"Make-up" mirrors are made using a concave mirror which enlarges the face and
emphasizes any unwanted blemishes for the user's discretion. The distortion of images in
these images also varies with the distance between the mirror and its image. The group
of light rays from the mirror are reflected back to a single point (focal point).
Optics in physics is the science of light. The subject of optics is a very broad subject,
ranging from the color spectrum, to mirrors, to lasers. Optics, however, focuses mainly
on the important and familiar visible spectrum, the colors of the rainbow, with the
wavelengths ranging near 400nm (purple) to near 700nm (red). For today, we will be
focused on geometric optics, which focuses on the reflection, refraction, and actions of
light rays.
"Concave mirror": the light rays will appear to come from in from of the mirror, the
reflection will be nearer to you, and reflections will appear bigger than they really are.
"Convex mirror": light rays seem to come from behind the mirror and reflections will
appear smaller and further away than they would in a plane mirror.
If you are in the wilderness and you want to start a fire by reflecting sunlight off of a
mirror, what shape should the mirror be, and why?
In order to start a fire by reflecting sunlight off of a mirror, the shape of the mirror should
be concave. This is because light rays are centered at the focal point of the concave
mirror at a perpendicular angle. The photons in the light rays are travelling at high speeds
and this speed, or the momentum, creates friction as these light rays increase. This
friction generates heat and therefore by reflecting this heat allows someone to start a fire.
