(Operators on Inner Products spaces)

(1) Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization

Consider the vector space P3 of polynomials with rational coefficients Rthat are of de1
gree less than or equal to 3 on the domain [1, 1]. Check that hf | gi = 1 f (x)g(x)dx
is an inner product on P3 . The monomials {1, x, x2 , x3 } form a basis of P3 . Use the
Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process to produce an ONB of P3 . Express the
polynomial x3 + 3x2 + 2x + 3 as a linear combination of the ONB vectors.

(3) Reflections
Let u be a unit vector in a finite dimentional vector space V over C show that the
operator R = 2uu 1I is a reflection about u.
(4) Rotations in R3

Perform a two rotations to get the vector v =

find an orthogonal matrix Q such that Qv = e1

(5) Hermitian operators
Show that if A is a Hermitian operator on a finite dimensional space V then B =
1I + iA is invertible.
(6) Unitary operators
Show that if A is a Hermitian operator then
U = (1I iA)(1I + iA)1
is Unitary.
(7) Show that an operator that permutes an ordered basis is a Unitary transformation.
