1. Pigment paste preparation

Based on the polymeric dispersing agents EDAPLAN 470 / 472 and EDAPLAN 480 / 482
formulation examples for the preparation of aqueous resin- and solvent-free pigment pastes
were developed. Main objectives were highest stability of the pigment paste itself and stability
and compatibility after formulating into different coating systems.

The data on the following pages give starting points for pigment pastes which are at least stable
for 6 months. The pigment pastes gave best results when used in architectural coatings as well
as in high performance industrial systems.
For some pigments two formulations with two different dispersant levels are shown. The
"minimum" formulation gave very good results in less demanding architectural coatings with
respect to gloss, color strength and rub-out. The "maximum" dispersant treat level gave the best
pigment dispersion and very good results in critical high performance industrial coatings with
respect to gloss, low haze, high color strength and least specks.

2. Experimental

The ingredients are mixed at the ratios given on the following pages by a SCANDEX mixer using
glass beads as grinding aid. The pigment pastes were evaluated for stability and compatibility in
several architectural and industrial coating formulations after one day, one week and 6 months.

When formulating pigment pastes the use of an anti-settling additive like bentone or silica is
recommended to avoid settling on storage. Generally the addition of a highly effective
defoamer like AGITAN 731 is also recommended.
