August Is Hope - Sparrow Brooks

    AUGUST 1

Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit [which] was given to us.

    Romans 5:5

Hope is a powerful thing. Revolutions begin because of hope. The underdog throws off the oppressor because of hope. The destitute escape their circumstances because of hope. A mother, waiting in a hospital chair, hangs on by a thread, because of hope.

If you’re a Christian, your hope is stronger than that of people who do not know Christ because your hope is anchored in Him. Our hope originates in God. He tells us to be hopeful, and then proves to us why having hope can help us push through the most trying of times. When we have hope, even in the most desperate of situations, we can see God’s power and love working in the world.

Many times in my life, I have relied on my hope that something would change and my faith that God is capable of changing the circumstances. Sometimes, God’s will for my life allowed my hope to prosper, and He answered my hope with an affirmative. Sometimes, no matter how badly we hope for a specific outcome, what we want simply doesn’t work within His plans, and we have to let go of that ideal and find a new one. This can be painful at times, especially when we are hoping for the recovery of a loved one or hoping to get a new job or a new house. But we aren’t capable of understanding God’s bigger picture, the enormous plan He has for our life and others, so we have to accept the outcome and find a way to move on, never giving up on our hope because that’s what sees us through and helps to see the possibilities.

When I was younger, what I hoped for more than anything was that my parents would get remarried (to each other). It seems like a lofty wish, doesn’t it? For two people who’ve divorced each other to reunite? But you see, a wish is different than hope, at least for me, because my hope comes from God, and for me, a hope is a prayer.

God heard my prayer, and when I was eight years old, my parents got remarried. This taught me that anything in life was possible. I have never forgotten how happy I was on that day when my parents said their vows again. I was the flower girl at my parents’ wedding!

Sadly, it didn’t last, but in the eight years that they were married, they had two more daughters. I wouldn’t have my sisters if they hadn’t given things another shot.

This was the first time in my life when I hoped for something substantial and it became a reality (not counting the occasional hope that we might stop for ice cream or my cat might have kittens!) Throughout my life, there have been plenty of times when I’ve been faced with situations that didn’t seem favorable to my preferred outcome. I reminded myself, if God could bring my parents back together, He can do anything, so why would I give up on hoping for what I want?

Think back to a time in your life when you were hopeful for a specific outcome, and your hopes were fulfilled. How did you feel in that moment? Did you thank God for hearing you? Today, take some time to thank Him for giving you hope and for all of the prayers He’s answered in the form of your deepest hopes.

    Bible

    AUGUST 2

They shall not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

    Isaiah 11:9

As I’m writing this, at the beginning of July 2020, there seems to be a lot of hurting and destroying going on in the world. Perhaps it’s always been that way, but I can’t remember a time in my adult life when it seemed so prevalent and so visual to me, personally. I see people hurting from the cruelty of some of those who were meant to be protectors. I see destruction of property and the vandalism of private property and public buildings and landmarks. It seems like a dark time, and if I didn’t have hope that things will improve, if I didn’t have faith that God can make things better, if I didn’t have the knowledge that we are all in His hands, I might be a little more anxious than I normally am when I think about the state of the world.

But He is in control, and we can rely on that. He says we have the knowledge that they will not hurt or destroy His holy mountain--what belongs to Him. We can have faith that He will see
