Tappan Band Newsletter

Fall 2014
Welcome Everyone and Bowling!

Private Lessons

This is the fall newsletter for the Tappan Bands. Available at

http://www.aaps.k12.mi.us/tappan.music/home. Please
check the link off Tappans Music Department web site for
this and other tips soon. We have tentatively set our 5th Fall
Bowling Social for Sun., October 26th from 2-4p. @ BelMark Lanes. All band students are welcome to come, cost
$10, food and bowling. Last year was a big success! (105
students and ~12 adults attended!) More information will
come soon via students. RSVP by Wed. 10/22 please.

Private lessons are always helpful in the advancement of our

musicians with interest in and beyond middle school. Its
also fun but not required. We have a list of area teachers
who have contacted us with information. Just ask us for a
list.

Calendar Permission Slips Due

All 6, 7, and 8th grade band students will be given a

Tappan Band Calendar for the entire school year. We ask
that all students and families look over the dates and times
so we may have all band members in attendance and avoid
as many conflicts as possible. Thank you for signing and
sending back the acknowledgment and video release forms
quickly, by Wed. 10/22 for 20 credit points. In addition, the
Tappan Bands have instituted a percussion contract that
requires a signature by all percussionists and parents. This
will help with the upkeep of our school used percussion
equipment.

Do You Hear Music at Home?

You should now be hearing music at home on a regular

basis, 4-5 days a week. Practice Logs will be checked every
two weeks, signed by parent. One parent comment per
week is requested on a students practice session. Frequent
playing evaluations will be used to determine effective
practice sessions. This counts as 20% of their quarterly
grade in band.
*What to practice: See back of log for routine, spots to
make parent comments, and write down assignments. We
started October 6th with first turn in by Friday, 10/17!

*How much to practice: 20-30 minutes per day, five - seven

days a week. Adjustments can be made due to students
schedule.

Everyone Should Have a Name Tag?

All instruments and percussion stick bags need to have a

name tag attached to their case with their name, and
Tappan written on it. We have luggage tags for students
to use this year, to avoid mix-ups and help us return
misplaced instruments to their owners.!

!

Accessories
Students may need accessories at home such as reeds,
cleaning kits, a music stand, tuner, metronome, polishing
cloth, swabs, handheld recorder or computer to record
practice at home. Help your child find a well-lit area with
few distractions and a regular time slot in the day to play
their instrument. All brass players are asked to have an old
washcloth to catch their water instead of the floor.
