LESSON TOPIC: Money Introduction to money

TIME: double lesson

AIM:
Count and order small collections of Australian coins and notes according to their value.
(ACMNA034).
LESSON OUTCOMES:

STUDENT ASSESSMENT:
Students will be assessed on their participation in class discussions and the work they
produce. As this is the first lesson on money the students will be assessed through their work
to see what prior knowledge they have. To see how ready they are to advance their
understanding.
SELF ASSESSMENT:

Were the students engaged? What would I do differently next time? Was
there something else students needed to assist them? Could the activity
be changed? What worked well? Was the lesson pitched at the correct
level of challenge?

1 INTRODUCTION (whole class)

Each pair will be given a set of coins to look at and feel
etc. they will discuss the coins. The teacher will then ask
the students what they found and ask them to describe

What colour? What shape is it?
The teacher will show the students the different coins and
ask them if they know how much each one is worth. Does
anyone know how to draw the dollar sign? How do we
write an amount of money?
The students will then give back their coins to the teacher.
The class will then play the What Coin Am I? game. The
teacher has a box either her or a student will pick out a
coin and describe what it feels like and looks like. The
class will have to guess what coin it is.
The class will have a discussion about putting the coins
into order from lowest value to highest value. NOT SIZES.

3 EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
Students will then have to go back to their desks and cut
out the coins to stick them in value order and label them

5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, $2. Then they can do the same with desks
the notes $5, $10, $20, $50, $100.
For those students who finish early they can write down all
the facts they learnt or know about money and show me
anything else they can do with money.
CONCLUSION (whole class share/reflect)
Students will be asked to complete a two stars and a wish Students at their
at the bottom of their work. 2 stars = two things you learnt desks or on the floor
or did well. A wish = one thing you still want to know or
dont understand.
Students will bring their books down to the floor or stay at
their desks to show their work and discuss their findings.
Students will also have an opportunity to discuss their wish
and ask any questions. The teacher may also show a you
tube clip to consolidate the learning.
