I can't tell you how thrilled I am to vote in Sight & Sound's Greatest Films Of All Time poll. Fifteen-year-old me would have never believed it.
I always liked François Truffaut's conception of a 'great' film, that it conveys an idea of the world and an idea of cinema or that it expresses the agony or the ecstasy of a film's making. So I've picked films, a mixture of bona fide classics and personal favourites, that tick at least one of those boxes. As with everyone, this list could be completely different tomorrow – Meshes Of The Afternoon, La Belle et la Bête , Seven Samurai, Amarcord, any number of Spielbergs, Gregory's Girl, The Draughtsman's Contract, Lady Bird, There Will Be Blood, Portrait of a Lady on Fire – but today I'll live with this ten.
