In occasione dell’Anno Europeo del Patrimonio Culturale 2018 il Dipartimento di Beni Culturali dell’Università di Bologna ha promosso e organizzato un convegno internazionale, tenutosi a Ravenna nei giorni 21-23 novembre 2018, attraverso il quale, sotto l’umbrella subject del Grand Tour, indagare gli aspetti storici ed attuali relativi al valore
culturale e turistico delle diverse tipologie di beni rientranti nel largo concetto di ‘patrimonio culturale’. Il consesso, strutturato in cinque specifiche sessioni cui hanno partecipato studiosi italiani, francesi, spagnoli ed ungheresi, ha voluto anche dare avvio ad un percorso di valorizzazione delle diverse, ma integrate, competenze e attitudini di
ricerca presenti nel Dipartimento, evidenziando così la multidisciplinarietà che lo caratterizza e la trasversalità di talune indagini e riflessioni scientifiche. Con la pubblicazione degli atti del convegno ravennate non solo si è voluto approfondire storicamente i concetti di patrimonio culturale, viaggio, e turismo, distinti, o collegati nell'ambito del fenomeno del Grand Tour, ma si è inteso esprimere soprattutto la valenza del concetto di condivisione sociale e culturale, che ha permesso fenomeni di vasta portata e di grande incidenza nella storia pubblica come appunto questo del Grand Tour. La condivisione ha implicato nel tempo un percorso complesso di conoscenza dell’altro da sé e sia che si tratti di individui, che delle loro reti sociali, che ancora delle loro sovrastrutture culturali. The act of traveling has always had a hold on the human imagination, and consequently, travel writing has been a popular and influential literary genre through the centuries. Its intellectual influence upon science and culture is sometimes forgotten, for it was mostly to travelogues that people learned about far away cultures and began to discuss about human difference.
The following paper tries to discern the role travel literature has had in the development of ethnography since the discovery of America in 1492 and its impact in European (and Western) ideas about the Other; particularly the modern concept of race as it appeared in the 19th century.

The publication of my transcription of Paul Kane's field notes in 1989 shed a very different light on Kane as both a traveller and, perhaps more glaringly, an author. Not permitted schooling by his father because he wanted to be a painter, Kane was hamstrung by only phonetic spelling. Nevertheless, his persona in his own writing is much more colourful and less typical than is the first-person persona in "his" book, *Wanderings of an Artist among the Indians of North America* (1859), in which Kane is bumped up to a refined gentleman. Moreover, the field notes show us how Kane recorded his encounters with native people from day to day, not in retrospect.

In this volume, Elisabeth Fraser shows that artists and the works they created in the Mediterranean during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries were informed by mutual dependence and reciprocity between European nations and the Ottoman Empire. Her rich exploration of this vibrant cross-cultural exchange challenges the dominant interpretation of European relations with the East during the period, revealing a shared world of fluid and long-sustained interactions.

Voyagers to and from the Ottoman Empire documented their journeys in prints, paintings, and lavishly illustrated travelogues; many of these helped define Europe’s self-identified role as heir to Ottoman civilizations and bolstered its presence in the Islamic Mediterranean and beyond. Fraser finds that these works illuminate not only how travelers’ experiences abroad were more nuanced than the expansionist ideology with which they became associated, but also how these narratives depicted the vitality of Ottoman culture and served as extensions of Ottoman diplomacy. Ottomans were aware of and responded to European representations, using them to defend Ottoman culture and sovereignty. In embracing the art of both cultures and setting these works in a broader context, Fraser challenges the dominant historiographical tradition that sees Ottoman artists adopting European modes of art in a one-sided process of “Europeanization.”

Theoretically informed and rigorously researched, this cross-cultural approach to European and Ottoman art sheds much-needed critical light on the widely disseminated travel images of the era—important cultural artifacts in their own right—and provides a fresh and inviting understanding of the relationships among cultures in the Mediterranean during an era of increasing European expansionism.

American painters’ travel and/or stay in Morocco during the pre-colonial era resulted in a considerably large compendium of American paintings of the Moroccan landscape with its people, animals, architecture and natural scenes. The tableaus eternize historical, social and cultural moments, and tell aquatic stories of what many an American genius does when they catch or are caught under the effect of the Moroccan colors. The corpus acquires a further importance thanks to the multiplicity of perspectives and points of view of the different painters. The aim of the present paper is to shed some light on the works of the travelling American painters who visited Morocco, especially during the pre-colonial period of Moroccan history. The intention is not to ‘revisit’ such paintings with a counter-discourse but to appreciate them from an Other’s point of view. It is mostly an analysis of some of these paintings from a Moroccan perspective. Due to the diversity of schools and the difference in the quality of the artistic works, we find no way to escape the sampling strategy, hence the focus on a selection of painters deemed to be more representative of American travelling painters.

Powerful historical artefacts vitalize their potential agencies in specific historical moments and cause fractures in our perspectives. In this thesis, I argue that objects' power can be examined by looking at their supernatural, political, cultural, practical, and economic agencies. The thesis is based on a case study of looting in Turkey and archival research on nineteenth-century travelogues of Asia Minor. Rituals of looting attest to the supernatural agency. Rituals challenge the common perception of time and space. The contradictions between European travelers' approach to and the Ottoman locals' interpretations of historical artefacts signify objects' cultural agency. Locals' multitemporal framing of antiquities and travelers' perception of time as linear has resulted in an epistemic antinomy that defined the Ottoman experience of modernity from below. Such encounters in the Mediterranean conjuncture often necessitated the Ottoman state to fill in the power gap. I argue that this involvement sutured the antiquities' political agency in designing the Ottoman's modern statecraft and perception of cultural heritage. Besides these three agencies, antiquities have a practical agency that locals attached to their everyday lives. The economic agency of antiquities is relevant in the global market of the illicit antiquities trade. In the sphere of the antiquities market, the exchange value subsumes the antiquities' other agencies. Through in-depth case studies from Laodicea in Turkey to Heraklion in Crete, the thesis demonstrates how artefacts' times have undergone singularization. As their historical and social context unfolded, the shared sense of space within eclectic temporality has come to a halt. I contend that attempts to singularize the past narrow the culturally effective possibilities of conviviality between diverse social groups. The thesis argues that archaeologists, heritage scholars, and policymakers can contribute to the culturally viable and socially equitable ways to organize cultural heritage, should a holistic analysis, involving all the five types of agencies, be applied to the cases of looting of antiquities.

The most unusual part of Byron’s European travels in 1809–10 was probably his visit to Albania, where he roughed it for a bit and then lived and travelled luxuriously as the guest of Ali Pasha. He wrote about his Albanian travels in his letters and more famously in Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, whose few stanzas on Albania along with their elaborate footnotes have had an extraordinary fall-out. Historians, travellers and at least one army
officer have used Byron’s letters, poems and footnotes to understand the land and its people. Though Byron made Albania seem Romantic, remote, wild and exciting, few followed him into Albania. Those who did, however, tended to write about it with a verve reminiscent of Byron. This essay is about three Byron-inflected British travellers of the earlier twentieth century, Peter Quennell (1905–93), who visited Albania in the 1920s, Patrick Leigh Fermor (1915–), who walked through the Balkans in the 1930s, and the mountaineer Harold W. Tilman (1898–1977), who volunteered for duty in Albania during World War II because it was reputed to be a mountainous country.

In this chapter, I examine the making of Padma bkod in European academic and popular cultures.

Following on Pandit Kinthup’s heels, and prior to Capt. Bailey, the French explorer and Tibetologist-to-be Jacques Bacot gave an account of his quest for this hidden-land in his travel narrative Le Tibet révolté. By the time Bacot’s travelogue was published in 1912, French readers had already had access in periodicals and newspapers to a guide-book to Pemakö of its own kind.

Based on this understudied material, I would like to argue that the multi-polar and geographically shifting uses of the toponym “Pemakö” at stake here highlight the process of the (re)discovery of this hidden-land in the specific context of the dawn of twentieth century and provide crucial insights into the “transformations of Beyül through time.”

Travel is an experience of cultural encounters; the account that witnesses and represents that experience is not only a literary text but also a cultural document, involving issues of power, knowledge, and identity. In sixteenth-century England the popularity of travel accounts, which documented colonial aspirations, quixotic voyages, and mercantile ventures, manifests that the book as an integral part of the voyage has the power to inform and instruct. Narratives by authors such as Sir Walter Ralegh, Robert Dallington, Fynes Moryson, and Thomas Dallam, depended on the pun between travel ( journeying) and travail (toil, pain), presenting the adventures and adversities of travelers together with information on geographical areas with their human societies and cultures, linked to questions of nationality, race, and gender.  The written record of the great number of early travels, represented in Richard Hakluyt's and later in Samuel Purchas's collections, attests to the rise of England's colonial and commercial power, as well as to the significance of travel writing in English literary history. Despite the contemporary debate over the purpose of going abroad and representing foreign countries, travel, like translation – a word semantically related to it – functioned as a cross-cultural process challenging the boundaries of both geographical and ideological insularity.

The article discusses Frances Trollope’s Domestic Manners of the Americans, a famous account of the writer’s travel in the United States undertaken in the 1820s, and focuses on the language it employs to describe the young republic. It compares Trollope’s discursive strategies to those present in Christopher Columbus’s Diario, and referred to by Stephen Greenblatt in his Marvelous Possessions as the “discourse of wonder.” While the early modern accounts of the New World, including Columbus’s, give voice to the travelers’ amazement and enchantment, Trollope in many respects expresses a contrary sentiment, creating a vision of America as an unpleasantly uncivilized country, with people lacking in sophistication and nature being dangerous and chaotic. She achieves a similar degree of narrative intensity, employing tropes akin to those found in Columbus’s Diario, but with the opposite intention in mind: making use of superlatives, familiarizing the unfamiliar, and hinting at the unbelievable, she creates an inverted version of the discourse of wonder. This strategy is visible particularly well in her descriptions of the Mississippi river, metonymically representing the whole of the United States.

Pourtant, le guide comme la liste offrent diverses perspectives. Après avoir évoqué le cas des guides-catalogues qui s’inscrivent dans une logique d’affirmation de la nation, cet article s’intéresse aux choix faits par les différents auteurs de guides. Le processus de sélection et de hiérarchisation des choses à voir n’est pas anodin et la liste participe à la création d’un espace et d’une identité figés, et aussi à la construction d’une image stéréotypée de la ville. Cet article s’interroge sur l’origine de cet inventaire de « choses à voir », tout en montrant que des publications se détachent de cette liste répétée à l’envi, en en rejetant la forme ou en la rendant plus originale.

Excerpt:  Olga Tufnell (1905‒1985) was a British archaeologist who mainly worked in Palestine in the 1920s and 1930s, whose archive of letters and photographs are housed at the Palestine Exploration Fund, London. She is best known for her scholarly publications on the excavations of Tell ed-Duweir (ancient Lachish), as well scarabs and stamp seals from the East Mediterranean. Tufnell’s reminiscences and letters provide insights into dig life during the so-called “golden age” of archaeology in the Holy Land, and the wider cultural, political, and gendered context of fieldwork within Mandate Palestine.

In our new open access book entitled Olga Tufnell’s “Perfect Journey.” Letters and Photographs of an Archaeologist in the Levant and Mediterranean (UCL Press), we present her letters from this period for the first time. They provide a personal account of her experiences, shedding light on travel and dig life during extraordinary times.

The letters offer insights into social and professional networks and the history of archaeology. They provide a contemporary view of the role of foreign archaeologists, relationships with local workers and their families, and the colonial frameworks within which they operated. The letters are important because they give Olga Tufnell’s viewpoint as an individual at times and places which saw significant social and political change. The letters reflect the attitudes of the day: some static and resistant to change; others indicating the growing acceptance of women in a man’s world.

Why would one send a postcard showing a department store or ahousing estate? Did the people writing such postcards pay anyattention to the image at all? Moreover, why did they sendpostcards from industrial cities in the first place? Using a sampleof 64 postcards sent from four industrial cities, this paperanalyses the messages sent via postcards in the decade followingWWII. The overarching argument is that the postcards had ahighly utilitarian function, different from cards sent as greetingsduring holidays, but at the same time linked to travelexperiences. This use of postcards meant that the creators of thepostcards had relative freedom in shaping the iconography ofindustrial cities across the continent.

Buddhism has provided solace to several people in a world of chaos and human isolation. Charting new trajectories of Buddhist travels provide new experiences of Buddha’s footprints for seeking spirituality and internal peace. The suggested traveling trail traces the footsteps of the Buddha that endeavors to capture a glimpse of the historical reality in Bodh Gaya and Sarnath. The article seeks to unravel the role of Buddhism in the creation of an Asian identity and elements of trade, oral historicity, and illustration of Buddhism in the creation of National identity.

This case study discusses a reflective writing assignment within a Travel Writing and Journalism (TWJ) module delivered at the University of Leeds in Yorkshire, England from 2015-2017. When the course tutor was commissioned to develop and lead the module they were given a summary course outline that included pre-set assessment items approved by a planning committee. The Reflective Writing assignment was included in that preliminary course overview, which the tutor developed to suit. TWJ was an optional, 2 nd year module available as part of the University of Leeds' Discovery programme, which meant that arts and social science students from across the University could enrol in the module, regardless of their major degree programme. Course participants were generally well-educated, motivated, curious about the world and passionate about travel. Nevertheless, each semester a significant number of those enrolled started the course with limited knowledge of the intricacies of transcultural media politics and only a sketchy appreciation of the genre. The reflective writing assignment developed in response to that situation. In order to satisfy the assessment criteria, participants needed to reflect upon the ways that they had developed their practice by engaging with the early course materials. The challenge to first engage with the course materials, in order to reflect upon that process was deliberate. To help prepare the student writers for the final assignment, a major creative non-fiction article (or equivalent) due at the end of the module the first, formative assignment challenged them to develop the stylistic, cultural and theoretical underpinning of that project by reflecting upon the thematic context of the work. That context was informed by a range of different activities, such as the ways that students were able to analyse and adapt course readings for their own creative purposes and their response to in class screenings and discussions. The reflective writing assignment was not always popular with students. For many, this was the first time that they had been asked to reflect upon their own creative engagement with course materials. Some students complained that the challenge to do so was stressful and confusing. Nevertheless, the assignment also became a prompt for reflective insight and transformation.

This article addresses Rachel’s Tomb as a site of heightened ritual activity and pilgrimage, whose popularity increased during the latter years of the British Mandate in Palestine, and whose role and meaning as a symbolic public site have been transformed. We examine how a set of meanings has been established at the site at the particular historic moment, converging local and national meanings, on the one hand, with religious, heritage and touristic meanings, on the other. Our approach is integrative, and we situate our inquiry by addressing three main conceptual points: the first is the site’s geo-physical characteristics, by which we refer to its functionality in terms of location, accessibility, and mobility, as well as in terms of the site’s size and material characteristics. The second point concerns the agentive interventions of the site’s renowned shamash, Shlomo Eliyahu Freimann, and the crucial role that he played in transforming the site’s collective function and public status. The third point concerns a corpus of documents, most of which were written in situ, that center around the site’s impressive visitor books, filled with numerous notations. Study of these documents suggests a hybrid genre that is part of the site’s changing discursive ecology.

This research aims to elaborate the journey of Australian Indigenous in Tara June Winch's novel entitled Swallow the Air. This novel is about journey of half-Aboriginal girl through Australia in search of self-realisation and sense of belonging. She encounters the condition of modern Australia which is different from her expectation about traditional land. The encounters result negotiations between herself and Other. Using Carl Thompson's concept of travel writing, this research analyze the pattern of reportation of the world, revelation of self, and represetation of other, also elaborate agenda of Swallow the Air as a travelogue. The analysis uses are close reading and comparative as a research method. This research shows that modern Indigenous' identity and cultural crisis affected the pattern of travelogue. The pattern of reportation of the world and representation of other indicate subject position, between Europe and Aborigin. She portrays both sides as other, also deliver her comment on each group. As a postcolonial travel writing, this novel depicts power relation in contemporary Australia, to deliver ethical challenge to the government about Indigenous reconciliation. Carrying the spirit of cosmopolitan vision, this novel offers negotiation between traditional and modern values. It also conveys the strategy of liberation by directing toward wider identity, national or even global identity. As Indigenous travel writing, mobility in this novel accommodates the creation of wider and further attempt of resistence, by using network among communities or 'homes' as inter-sites of resistance placed under the umbrella of Australian nation. Nevertheless, that resistance attempt is nof fully flawless since it also contains risk of falling to the force of globalisation.

This paper analyzes and compares both postcolonial and postmodern travel writing about the Asian subcontinent countries of India and Sri Lanka. The postmodern travel memoirs Running with the Family (Michael Ondaatje) and Mumbai New York Scranton: A Memoir (Tamara Shopsin) are analyzed using three critical travel writing elements: food, photography, and cartography. These elements are often neglected in scholarly research. The research here will show how these critical elements support postmodern travel and memoir writing while challenging Orientalism.

Gunung Gede Panggrango atau yang dikenal juga dengan nama "Taman Nasional Gede Pangrango" merupakan destinasi wisata populer yang berada di kawasan Bogor, Jawa Barat. Tak heran jika waktu libur telah tiba maka kawasan taman nasional ini agar diserbu oleh para wisatawan. Umumnya para wisatawan tersebut datang dari berbagai daerah, tak terkecuali Jakarta. Selain hal tersebut, gunung gede memang terkenal pula dengan berbagai cerita mistis yang sangat kental. Beberapa cerita mistis tersebut diantaranya ialah adakalanya para pendaki yang telah sampai di Alun Alun Suryakecana sering mendengar suara dari tapak kuda yang sedang berlari. Konon masyarakat percaya jika kita mendengar suara tersebut, bahwa itulah saat Pengeran Suryakenca datang kembali ke alun-alun dan dikawah oleh para penjaga berkuda. Abstract. ‘The world’s landscapes are but the screen on which the past, present, and anticipated cosmic vanity of mankind is written. Land is the palimpsest of human needs, desires, meaning, greed, and fears’. James Houston’s vision of landscapes as reservoirs of the most fundamental aspects of humanity supports the cognitive value of traveling as far as interhuman relationships are concerned. This, in its interracial dimension, was a primary interest of John Howard Griffin. In 1959 the renowned white Texan journalist went on a tour of the Deep South, a quest preceded by a specific medical treatment resulting in Griffin’s skin turning black. The journey was documented in the bestselling memoir Black Like Me, which is a testimony of Griffin’s passing as a black man, the resulting alienation, dealing with ‘the hate stare’ and, finally, him re-examining his own racism. The aim of my article is to demonstrate that, although some critics claim his passing was a failure (e.g., Kate Baldwin’s assertion that Griffin’s blackness is only superficial as the author sustains his ‘white’ jargon both in thought and talk), the discussed memoir approaches the racial Other by sharing some vital features with the slave narrative (its purpose being the enhancement of communal consciousness or asking a white person to preface and thus authenticate the story).

Comment écrire le voyage aujourd’hui ? Comment se repérer dans la production pléthorique de la littérature des voyages ? Et comment appréhender un genre littéraire tellement décrié qu’il lui arrive d’être déprécié par ses auteurs mêmes ? En prenant appui sur les grands courants d’après-guerre, cet essai montre combien la guerre a opéré une profonde rupture dans le récit de voyage en France, et comment ce genre littéraire s’est reconstruit et régénéré jusqu’aujourd’hui en traversant les grandes étapes de l’histoire littéraire récente.

En prenant soin d’abord de définir le genre littéraire du récit de voyage, aussi éloigné de la fiction que du traité scientifique, on suit la trace des récits géographiques depuis 1945 de manière à repérer les tensions qui sont apparus entre les courants novateurs et les tendances conservatrices au sein du genre lui-même.

Apparaissent alors des tropismes ethnographiques, structuralistes et formalistes du récit de voyage. Ce livre donne des outils et des armes pour célébrer et critiquer la littérature viatique et aider la production contemporaine à renouer avec sa prestigieuse tradition. De Claude Lévi-Strauss à Jean Rolin, en passant par Michel Butor et Nicolas Bouvier, les écrivains voyageurs sont parvenus, peut-être à leur insu, à inventer une langue aux prises avec les changements du monde tout en dialoguant avec les origines du genre « voyage ».
