    Why does a toy car come to a stop after being pushed? Why is it harder to push heavier objects? The answers to these questions lie in the three laws of motion invented by Isaac Newton.

    The First Law Of Motion!


    Newtons first law of motion also called the law of inertia, states that an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues to be in motion with the same speed and the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. This means that objects keep on doing what they are doing unless some kind of force stops the object. For example a car will not stop if nothing is in front of it or if an external force, such as the breaks, is applied on it. The second law of motion helps in understanding Newtons idea better.

    The Second Law Of Motion!


    What does acceleration mean and how does it affect motion? Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass. The greater the mass (of the object being accelerated) the greater the amount of force needed (to accelerate the object).This means that if an object has more mass the object needs more force to accelerate. The formula for the second law of motion is force = mass x acceleration(F=M x A). Its easy to understand acceleration and its relationship to force by thinking about the amount of force needed to push a small table and the amount of force needed to push a rocket to space. As the rocket has more mass it will require a lot more force than the table to move it. This example will also help us to understand the third law of motion.

    The Third Law Of Motion!


    According to this law for every action there is an equal and opposite re-action. This means that if you push an object it pushes back equally. For example the heat energy exerted by a rockets boosters shoots the rocket of the ground and up into the space. The action is the fire pushing and the re-action is the rocket moving upward.

    The three laws of motion have contributed a lot toward understanding why things move and act the way they do. Force, mass and gravity all have their roles to play in the laws, which makes motion, speed, and acceleration possible.
