Origin and history of tofore
tofore(prep.)
Old English toforan, "in front, at the front part; before, in the presence of; earlier than, in advance of;" see to- (2) + fore. Hence toforetold "mentioned before;" toforehand (adv.) "previously, earlier;" toforetimes (adv.) "earlier, previously." Also toforeliving (n.) "an earlier way of life."
