COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is the year of goals reached and high adventure! The purpose of this
course is to build on skills studied in English 9, improving the reading, writing,
speaking, and listening skills of the student and prepare him/her for future
coursework and life, in general. The class will consist of various individual,
small group and class projects.

Learning as a process is emphasized, rather than being product oriented.

Students must complete the steps leading up to the final product in order to
be successful.
The four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening will be
incorporated into each unit of study.
Students will be expected to build on and gain various communicationbased skills, including listening and speaking in both small and large
groups, an emphasis on effective group work is highlighted in Unit Two.
Students will study literature and apply it to their lives. They will read
silently and aloud, as well as critically evaluate reading from a full
range of literary forms through their writing. Students will also read
for enjoyment.
Some lecturing will be done at the beginning of every unit and careful
notes must be taken, however daily work will be a combination of
independent, cooperative, reading, discussions and writing.
PLAGIARISM
This is a national problem. Copying ideas and words from somebody else,
even on the Internet, is unethical. Plagiarism is the act of using someone
elses words or ideas as though they were ones own. A student who
plagiarizes takes the product of another persons mind (either deliberately or
accidentally) and presents it as his/her own work. At university and college,
the penalties range from being forced to drop a course to being expelled from
the institution. The following is the penalty for any plagiarism, without
proper documentation and citation of sources, is that a grade of zero
will be assigned, the office will be notified, and the students
parent/guardian will be contacted.
WRITING REQUIREMENT
All written work must be double spaced

All final drafts must be typed and MUST follow proper format
Font requirements for text are ONLY Times New Roman, Calibri,
Cambria, Ariel, Tahoma, or Bookman Old Style
Font size for text is BETWEEN 10 12 point
Font size for headings and titles is BETWEEN 10-12 point
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
Act Responsibly
Come to class prepared! There will be NO PASSES once the bell has
rung, with the exception of emergencies.
Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings.
Complete all assignments on time and to the best of your ability.
Students must speak with me prior to any school-related absence in
order to obtain any assignments or work.
Do not cheat!!
Be Respectful
Raise your hand to share ideas and ask questions.
Listen to the teacher or classmates when they are speaking.
Do not lose or deface classroom materials.
Watch your words! Profanity, racial slurs, derogatory comments,
and/or any other inappropriate language will not be tolerated.
DO NOT:
Horseplay, rough-house, run, climb on furniture, or partake in any other
distracting or disrespectful behavior.
Whine or complain!
Go into cabinets or behind my desk without permission.
Groomno brushing hair, putting on makeup, painting nails, etc.
Sleep. If you sleep, you will stand!
Both the student and parent/guardian must provide a signature in the space
provided. This shows me that the syllabus has been read and understood.
