Gwyneth Paltrow is returning to the big screen.

The Goop founder will resume her acting career in A24’s Marty Supreme, a drama inspired by pro table-tennis players. The project, confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, also stars Timothée Chalamet, and will be Paltrow’s first film since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

While exciting, the news comes as a surprise. Paltrow previously indicated that she was stepping away from acting to focus on Goop, her lifestyle and wellness brand, which she founded in 2008. “I’m still going to do a little bit [of acting] here and there, but [Goop] really requires almost all of my time,” she said on Today in 2017. “I had an incredible acting career, but I had this deep passion to produce content and make great products and curate things. It sort of evolved slowly and had a long gestational period and now it’s, like, a real business.”

Still, Marty Supreme and its cast may have piqued Paltrow’s interest. After all, Chalamet has seen major success over the past year with his films Wonka and Dune: Part Two, and will soon continue his streak with the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, in which he plays the protagonist. This June, A24 confirmed the actor’s role in its upcoming Ping-Pong drama with a concise tweet reading, “Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme starring Timothée Chalamet. Coming soon.”

Not much else is known about Marty Supreme, although there have been rumors that Chalamet’s character takes cues from Marty Reisman, who in 1997 became the oldest Ping-Pong player to win an open national competition. The late athlete was a fixture of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The film, however, is said to be a “fictionalized original film” and not a biopic, per THR.

Aside from Chalamet and Paltrow, no other names have been added to the movie’s cast. But if the project could bring the Goop founder back to acting, it’s worth keeping an eye on as production begins.
