Jacques Cartier was searching for a western passage to Asia when he discovered what is now Canada. Samuel de Champlain established the first trading post in Quebec City in 1608, trading goods like fur pelts. There were only about 100 French settlers in New France by 1627. The relationship between the French settlers and native peoples was generally friendly, as the natives helped the French survive by teaching them local farming, hunting, and building techniques. The largest towns in New France were Quebec City and Montreal. Women had more rights and opportunities in New France compared to France at the time. The settlers likely would not have survived without help from the native peoples, who taught them important skills for surviving the local environment and climate
