(Group Isomorphism)

(1) Show that Z9 is isomorphic to Z6 .

(2) Explain why Z20 is not isomorphic to Z8 .
(3) Show that if : G H is an isomorphism then G is abelian iff H is abelian.
(4) Show that if : G H is an isomporphism then |x| = |(x)|, x G.
(5) An isomorphism of a group onto itself is called an automorphism. Let G be a group
and let g be an element of G. Show that the mapping x 7 gxg 1 is an automorphism
of G.
(6) Let G be a group. Show that the mapping x 7 x1 is an automorphism G iff G is
abelian.
(7) Let G be a group and H and K be subgroups of G such that i)H and K have only
the identity element in common.ii) HK = G. iii) Every element of H commutes with
every element of K. Show that G is isomorphic to H K.
(8) Show that if G is a group of order 4 that is not cyclic then it is isomporphic to Z2 Z2 .
(9) Show that if D12 is isomorphic to D6 Z2 .
(10) Show that if G H is cyclic then G and H are also cyclic.
