Introduction
We commonly use statements, such as, speed of the bicycle is 5m/s or the speed of the car is 90km/h. What do these statements signify? Well, in a way we are trying to express the distance covered by a body in unit time. In the above expressions, the bicycle covers a distance of 5m after every one second. Similarly, the car covers a distance of 90km in every one hour. Thus to sum up:
Units of Speed
In SI System, the unit of speed is metre per second (m/s or ms -1).
For measuring larger speeds, the unit is kilometre per hour (km/h or kmh-1)
Average Speed
In practical life, most bodies move with a non uniform speed. When you drive a scooter from your house to school, you know that you have to change its speed from time to time depending upon the road conditions. In such a situation, what is the speed of your scooter? Well, we can calculate , the speed by finding the total distance travelled and dividing it by the total time taken by the journey. The total distance travelled by the total time taken is called average speed. Average Speed=Total Distance travelled/ Total time taken
Numerical Problem 1
A cyclist covers a distance of 1.5 km in 2.5 minutes. Calculate the speed in: (a)Metre per second(m/s) (b)Kilometre per hour(km/h)
NUMERICAL PROBLEM 2
A train travels a distance of 20 km with a uniform speed of 60 km/h. It travels another distance of 40 km with a uniform speed of 80 km/h. Calculate the average speed of the train.
NUMERICAL PROBLEM 3 The train A travelled a distance of 120 km in 3 hours whereas another train B travelled a distance of 180 km in 4 hours. Which train travelled faster?
NUMERICAL PROBLEM 4 A car travels 30 km at a uniform speed of 40km/h and the next 30km at a uniform speed of 20 km/h. Find its average speed.
Solution:
Case(i):
Speed = Distance travelled / Time taken (t1) 40km/h = 30km/ Time taken (t1) Time=30/40 = 3/4 Time (t1) = 3/4h
Case(ii): Speed=20km/h Distance=30km Time=?
Speed = Distance travelled / Time taken(t2) 20km/h =30/Time taken(t2) Time(t2) = 30/20 = 3/2h
