Matt McLain looked like a budding star following a 2023 campaign where he debuted for the Reds and slashed an incredible .290/.357/.507 in 89 games en route to a fifth place finish in NL Rookie of the Year voting that year. Impressive as McLain was, however, his rising star came crashing down when he suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery last March. He missed the entire 2024 campaign rehabbing but seemed poised to re-enter the club’s middle infield mix as the starting second baseman next to star shortstop Elly De La Cruz for 2025.
That was before the Reds landed Gavin Lux in a trade with the Dodgers, however. Lux has played second base for the overwhelming majority of his big league career outside of the rare cameo in the outfield and a few ill-fated attempts to try him at shortstop. As noted by Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer, club president Nick Krall has indicated that he expects Lux to play second base, left field, and DH for the Reds this year while also getting looks during Spring Training at third base and even shortstop as they look to sort out their mix of position players.
It’s a complicated puzzle the Reds will need to sort out this spring. De La Cruz is surely entrenched at shortstop, while Wittenmyer notes that Krall left the door open for veteran Jeimer Candelario to get the first crack at third base this year even after he struggled defensively at the position during an injury-marred 2024 campaign. If Candelario is at third base, that would open up first base for either Spencer Steer or Christian Encarnacion-Strand. Should Lux end up at second base, that would leave McLain without a spot on the infield, but it’s worth noting that the youngster took reps in center field during the Arizona Fall League this year and that C. Trent Rosencrans of The Athletic recently suggested that McLain could get a look in the outfield himself during Spring Training.
That complex infield picture seems likely to have a domino effect on the club’s outfield this year. Jake Fraley, Austin Hays, and TJ Friedl appear to be the three full-time outfielders locked into the Reds’ roster, but Fraley has long been a platoon player for Cincinnati while both Hays and Friedl are coming off difficult and injury-marred 2024 campaigns. That could open the door for the club’s excess infielders to take reps on the grass, with McLain standing out as an option in center field alongside Friedl while Steer and Lux could both be candidates to patrol the outfield corners.
Turning to the pitching staff, the club has an excess of potential starting pitching options that rivals its excess of potential infield options. Even before veteran Wade Miley returns from Tommy John surgery in May, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com notes that Hunter Greene, Brady Singer, Nick Lodolo, Andrew Abbott, Nick Martinez, Rhett Lowder, Graham Ashcraft, Carson Spiers, and perhaps even non-roster invitee Chase Petty could be candidates for a rotation job with the club. The most likely starting five in that group, however, figures to be Greene, Singer, Lodolo, Abbott, and Martinez.
Notably, that leaves Ashcraft on the outside looking in. The right-hander has spent his entire big league career in the rotation so far, making 60 starts across the past three seasons. The results have left something to be desired, however, as he’s posted a lackluster 4.91 ERA (92 ERA+) in that time. That includes a 5.24 ERA (84 ERA+) in 77 1/3 innings of work across 15 starts last year. As noted by Rosencrans in a recent mailbag, Ashcraft appears unlikely to make the club’s rotation and may have even fallen behind Lowder to the seventh spot on the club’s rotational depth chart at this point.
That makes Ashcraft a prime candidate to move into a bullpen role, and Rosencrans notes that there’s an “internal belief” that Ashcraft could find success at the back of the bullpen for the Reds if he doesn’t make the cut for the club’s starting rotation. Alexis Diaz had a rollercoaster season in the closer role in 2024, and if he or veteran set-up men Taylor Rogers and Emilio Pagan struggle in 2025 it wouldn’t be difficult to imagine Ashcraft getting an opportunity to prove himself as a high leverage reliever.
Graham Ashcraft has a similar repertoire as Emmanuel Clase. Not as good, but similar. Maybe it gets better in the bullpen too. Francona is obviously very familiar with Clase. Hope to see that happen.
Wouldn’t Ashcraft make a good trade candidate? Reds have so many starters, trade one for something of need.
Ignorant: Ashcraft wouldn’t bring back very much, especially based on last year’s #’s. He’d need to show improvements 1st. As it appears “on paper”,that’s going to be hard to do with the rest of the competition he’s got. So,imo, it’s off to the bullpen he goes.
This is true. We’ll wait until he posts above 30% K rates, then we’ll trade him for a backup catcher
After releasing the previous guy even though you had no other catchers in the organization but your starter.
Ashcraft has a 100 mph cutter?
Yeah, I think as a starter it usually sat 97-99 but as a reliever he certainly could get that to 100-101…is it as dirty as Clase’s,…nope, but he throws it hard as hell.
CAN I USE ALL CAPS TO TALK LOWDER?
APPARENTLY YES, though you might regRHETT it.
Some of best relievers are failed starters. Maybe he figures it out in bullpen, couldnt hurt looking @his starter #s. Baseball God’s have a way of thinning out “an excess of pitchers.” Can Never Have Too Much Good Pitching. Look @Dodgers @end of playoffs running on fumes n they were stocked before injuries. Normal seasons attrition.
I thought ALL relievers are failed starters.
Not John Smoltz
Ahhhhhh, of course ! Okay maybe 99.9% of all relievers are failed starters then??
Andrew Chafin is and has the t-shirt to prove it.
Not Dennis Eckersley
Okay make that 99.78%
Looks like a really long year.
Yep when you make it to the World Series it generally entails a long season
I’d like to see the Reds take a flier on Anthony Rizzo. If healthy he could rake in that ballpark
To take ab’s away from CES? No thank you. Let’s not forget in the ’23 season he led the entire organization in HR’s. Laugh if you want, but this kid has Puhols type strength and power. Last series of ’23 in St. Louis, he hit a bomb out to left, and I heard the crowd audibly gasp.
Like you, I am big on CES. With what he has shown in the minors and if he is injury free, he has the potential to be the Red’s first baseman going forward. He is certainly deserving of the opportunity. I wouldn’t let Candelario or even Steer get in his way at least until he proves otherwise.
As a Cardinals fan, gasping was not the sound I made. My sound ended with a T or was it a K.
Same sounds I made when Albert played in Cincy..
I think Rizzo might be done. He couldn’t even hit during his walk year in 2024.
He was mostly injured though.
Which isn’t likely to change as he’s had chronic back issues for years, and that undiagnosed concussion that left him in a flat spin for most of the year.
Yep, getting a 35 year old 1b coming off a .227 year with 8 homers is the hidden recipe for success.
Having more quality players than available spots is a good problem to have.
Over the course of the year it’ll work itself out.
Yeah you really need 9 guys for the 8 spots in the lineup not counting catcher. Especially if you have lefties that would be better not facing lefty pitchers. And even with 9 someone will probably get hurt so more depth beyond that is good too.
I would like to see Dipoto trade for either McClain or Lux, whomever ends up being the odd man out at 2B. Maybe for Hancock and/or an upper level pitching prospect not named Logan Evans.
Idk who would choose lux over McLain
McLain would be a nice add for the Tigers at SS to kick Baez to the curb and Sweeney into a backup role. I’m not sure how well they would match up though. They don’t really have any expendable young outfielders who would be of interest to Cincy, as they need Meadows, Greene and Carpenter themselves and it would be extremely doubtful they’d trade any of them. Detroit is like Cincinnati with most of their good position players being middle infielders (other than Clark who isn’t going anywhere). They certainly have some good bullpen arms and young pitching they coukd trade from. Probably wishful thinking.
McLain isn’t going anywhere…for another three years at least.
McClain is coming off shoulder surgery. He’s not playing ss.
I don’t think Cincinnati would entertain a trade for Matt McLain. He has such a high ceiling and has already performed incredibly well. The only way I believe the Reds would trade him is if they were completely blown away, ie, Detroit needs to trade the Farm…
But, I don’t see any comparable between he and Lux. McLain has already performed better, Lux has less control, and thus Lux would be much cheaper to trade for – more in line with your proposal.
I wonder why they would give 2B to Lux over McLain? McLainnis vlearlyvthe betrer player, unlees the seriously see him as a CF or may e a supersub in the Ha Seong Kim mold. I’m not a big fan of Lux and there is nowhere for him to play in Detroit with Torres on board. McLain is a guy who would be an upgrade but I don’t see a fit clean fit there for a trade and I personally wouldn’t trade him either if I’m Cincinnati. Wishful thinking on my part!
The only reason I can see the Reds giving 2nd base to Lux over McLain is that the Reds are not 100% certain that McLain is ready to go full time at the beginning of the season. The Reds are a conservative organization. The Reds may want to gradually work McLain in as the full time starter vs expecting him to go full throttle on day one.
I think McLain will start at 2B most of the time with Lux moving around. McLain is the 2nd best offensive player on the team behind Elly. He isn’t going anywhere.
You stopped after the first paragraph, apparently. They have more SP than infielders. They’d want a back end BP arm
Reds have competition for just about every spot on the active roster. Still a work in progress, but improved over last year.Looking forward to enjoying warm weather and Reds baseball in 2 weeks.
Given the reds depth I wonder if they’d be willing to trade
Steer Petty and Maxwell for Suarez.
Put Steer at 1B and get a couple arms in Petty rotation and Maxwell pen.
Suarez has some value but not that kind of value.
Robert Suarez? Seems like a lot to give up.
Dude is a soon to be 34 year old reliever, that’s quite the package for such a player.
Getting Steer alone for Suarez would be a steal.
Yea that’s closer to a return for Cease and Suarez.
Suarez’ contract inclides a player option for 2027 of $8MM. For the Reds that’s an absolute deal buster. Padres would have to cover that $8MM and take Pagan and his current $8MM contract just to start a trade conversation for Suarez.
Reds will keep all that depth. Their injury prevention has been at the bottom of the league for some time now. Plus they have plenty of bullpen options and no funds to pay Suarez
They don’t have any depth. This offense is still a major question mark, requires so many rebound players. And the bullpen is super weak.
Yeah it’s e z to hate on the reds for sure. But they do have 9 starters with proven mlb success. So if they convert Lodolo- he’s ceiling is Josh hader + Diaz gives them an elite L/R combo to finish out games. So not bad for their standards.
Right now their 5th infielder is Gavin lux and their 6th is Marte who’s a former top 25 prospect. Again, not bad for reds standards. OF is a little light but they can always convert an IF
Seems like you are just hatin to me ??
Pretty sure Nick Krall hung that phone up after he got up off the floor laughing.
Preller would love to be able to make that fantasy trade.
Steer seems like more than enough on his own. Suarez is a rental because the only way he opts into the other 2 years is if he’s horrible or injured. Petty maybe because of Cincy’s depth in the rotation, but as a Tigers fan, idk how good he is. I just know he’s a starter from the article. Suarez will be a cost drop with the hope of getting a hole filled somewhere else, like the back end of the rotation, for SD.
Who would make that deal? One of them for Suarez maybe.
Competition is good. Depth is good. But all this conjecture about what the reds are going to do with their lineups feels like over complicating it most of the time. Put Elly at SS, McClain at 2B, and Steer in LF for 150 games and leave it.
McClain has to prove he can come back from a shoulder injury first
Fair, but I will say all reports are he’s healthy and even played AZ Fall League
With his pedigree and the season he had in 2023 though it will absolutely be his position with a long lead, unlike a Marte or CES who definitely need to win their spots
A lot of position players, true, but a lot of hoping and wishing, especially for the ones coming off injury, which is a lot. Hopefully Tito can manipulate them the right way to get the most out of them, because the front office sure didn’t help much, especially in the outfield.
I always said Ashcraft and Lodolo would end up in the bullpen as a solid duo. Nasty Boys reincarnated? Who knows.
I agree. If Lodolo continues to have the nagging injuries, the pen may be his solution. Shorter stints on the mound might help the blister problem he has. I think Elly at 3B and McClain at SS is also the long term solution for the left side of the infield. Elly is already starting to outgrow SS. Keith Law is reporting Duno has outgrown catcher as well. There is not a whole lot you can do about size and mother nature. You will lose speed, range and quickness sooner rather than later if you have a large body frame.
Outgrown SS? Do you even watch the Reds? Dude is all over the grass making plays. He had errors last year but nobody else gets to the balls he does.
How long can he do it with the body type he has? Big guys fall off early. That is a fact of life. You are postponing the inevitable, plus he makes too many errors. Can he overcome both? The latter is possible, but the former is much less so. You already have two pure shortstops in McClain and Arroyo (not that far away). I like what I see in Arroyo both offensively and defensively.. Will the team be better with Elly at SS with all his errors or plugging the hole at 3B where range won’t be a factor going forward and also shoring up SS defensively? If McClain’s injury holds him back at SS, you can fall back on Arroyo. I am a strong proponent of elite defense up the middle which includes the pitcher, catcher and CF.. Just my 2 cents from years of experience… .
Elly is 6′ 5″ tall and weighs 200 lbs right now. He is sure to gain weight with his frame. How many 6′ 5″ successful shortstops has there ever been in the major leagues long term? There may have been some, but off hand I can’t think of a single one. I think what we are seeing right now as far as him being a long term option at ss is “fools gold”. He has the range and quickness today, but a few years from now, that likely won’t be the case. Then there is the error issue that has to be solved.
Cal Ripken was 6’4″ and Corey Seager too
Asking the same question Redsforlife asked…do you ever watch the Reds play? Elly is a magician at SS.
Ashcraft has to regain his control. That’s the only thing he has of major league value. If so, his style may fit in pen but low velocity control pitchers make better starters imo
I wouldn’t say upper 90s is low velocity.
Low velocity? Fastball and sinker both average around 96 mph. Hell his change up averages 90.
They must be unsure about McClain’s health to begin the season cuz you don’t supplant him for Lux who shucks by comparison
I see Lux as more UT insurance if any of Marte/Espinal/CES can’t put it together/replicate
Dhud I agree. McLain will be the starting 2B with Lux starting there maybe once a week.
Best off season I’ve seen in a long time for reds ! Hopefully injuries even themselves out this year and they can enjoy a healthier season. Brewers, although excellent at developing talent, have to take a step back this season. Cubs look like a contender. Hopefully reds can start hot and keep pace then use their deep system to add quality at the deadline and compete for the central this year !
Francona will figure out fitting the puzzle pieces both in the lineup and which arms should move to the bullpen. There is a lot of good clay, and he can do better than FO to determine what works in maximizing each player’s role over a long season. He won’t care about meaningless rankings of current/recent past prospects.
Hopefully how much they are making don’t enter into it either. But I think Tito would be out of there fast if the front office starts trying to tell him who to play.
I like the Reds starting pitching. They have a very good top 4. No real Aces, but very solid. They have a very good young lineup too. This is the year they should have tried to get Santander or Teoscar for some power in the OF. The only addition to the lineup I would make is maybe adding Rizzo as lefty DH.
CF Friedl
SS de la Cruz
2B McClain
DH Rizzo
1B CES
RF Frayley
LF Lux
C Stephenson
3B Candelario
There is zero chance Steer isn’t in the lineup
Steer gets plenty of playing time as RF/LF/3B/1B/DH
You would add Rizzo before playing Steer? I don’t think I’d do that.
Rizzo adds a lefty power bat to a righty leaning lineup. Rizzo can take walks. Like I said, they should have been in on Santander, but Rizzo is about all that’s left.
Rizzo’s numbers the past 2 years were pretty bad. I doubt it would take much to try and get him for DH. But if he can’t hit any more, then no sense. He was hurt… I just don’t know if he’s better now. Rizzo is 35… he might be done.
Hunter Greene got Cy Young votes last year
He absolutely could be a bonafide ace this year – I’d say even was last year
Where’s Steer? He smokes Rizzo
Hunter Greene finished 8th in Cy Young balloting last season he is the Red’s ace.
Reds roster is just a lot of nothing, only EDLC and Greene.
Earlier in the offseason Jeimer came up as a possible NYY 3b target. I still think they could line up for a trade.
Let’s hope.
Please take him
The Reds will probably keep Candelario unless/until Marte or one of their other 3B prospects (Collier, Stewart) push him out of the way.
CES, Steer, and Espinal can all play 3B so he can be pushed now.
I think it would take some cash (at least 5 million) going their way as well as mid level prospect or two depending on how much cash. I would expect zero in return except for the payroll relief.
This is Reds. Not Red Sox. You just read Red and ran with it, lol. All good though. They might have to give up one of Rafaela, Abreu or Casas to get Arenado, since you’re on the subject.
I like that thought.
SS McLain
CF Friedl
3B De La Cruz
LF Steer
RF Fraley
1B Strand
2B Lux
C Stephenson
DH Candelerio
Hays would probably play RF against lefties in this setup. Not sure how Lux hits them. Might see Espinal then.
1 McLain CF
2 EDLC SS
3 Steph C
4 Candy 3B
5 Lux 2B
6 Hays RF
7 Fraley DH
8 Steer 1B
9 Friedl LF
C Trevino
INF Espinal
INF/OF Bowman
OF Fairchild
CES, Marte, and Benson in AAA
Greene, Lodolo, Singer
Abbott, Martinez
Diaz, Ashcraft
Santillan, Moll
Pagan, Rogers
Zueleta, Suter
This is best version imo. But give CES a chance to break camp and earn 1b job. If he can, they need to move someone to outfield. Maybe lux in a super utility role
Reds should also be monitoring casas. If Red Sox sign Bregman, they may be able to buy low on him
Lineups by M17 & fs7 are somewhat similar. The big difference over 2024 is that there’s no #7 Marte, #8 Benson, & #9 Maile. Hays, Espinal, Steer, &Trevino are all major improvements.
As a Cardinals fan, injuries are the only thing I see keeping the Reds from running away with the NLC.
Cubs are stout. Their lineup is average yet streaky. And rotation is solid.
I predict 40% fewer tootblans under Tito. That right there is a major improvement.
Candelario sucks. McClain can be 3B when Lux is in the lineup. Steer in left. Marte the odd man out barring injury.
