Critics Consensus

In spite of Aubrey Plaza's committed performance, Life After Beth remains a sketch-worthy idea that's been uncomfortably stretched to feature length.

Jason Bailey Flavorwire Plaza gives the film its motor, and if Baena's control of the material is occasionally uncertain, 'Life After Beth' plays best when it feeds off her manic, gonzo energy, and runs with it. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Getting people in creepy makeup to gurn and shuffle and get shot isn't automatically scary plus hilarious. Rated: 2/5 Oct 5, 2014 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) Plaza steals the show with one foot in the grave, her rotting heroine ricocheting between adolescent snarkiness and cadaverous rage, a lethal combination of which no one around her has the measure. Rated: 3/5 Oct 5, 2014 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Even if it delivers a number of expected jokes and gags, there's enough surprising elements that are brought to life by an immensely talented cast of comedians to entirely elevate the material. Rated: 4/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review In the long tradition of zombie metaphors, the whole movie stands as an allegory for dealing with the heartache of loss, be it the loss of life, or simply a bad breakup where the other party seems to become a raging monster afterward. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 5, 2022 Full Review Dan Brightmore NME (New Musical Express) Dane DeHaan and Aubrey Plaza go for the jugular with undead laughs in a zombie rom-com. Audience Member A fine cast is completely wasted in this poorly written and directed zombie pile of poop. I thought A24 used to release good films, but that was then. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE... Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review alan g A tv skit stretched out to movie length. Horrible cast. Decent directing with poor actors to work with. Aubrey Plastered should give up acting and go to the circus. Her manic performances would do well there. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review Rob R Better than the reviews would suggest. Plaza is excellent, DeHaan is very good and the rest of the cast are capable if underutilized. Anna Kendrick’s character seemed like an afterthought and a little pointless to me. I enjoyed it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/06/24 Full Review edward d Absolutely terrible movie there is no point to it good actors but bad acting Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/12/24 Full Review Donald S Such an odd but fun movie that should be treated as such. An unreal cast stacked with talent. Cameos from the great Anna Kendrick and from Cheryl Heinz. Paul Reiser had some funny lines in a limited role. John C Reilly is great in everything but Aubrey Plaza absolutely kills in this role. She steals every scene. Why these zombies start coming around isn't explained, we don't see Beth die at the start which is also weird and we didn't see the couple together at any point so we had to assume he loved her to justify his crazy antics which makes little sense since it was the point in the movie. It also felt a little stretched that I wasn't sure where further they could go with it. Still it was entertaining and I had a couple genuine laugh out loud moments with Plaza. Had they addressed these things this would be a gem. Still entertaining and very worth a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/09/24 Full Review Scott B I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
