This is not game-related, but I had nowhere else to vent. Don't know if any of you are basketball fans, but I just found out that my favorite player (Luka Doncic) got traded from my favorite team (Dallas) to the team that I dislike (LA Lakers). I feel shocked, empty, and betrayed. I'll still be a Dallas fan and I hope they beat Luka's ass whenever they meet, but man, this is the saddest I've been in a while.

This really doesn't make any sense, Luka didn't even requested a trade. Saw a lot of fans on reddit saying they will stop supporting the team after this.

I woke up to a couple of texts from friends. I don’t understand this at all. Dallas must really not have wanted to give that man $70 million a year on his next contract. The craziest part about all of this is that none of the players involved seems like they knew it was happening. There might be a bunch of pissed off other players (LeBron, Kyrie, etc.). This is the wildest trade I can ever remember happening. I’d be so pissed off if I were you. Luka is the 2nd or 3rd best player in the league.

I mean to be fair...I wouldn't wanna be paying somebody 70 million either...but I think sports athletes are usually paid too much anyway.

I know nothing about basketball.

I'll still be a Mavs fan, but I don't blame those guys. As you said, it makes no sense at all.

@peter

I feel like I still haven't fully processed it, like I'm about to wake up and see it was all a bad dream. I admit that Luka sometimes pissed me off, but he's not even in his prime yet. This was some god-tier mismanagement on the part of Dallas's front office.

Why are you awake? It’s like 6:25 on a Sunday there!

They do get paid a fuck ton, but my only actual complaint about is that we fans have to pay too much to go to the games and eat and drink etc. If the players weren’t getting their revenue share from the TV contracts, then the billionaire team owners would be the ones that get that money. In some ways I wish they were paid more because these guys that own the teams make a lot of money off of them generally.

And the worst part is that I honestly believe they could've gotten anyone in return for him. I'm not saying San Antonio would've straight up traded Wemby for Luka, but I'm sure they would've at least considered it.

That's late for me. I get up for work at 430 usually. Plus dogs.

As a San Antonio fan, they wouldn't have considered Luka at all. I don't think there's any player in the league that has the two-way potential that Wemby has. As much as I love watching Luka's offense, his defensive effort is really, really suspect.

When my friend told me about the trade, my jaw was on the floor! Why would Dallas trade away their future for a chance to win an immediate championship? How long can AD even stay healthy for? Will Kyrie even want to stay in Dallas if Luka is not there anymore? I also feel really bad for Luka and AD since they both loved playing for those cities. The fact that this was never discussed with either of them beforehand must suck BIG time.

Very, very foolish trade from the Mavs. Like you said, they could've gotten lots of better deals if they had tested out the market but no, they wanted to get rid of their franchise player (who took them to the finals last year) immediately.

Edit: sorry for also ranting lol. Also wanted to rant about this last night, but I thought Peter and I were the only nba fans on Grouvee

From my understanding, Mark Cuban isn't responsible for the decisions anymore since he's no longer the full owner of the team. But IF he was still there to call the shots, Luka would have never been traded in a million years. He loved Doncic as much as he did Dirk. Sucks that the front office does something so stupid the moment Cuban no longer has much say in the team.

Luka is the 2nd or 3rd best player in the league.

What's your list looking like this season?

I'd say for me:

  1. Jokic
  2. Giannis
  3. SGA
  4. I would put Luka at 4 or 5 personally.

I would like to think Wemby is already a top 10 player, but I think I'm being too biased there lol

I'd put Luka at 3 above SGA. SGA is night in and night out better in the regular season (because of durability), but Luka is possibly the most terrifying human being on the planet in the playoffs. If SGA just tears through the playoffs this year, I'd put him over Luka no problem.

Wemby is definitely top 10. He's going to be the best player in the NBA in 3 years max, probably sooner. The Spurs would have like 10 wins without him. You've got a couple potentially really good players to build with. They'll be annoyingly very good again soon.

That's fair! I didn't watch much Mavs playoffs games last year so I don't have a full understanding of how scary he can be in that setting.

Fox and the Spurs have great mutual interest, so I'm hoping they can finalize a deal that doesn't involve Castle or Sochan. If Spurs can get Fox, and acquire a solid big in the off-season, they'll be in really good position next year.

I'd also put Luka above SGA, and I believe Wemby is in the top 10 already. Congrats on the Fox trade. I believe they'll start dominating the league sooner rather than later. Happy for you guys.

Still can't wrap my head around it. It's not even a win-now move. How can you win now if your two best players are over 30 with a long history of being injured during the playoffs?

Yeah, I can't believe Spurs got Fox! We only lost Collins, Tre, and Sidy (who were fighting for playing time anyways) and four draft picks. I'm so glad that we didn't lose Sochan, Castle, Dev, or KJ. I'm excited for what this Spurs squad can do next season!

Well, AD at his best and healthiest is easily a top 3 or 5 big in the NBA. He's proven to be elite both ways, especially this season. So yeah, they're definitely banking on the fact that both stay healthy! Mavs can still make a great playoff push this year, imo

This is me when it comes to any professional sport. I stare at it and don't get it, but I understand being upset when things happen that are out of your control in a fandom and all you can do is sit in disbelief and watch mistakes being made. So I feel for the fans here, even though I do not know who these athletes are or why it is such a big deal when a ball goes into a basket with a hole in it and then falls out at the bottom. 🤭

Yeah, had a good laugh with all the jokes regarding this. No use crying over spilt milk though, so I just decided to move on. I'll forever miss Luka, but I'm actually kinda excited for this new-look Mavs.
