QUESTION 1
IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

WHAT ARE MAGAZINE CONVENTIONS?

Magazine conventions are the laws that magazines go by to make them successful.
Magazine conventions are what makes magazines iconic and recognisable for the
audience. For example, placing a headline on a double page spread or the
presentation of the main cover line and the main image on the front cover. By
using convention diagrams I am able to answer this question and able to make a
strong and indigenous outcome.

FRONT PAGE CONVENTIONS FOLLOWED

While producing my front page I used my conventions so
that there are relatable aspects between my front page
and successful magazines such as XXL' or 'VIBE. I noticed
that most hip-hop magazines had a large masthead usually
placed behind the subject, but not so much that the name
of the magazine is unrecognisable. I chose to reconstruct
this in my own front page. A convention which I believe I
didnt follow is how hip-hop magazines have a shocking
colour scheme such as red or darker colours. Giving my
magazine cover a grey/brown theme is something unique
which would separate my magazine from other successful
magazines.

FRONT PAGE CONVENTIONS FOLLOWED

Since conventions are valuable I decided to pour as much conventions into my
magazine as I could.
My main image is captured in a mid-shot camera take. Having the main image in
colour compliments the shade of grey In the background. Which makes the main
image look professional is the less saturated tone used so the colours would blend
in with the grey filled background. The main image has an informal costume which
most hip-hop magazines have. The subject is posing as if he is aware of his status
as an hip-hop artist. Lighting is absorbed throughout the face and other areas but
changing the contrast settings separates the light shades from the dark shades.
Cover-lines are another convention I used in the process of my magazine front
page. Each cover-line has different characteristics, one being the change in
typography.
A selling line is mighty crucial to a magazines front page! It can be seen as a
slogan for magazines. Since selling lines are important I decided to place in under
the masthead on the left hand side which reads 'discover the undiscovered'. Using
a font known as Bebas helps the selling line stick out and become seperatable
from the other fonts also used on the front page.
At the bottom of a front page is the traditional location to have a main cover-line.
Since this is the main cover-line it would need to be at larger scale than the other
cover-lines.

FRONT PAGE CONVENTIONS EITHER

DEVELOPED OR CHALLENGED
While most magazines have
I challenged other
magazine front covers
because not all
magazine covers
have
contests/competitions

A convention I challenge
was including quotes in the
main cover-line. Doing this i
was stragetic in the position
of the font.

barcodes on a larger scale

and normally overlapping
the main image, I did the
same. Having the barcode
overlap the main image
slightly is a disadvantage as
it covers part of the main
subjects hand

My magazine has coverlines based on nothing

but hip-hop whereas,
other magazines
mention other things
such as fashion and
sports etc.

CONTENTS PAGE CONVENTIONS

FOLLOWED

The conventions I followed for my contents page is having the

traditional large scale contents.

Another important convention for a contents page is the editors

note. The editors note is a brief subject which usually details the
thoughts of the editor for this particular magazine.

I chose to also include the website of my magazine, along with

advertisements for other social media platforms such as Twitter
and Instagram, these can be found at the bottom of the page.

I included regulars. A common thing to see in various magazines

with different genres.

Above regulars, I have placed the features of the magazine.

I have the traditional page number.

I've also included a review section which reveals more stories.

In order to keep the cover story neat I used columns to separate

various topics.

CONTENTS PAGE CONVENTIONS EITHER

DEVELOPED OR CHALLENGED

Most content pages have a large image of the main image. I

decided to have a-not-so-large image so that I have room to
place more photos.
I developed my personal subscribe and placed it at the
top of the.

Cover stories are not always in

columns like my contents page.
Sometimes they are in various
locations in the magazine.
My contents page challenges other
magazines because not all magazines
has a page number for the contents
page.
