicated essentially to survey and to test pits, we directed all our efforts to the resolution of more specific objectives, the main thing being the study of the settlement patterns of the very numerous postclassical sites of the south region of the Project, located in the tarascan Sierra and Malpaís of Zacapu.
The excavations directly connected to this subject were made in 1984 and 1985, but various tests and surveys realized between 1983 and 1986 brought data very useful for our study.
The author has presented a doctoral thesis sustained in January, 1991, in Paris I, on “The sites and residential and civic-ceremonial structures of the region of Zacapu, during the Postclassic ». This thesis has constituted the first synthesis in French on this subject.
As a consequence of the criticisms emitted during the defense of this thesis, and insufficient data concerning the early postclassic occupation of the region of Zacapu, was set up the Michoacán III (1993-1996) project. Both main purposes of this Project were the study of the transition between the Palacio phase (900-1200) and the Milpillas phase (1200-1450) as well as the systematic recording of sites and various structures of these sites localized in Malpaís of Zacapu and dated from the phase Milpillas.
This publication will present mainly the results of the excavations of the places of residence of
the group B of the site of Milpillas, excavations of ethnographical type allowing inferences on
the activities of the ancient inhabitants of places.
The settlement patterns of the region of Zacapu and particularly the fast development in the malpaís of Zacapu of sites spread at the beginning of Postclassic recent will be the object of another publication, entitled « El Malpaís de Zacapu y sus alrededores en el Posclásico » (Malpaís of Zacapu and its surroundings in the Postclassic «), in the BAR series.
Both publications are complementary, this first one presents the vision intra-site, by district and place of residence, the second is a regional approach of the settlement patterns of this region of the protohistoric tarascan empire.

Resumen La tradición cultural purépecha duró por lo menos 3000 años durante los cuales se produjeron importantes transformaciones sociales, políticas y económicas que culminaron en el poderoso y centralizado reino que encontraron los españoles cuando llegaron a la capital de Tzintzuntzan en 1522. A diferencia de otros estudios que han examinado por qué, cuándo y dónde ocurrieron estos cambios, el presente capítulo explica cómo tuvieron lugar, poniendo atención en dos procesos significativos de la conducta humana, la jerarquía y la heterarquía. Los estudios arqueológicos e históricos, y especialmente sus modelos de patrones de asentamiento, sistemas tributarios, mercados y estructuras de clase social, han documentado el ritmo, la distribución espacial y la naturaleza de la jerarquía en la evolución de las sociedades del centro y norte de Michoacán. Sin embargo, lo que no explican es cómo y por qué los límites étnicos se mantuvieron a través del tiempo y del espacio. En el caso de la tradición purépecha, una pregunta importante es cómo éstos mantuvieron el idioma y su identidad étnica durante milenios a pesar de haber estado rodeados por grandes poblaciones de hablantes del náhuatl y haber experimentado además migraciones de grupos de otras identidades étnicas que vinieron del norte y del este. A partir de las publicaciones etnográficas e históricas, documentaremos el papel de las relaciones heterárquicas entre individuos y comunidades en el mantenimiento de la inclusión e interacciones étnicas, las cuales constituyen un proceso importante que incluso dejó huellas detectables en el registro arqueológico. A En este capítulo la palabra purépecha se refiere a la tradición cultural y lingüística del pasado y del presente de la gente conocida comopurépecha o tarasca. El uso de la palabra " tarasco/a " se limitará al Estado político del Posclásico Tardío (ver también capítulo 3).

Los bienes estratégicos son los recursos más básicos e imponderables disponibles para las entidades socioculturales (Weigand 1982; Williams y Weigand 1994). En Mesoamérica prehispánica existían muchos tipos de recursos o bienes estratégicos: los básicos o importantes eran aquellos elementos necesarios para la explotación primaria del medio ambiente, como la obsidiana, la cerámica utilitaria y el cobre. Los bienes de lujo, por otra parte, eran los artículos culturalmente identificados como marcadores de estatus: jade, turquesa, oro, plata, plumas, cerámica suntuaria, etc. En Mesoamérica prehispánica los recursos estratégicos incluían, entre muchos otros: obsidiana, sal, metales (oro, plata, cobre y estaño, etcétera), cerámica, pedernal, caolín, agua y tierra fértil.

Los asentamientos del Posclásico Medio (1250 - 1450 d.C. ) ubicados sobre el Malpaís de Zacapu, en la región Centro-norte de Michoacán, revelan el profundo cambio de organización espacial de las sociedades locales en vísperas de la emergencia del Estado tarasco. Poblaciones locales e inmigrantes se nuclearon y formaron cuatro aglomeraciones muy extensas, cuyo paisaje urbanizado era, hasta ahora, inédito en el occidente de México. El presente estudio expone recientes análisis espaciales realizados sobre uno de estos cuatro sitios: Malpaís Prieto. Nuestro nuevo acercamiento permite reconsiderar la cuestión de la urbanización en la historia sociopolítica y la emergencia del Estado Tarasco.

In the last centuries before the Spanish conquest, the Northern and Central Mexican highlands experienced a major political, economic, demographical, and social transformation. At that time, state entities emerged, including the Aztec empire and its neighbor, the Tarascan kingdom. We here attempt to explore the modalities and representations of the foundation of the Tarascan kingdom through one critical aspect: the urban transition that occurred in the Zacapu region during the 13th century. As a consequence of strong demographic growth, three important agglomerations were founded, and an earlier settlement was greatly extended and transformed. After a short review of the Tarascan foundation myth, we compare two archaeological cases: the “founded” city of Malpaís Prieto (1250-1450 ad) and the “re-founded” city of El Palacio (850-1450 AD).

The pre-Tarascan urban complex of the Malpaís of Zacapu (1250-1500 A. D.), located in the actual state of Michoacán, Mexico, presents numerous civic-ceremonial areas, formed by diagnostic structures like pyramidal-bases, places, altars and several important residential-type buildings named “great houses”. These public areas and their components are, as religious and political supports of power, a fundamental element of space and social structure. They have to be meticulously examined in order to understand the social and political context of the early formative Tarascan state.
But in spite of the components’ similarity, the organization of these areas doesn’t seem to follow a clear and systematic model. This study will attempt to determine some of the implantation tendencies of these centers, by exploring and comparing different examples, particularly those from the archaeological settlements of the Malpaís Prieto. Such tendencies, if they exist, will give us the first keys to understanding the structural part of the public areas in the setting of a social and political urban space.

Pottery is one of the most important inventions of humankind. It is thousands of years old, and it is fair to say that without pottery the development of civilization as we know it would have been impossible. Food preparation and storage, religion and ritual, wine making, trade, art, and architecture, among many other human achievements, were all aided by pottery, an artificial material that lent itself to making all kinds of objects, including vessels, figurines, roof tiles, water pipes, fishnet weights, inscribed tablets with the earliest forms of writing, and many other things, in an endless example of human creativity. In recent years high-tech ceramics are used in myriad applications, all of them indispensable for communication, computers, medicine, art, and many more uses than we could list here.
This book is about a contemporary Mesoamerican pottery tradition, but it also looks back at the earliest examples of cultural development in this area. By means of ethnographic analogy, this study tries to shed light on a modern indigenous community and on ethnoarchaeological theory, method and practice, undoubtedly one of the most important aspects of archaeological research in Mexico today.
