DAY 1
Drill:
Tell whether the following are
expression or equation
1.9x +3=4x +11
2.2x +3 +3x +17
3.8x +6 + 5x +14
4.11x +9 =2x +8
5.3x 7= 3x +20
What is the cheapest and simplest
form of transportation that is
beneficial to our body?
Yes, biking
Present the problem below:
Paul rode his bike and travelled 24 kilometers
from his grandparent’s farm to their house in 2
hours. What is the rate of the speed?
a. Who
Speed rode
is the rate afast

b. Where is he going?___________
c. How far is his grandparent’s farm to their
house? ____________________________
d. How many hours did he spent in biking?______
e. What is asked in the problem?
Speed is the rate of how fast something moves over a
distance. Speed is measured by the distance traveled by
time.
D= 40 kilometers
Then Paul decided to travel 18 kilometers at a rate of 12
kilometers per hour to visit his friend Nico. How long was
his journey going to Nico’s place?
Let’s substitute:
18 kilometers
12 kilometers/hour
t= 1.5 hours
The relationship between speed,
distance and time can be expressed in
the ff. equations:
Speed, Distance and Time Formula
2. d= 100 km 5. d= 13 m
t= 5 hrs s= 4 m/hr
s= ___________ t= ___________
3. d= 400 km
s= 80 km/hr
t= ___________

A man rides the bike with the speed of 30 kilometers
in 3/4 hours. Calculate the speed of the bike in
a. Kilometers/hour
b. Meter/sec
Solution # 1:
a. Speed in Kilometers/hour
= 27,000 m
3,600 s
s = 7.50 m/s
A dog runs from one side of a
park to the other. The park is
80.0 meters across. The dog
takes 16.0 seconds to cross the
park. What is the speed of the
dog?
Solution # 3:
The distance the dog travels and the time it takes are given.
Where d=180 meters and the time= 16 seconds
80 m
16 s
s = 5.0 m/s
D= S x t
= 70 km × 3.5 hr
hr
D= 245 km.
Other Examples:
Example 1:
How much distance will be covered
in 7 hrs at a speed of 62 km per
hour?
Solution:
What is asked? Distance
Speed = 62 km./h
time=7 hours
Formula: Distance = Speed × Time
Distance = 62 km × 7 h
h
= 434 km.
Therefore, distance covered in 7 hrs = 434
km.
Example 2:
2. s= 100 kph
t= 5 hrs
d= __________
_
3. s= 400 kpm
t= 8.5 hr
d= ___________
4. s= 1200 m/s
t= 3,600 s
d= ___________
5. s= 3600 m/s
s= 2 hr
d= ___________
GROUP ACTIVITY
1.How much distance will be covered in 7
hrs. at a speed of 62 km per hour?
t = D/S
=200 miles
60 miles/hour
t=3.33 hours
Example # 2
2. A car travels at the speed of 60
kilometers per hour. How many
hours will it take the car to travel
180 km?
Solution:
t= Distance ÷ Speed or
t=D where D=180km
S S= 60 km/h
S= 3 h
Example # 3
3. A bus travels at a speed of 80
km/hour. How long will it travel if
it covers a distance of 240 km?
Solution:
t=?
speed=80 km/h
distance=240 km
Formula:
t=D =240 km
S 80 km/h
t=3 h
Discuss the conversion units of
time.

1.A cycle race is going on, a cyclist is
moving with the speed of 2 km/hr.
He has to cover a distance of 5 km.
How much time will he need to
reach his destination?
2. In a flight of 600 km, an aircraft was
slowed down due to bad weather. Its
average speed for the trip was
reduced by 200 km/hr and the time of
flight increased by 30 minutes. What is
the duration of the flight ?

DAY 4
Review:
How do we calculate the speed,
distance and time?
What are the methods do we use in
solving story problems?
In solving problems involving
average rate and speed,
given the two other quantities, we
can calculate for the missing Speed,
Distance or Time using the Techan’s
Triangle.
Present the story problem:
Step 1: Determine what information are given and what is unknown in the problem.
Given: D=150 miles
T= 3 hours
S= ?
Step 2: Set up the formula for Speed.
Where, S equals the average speed
D equals the total distance
T equals the total time
Step 3: Substitute the values .
D= 150 miles
T= 3 hours
Step 4: Solve
150 miles
3 hours
S= 50 miles per hour
so if Ben traveled 150 miles in 3 hours, his average speed was 50 miles per hour.
Example # 2:
In this problem, we were given a speed of 65kms per hour, and time of 4.5 hours.
To find the total distance traveled, we can simply multiply the given speed and
time.
Distance = 65 km x 4.5 hours
hr.
Answer: He traveled 292.5 kilometers
Example # 3:
To find the time traveled, we can simply divide the given distance
and speed.
t=D D= 180 kms
S S = 45 kms/ hr
t= 4 hours
Step 1: Determine what information are given and what is unknown in the problem.
Given:
D1 = 150 miles T1= 3 hours
D2 = 120 mile T2= 2 hours
D3= 70 miles T3= 1 hour
S=?
Step 2: Set-up the formula for average speed.
Therefore the formula is
