The decision to continue the found-footage style with a video camera in a life-threatening situation felt contrived and unrealistic, diminishing the suspense that made the original so impactful. Available on Netflix, this film may disappoint fans of the cult classic Blair Witch Project. It missed the mark in capturing the essence and fear of the Blair Witch, instead contributing to a string of lackluster sequels that diluted the franchise's legacy. In contrast, the 1999 Blair Witch Project succeeded in creating an unsettling atmosphere through its use of found footage, sparking fear and leaving viewers questioning the reality of the events depicted. The original film's actors and actresses played their roles convincingly, adding to the illusion of reality and instilling fear in viewers. However, subsequent installments, particularly the second film, veered into cheesy and unreliable territory, losing the supernatural suspense that made the original so effective. Overall, the mishandling of the Blair Witch franchise post the original film led to a decline in fear factor and quality. Subpar adaptations failed to recapture the chilling essence of the first movie, ultimately diluting the impact of the Blair Witch myth and diminishing the franchise's reputation in the horror genre. The movie succeeds in delivering a unique take on an atmospheric horror film. Despite its messy narrative, when the film focuses on the dark aspects of the occult world, it really succeeds. It may not be a perfect film by any means but I can respect it for what it was trying to accomplish. An applause for Erica Leerhsen who marked a decade with her appearances in horror films. And a wink at Kim Director who took a risk in becoming the character we all wanted to be. Every character in this movie is either boring or insufferable every second they're on screen. This movie isn't even a Blair Witch movie, nothing from the first film comes back except the forest, which by the way, is only in the movie for a couple of minutes. Everything else is either uncreative or just absolutely awful. Every plot point feels forced and unnatural, every actor is either boring at best or unbelievably poorly done at worst.
