STOCK MARKET REPORT


The PSEi soared to a new all-time high on 16 March closing at 5,145.89 points, brought about by positive U.S. labor data and improved industrial activities. The benchmark index ended the month at 5,107.73 points, up by 4.3% or 210.08 points from the previous months close of 4,897.65 points. The PSEi registered a year-to-date increase of 16.8% as of end-March. Five of the six sector indices registered gains during the month, led by the Industrial sector which rose by 7.9% month-on-month. The Holding Firms, Financials, Property and Mining and Oil sectors followed, increasing by 7.3%, 7.2%, 3.0%, and 1.6%, respectively. The Services index, on the other hand, declined by 2.2% month-on-month. Meanwhile, the broader All Shares index grew by 4.6% or 152.37 points to end the month at 3,458.73 points from 3,306.36 points a month ago. Value turnover in March decreased by 8.6% to P170.21 billion from P186.33 billion in the previous month. Average daily turnover in March likewise declined by 12.8% to P7.74 billion from P8.87 billion a month ago. Value turnover for the first quarter of the year expanded by 54.5% to P502.08 billion from P325.02 billion in the same quarter last year. Foreign investors in March were net sellers in the amount of P3.23 billion, a reversal from last months net buying figure of P6.75 billion. Year -to-date, foreign investors during the first quarter were net buyers at P19.49, a turnaround from the P4.94 billion net foreign selling in the same period last year. Foreign trades cornered 39.7% of the total market trades during the three-month period.
