READING WORKSHOP: Daily read-aloud to model fluency and good reading strategies and to teach comprehension Reading mini-lessons addressing strategies, skills, and tools Independent reading from self-selected books in various genres o Traditional, Fantasy/Science Fiction, Modern Realistic Fiction, Historical Fiction, Informational, Biography/Autobiography, Poetry Reading teacher/student conferences for individual instruction and assessment Group shares/book talks Book projects Author studies/letters Reading response letters Reading self evaluations and assessments

WRITING WORKSHOP: Writing mini-lesson addressing strategies, skills, and tools Independent writing from self-selected topics in various genres o Personal Narrative, Memoir, Persuasive, Poetry, Fantasy, Informative Writing teacher/student conferences for individual instruction and assessment Group shares Carrying pieces through the writing process to publication o Pre-writing, Drafting, Revision, Editing, Publication, Assessment Authors celebration Writing self evaluations and assessments
HOMEWORK: Published pieces of writing multiple times throughout the year
Student-Led Conferences will take place three times during the year. Students lead conferences with teachers and parents and present their portfolios for parents to preview. Portfolios for reading and writing will include Participation Records that are documented daily, including preparedness for class and compliance with classroom rules; surveys; reading logs/ records; writing records, self-evaluations; writing samples/projects; published writing; rubrics; etc.
Students will be expected to bring the following materials to class every day:
