How I followed codes and conventions
I follow codes and conventions by using a medium shot with a direct
mode of address as my main image to attract and keep the audiences
attention; also making it more personal. I kept a consistent colour
scheme of purple and green, the college colours so the audience can
learn to be familiar with it and to almost form a brand; it also ensures
that it isnt too chaotic and overwhelming on the cover, Vogue does the
same with grey and white. My masthead is right at the top of the cover;
just like Vogue, this is used to create branding for my magazine. I also
followed codes and conventions by putting my barcode and date right in
the bottom right which is the last place the reader will look. My main
cover line is the biggest with a further explanation underneath which
follows conventions. Following conventions I advertised a contest with a
circle puff to make it stand out from the background and to ensure that
people dont think its another cover line. I followed codes and
conventions by making the font of the cover lines the same throughout
all of the cover, but made is different to the font of the masthead. I also
put my tagline right at the top by the masthead.

I kept the same idea of a main image the same as my drawn draft. I also
kept the puff in the same area to fill in white space. The barcode was always
going to be in the corner as not to distract from the more important things
on the cover. I also kept the same main cover line and tagline of the
magazine. I kept the same colour scheme as my drawn drafts as its a
college magazine and the colours used are the Solihull Sixth Form colours so
this keeps it on brand and in genre.

How I challenged codes and conventions
I challenged codes and conventions by not placing my main
image right in the middle of the cover and putting it more on
the right side of the cover. This however works with my
magazine because if it was in the middle it wouldnt fit in
properly with my main cover line. My masthead doesnt cover
all of the top of the cover but only the left corner. I did this
instead of making it go across the whole page to fit in my
tagline on the top but to also cover up more white space and
its quite a long name and it wouldnt look as well put together
all in one line.

My actual cover is different to my drawn draft as the

photo I used is scaled up more than I planned. This
was done not to leave any blank spaces. My tagline
isnt as big as in my drawn drafts because it took up
too much space and it was still visible on the cover.

How I followed codes and conventions
I followed codes and conventions by keeping my contents
page in columns. This ensures that the page is organised
and easy to read. I also put my masthead onto my
contents page to keep the branding and I also keep with
the colour scheme of the front cover to give the audience
a sense of familiarity. Empire magazine does the same
thing. Next to my mast head I clearly stated that this is a
contents page as not to confuse the audience.

I kept the same approximate size and layout of my

college logo and contents I kept this because I felt it
was appropriate for my contents page. I also kept the
size of the images the same.

How I challenged codes and conventions
The main way I challenged codes and
conventions of a contents page is by adding
more than one image; these all still link into the
magazine just like empires. This works better
for my magazine because it shows that it
includes a variety of subjects.

The main difference between my drawn draft and my final

product is that I went from two columns onto three. This
allowed me to spread the information out more and gave me
more room to add extra things, like the social media accounts.
I also added three images instead of two and placed them
differently. This was done so that the writing is all in one place
and its not confusing to the reader.
