    Grade 5

    Social Studies Immigration Project

    Due: Monday, April 19, 2010

    Students are to research one of their own cultural heritages, or alternatively a culture that
    interests them. For example, Belgium. Check with Mr. Clarke before proceeding.

    Research should be organized along these lines:

    1. Show the national flag, pictures of traditional dress, or traditional foods.

    2. What form of government does that country have? Who is the leader? What
    challenges does the country face nowadays?

    3. Give an overview of the important dates in that country’s history. Major wars?
    ruled by another country? separation? independence?

    5.. What are that country’s major exports, what are its natural resources, who are its
    biggest trading partners?

    6. What is that country’s population? Is it growing or getting smaller? Is


    immigration important to that country?

    7. When did most of the people in this group (or country) come to Canada?

    8. Why did they come?

    9. Where in Canada did most of them settle?

    10. What are two or three traditions or ceremonies belonging to this group?

    11. What contributions have they made to Canadian society?

    12, If this culture is part of your heritage, explain the family connection.

    The project will have two parts to it: an oral presentation to the class, and written
    research.

    The short oral presentation to the class should be approximately 3-5 minutes long. This
    presentation should include a visual display (a free-standing three-panel display), with
    mostly pictures or graphic elements, and little writing apart from the title, captions, etc.

    The written research should be neatly typed, and should be physically separate from the
    display or poster.

    This project will be in conjunction with Brooksbank’s Heritage Fair, set for Wednesday
    28 April from 6:30-8:00 pm in the gym. Students who do an exceptional job may be
    eligible to participate in the Sea to Sky Regional Heritage Fair sponsored by the North
    Vancouver Museum & Archives to be held May 1st, 2010.

    Due dates:

    Friday 9 April Rough draft of paragraphs

    Wednesday 14 April Good copy of written research

    Monday 19 April Heritage project presentations (visual


    display and oral presentations) throughout
    that week, in-class.

    Wednesday 28 April 6:30 – 8:00 pm Brooksbank’s Intermediate Heritage Fair.

    May 1, 2010 District-wide Heritage Fair by invitation
