OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the discussion , I can;
A.Define speed and Velocity;
B.Calculate the speed and velocity on
several differents examples;and
C.Participate in the activity of
discussion.
Mechanics:
In each group , you are going to
choose or assign 5 students in your
own group to go infront to arrange
the jumbled letters.I will give you
15 seconds to arranged it .
SPEED
and
VELOCITY
SPEED
speed is the rate of distance
covered at a given time.
FORMULA:
speed =distance
time

V = d/t
UNIT OF MEASUREMENTS

• kilometers per hour (km/h)

• meters per second (km/s)
• miles per hour (m/h)
SAMPLE PROBLEM 1
Joseph travels to school by bus.The bus
usually travels for 2 hours and 4
kilometers to get to school. What do you
think is the speed of the bus?

The speed of the bus is 2 km/h.

SAMPLE PROBLEM 2:
It takes a fast swimmer about 25
seconds to complete 100 kilometers
freestyle .What is the speed of the
swimmer?

The speed of the swimmer is 4 km/s.

VELOCITY
 velocity is a speed with
direction.
FORMULA:
UNIT OF MEASUREMENTS

• kilometers per hour (km/h)

• meters per second (m/s)
SAMPLE PROBLEM 1:
Joseph travels to school by bus.The
bus usually travels 2 hours and 4
kilometers to get to school. If the
displacement of the bus is 3 kilometers
northeast, what do you think is the
velocity of the bus?
The velocity of the bus is 1.5 km/h NE.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 2
Calculate the velocity of car that
travels 50 kilometers northeast in 5
hours?

The velocity of the car is 10 km/h.

AVERAGE SPEED
average speed is
the total distance
traveled divided by
the total time
traveled.
AVERAGE VELOCITY
average velocity is
the total
displacement divided
by the total time with
direction.
INSTANTANEOUS SPEED
INSTANTANEOUS VELOCITY
instantaneous velocity is the speed
at a specific point in time with
direction.
=75 km/hour North East

Note: Just put Northeast ,because

the bus is going to Northeast.
CONSTANT MOTION
constant motion refers to any type
of motion ,when either the distance
traveled by the object is the same
for each second.
MECHANICS:
In each group you are going to
analyze and solve the problems to
develop your skills in problem
solving.Write your solutions in your
science notebook.(5 pts each)
Activity:
1.A car travels between 2 towns in 60
kilometers apart in 2 hours. What its
average speed?
2.If a person can walk with an
average speed of 2 m/s , how far will
they be able to walk in 4 min.?
3.It took 2.50 hours for a car to travels
a distance of 150 kilometers.What is
its average speed?
4.What is the speed of the baseball
that travels 49 meters in 2.4 seconds?
DIRECTION:Determine the following quantities wether it is
speed or velocity.1-5
MEASUREMENTS SPEED or VELOCITY

1. 2 miles per hour

2.15 meters per hour west
3.8 meters per second
4. 5 kilometers per hour
5.50 meters per second
6. 3 miles per hour East
7.15 meters per second
8.15 meters per second North
9.10 kilometers per hour West
10. 10 kilometers per hour south
