What to Know

Critics Consensus

Depicting Gotham through bone-breaking punches rather than popping onomatopoeia, The Penguin is a grounded crime saga given gravitas by Colin Farrell and a scene-stealing Cristin Milioti.

Kelly Lawler USA Today It's a fully realized story all on its own, which is what every TV show should be, spinoff or not. Rated: 3/4 Oct 2, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) Craig Zobel has a strong grasp of The Penguin’s tone, keeping it shadowy but not grim where the characters’ psychic wounds drive all their choices and the action. Sep 25, 2024 Full Review Mike Hale New York Times "The Penguin” feels mechanical and recycled, constructed rather than imagined. Mob-movie clichés about honor and service are recited in lifeless dialogue and then recited again; the action often undercuts them but not in any witty or exciting way. Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Robert W. Butler Butler's Cinema Scene If you didn’t know it was Colin Farrell beneath that makeup you’d never guess. Hell, you’d not guess that it was makeup. It’s a metamorphosis so complete that even after watching the entire first season I can’t wrap my brain around it. Nov 9, 2024 Full Review Nestor Bentancor Nestor Cine Desde Hollywood What we saw in "The Batman" was just the tip of the iceberg. The thrilling, darkly comedic crime drama, aims at exploring the complex nature of its iconic characters, including Gotham. This penguin is an emperor! Nov 8, 2024 Full Review Sarah Marrs Lainey Gossip The real joy of The Penguin is Cristin Milioti’s performance, and any scene she shares with Farrell, when it really feels like two great actors going for it and leaving nothing on the table. Pasquale M Absolute cinema this show is, I demand justice for one beloved character! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Todd B I thought it was great. Lots of emotional twists and turns, genuinely surprised. All the main actors had some incredible moments. It was more Sopranos-y than comic book-y, except sometimes the major events of being captured and breaking free weren't particularly realistic. But that wasn't the heart and sould of the show. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Eduardo R One of the best series I've ever seen! This new cinematic universe called "Batman Epic Crime Saga" started with a bang! The script is incredible, it manages to tell a story about Oswald Cobblepot without remaking the character turning him into a good guy, they manage to tell the story of a man who is a villain from start to finish, on a tense and incredible journey to become the king of Gotham. All the actors bring their characters to life perfectly, but the highlight goes to this great trio, Colin Farrell, who for me so far is the best Penguin in the history of cinema and series, Cristin Milioti, who gave life to the scary and incredible Sofia Falcone and Rhenzy Feliz, great and faithful squire of Oz. The cinematography in this series is also chilling, I've never seen Gotham as beautiful as in this series. I also congratulate the wonderful soundtrack, both the well-known and the original ones created by Mick Giacchino. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Walfred J It is a great show I didnt expect much but it left me wanting more. I hope that The Batman 2 movie continue story. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Nancy M Very entertaining. Unpredictable. Hope there’s another season. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Lyubo T Simply amazing! The last TV show I watched before "The Penguin" was "Disclamer", which felt like a total waste of time for its weak, poorly assembled and lacking common sense story, and I was a bit concerned whether I would feel the same for this one. I just watched the season finale, and I feel thankful I didn't miss that out. To me, this is Colin Farrell's best work so far. Never thought an Irishman could pick up the NY-NJ Italian accent so well, or that such a great mob saga could come out of Batman stories. Every detail of the story, the acting, pace, camerawork, colors, etc. was spot on. Highly reccomended! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Read all reviews
