The Student Village, West The initial idea of building the Student Village was put forward in 1959, and the construction work began in 1969. The Student Village was a shared project by different Students Unions. At that time it was a spectacular construction project. The Student Villages architecture is designed by Jan Sderlund and Erkki Valovirta.The bright building colours are designed by Howard Smith. In the planning of the Student Village has emphasized not only communal thinking which was characteristics in the 60s but also affordable quality living. The housing complex was completed in 1979 and all apartments have since then been renovated during the years 1994 2003. Indivdual apartments have been renovated when needed. The Student Village consists of eastern and western sides, of which the eastern side near Halistenkoski rapids was the last to be completed. The Student Village offers many housing alternatives ranging from single-room apartments to shared apartments as well as from two-room flats to large 90m2 family apartments with saunas. Various plantings and grasslands as well as the versatile recreational possibilities contribute to its attractiveness. Outdoor corridors as well as bridges between the houses are characteristic to the Student Village. The Student Village is the largest single student housing complex in Finland with a colourful history.

There are connections for a washing machine in all other apartments, except in the rooms with common kitchen, because there is no space for the washing machine there. In the Student Village area there are many laundries for tenants use. All apartments have a direct Internet access to Kylverkko network. All you need is a cable and the connection is ready to use. All apartments have cable TV, so the digital adapter has to be suitable for cable network. You can check more detailed information about individual apartments from the Housing Office/the Real Estate Department.
Laundries
In the Student Village area there are four laundries, two in the western side and two in the eastern side. Laundry rooms on the western side are situated on the top floor in building 1B and on the basement floor of the TYS Housing Office, entrance through the backyard. Laundry rooms on the eastern side are situated on the basement floor of the building 30B and on the top floor of the building 74B. In the laundries located in the office building and in the building 30B you can also find washing machines for carpets. Laundry reservations are made through an internet booking system, the link is on TYSs website. You can get into the laundries with a door code, that can be acquired from the Housing Office. To the laundry located in the building 1B tenants of the western side of the Student Village can access with their key. The laundry payment is by phone call; the use of drum-dryers is free. The Student Village, East Tenants can use free sauna turns called lenkkisauna (sauna turns for joggers) or book private sauna turns through the sauna reservation calendar on TYSs website. You can find a list of lenkkisauna turns on TYSs website.
Storage
Apartments in the Student Village do not have their own storerooms. Storage areas can be found in different locations around the Student Village, to the closest storage room a tenant can get in with his/hers own keys. For using the storage space tenants have to sign a storage contract in the Housing Office. Tenants can ask more detailed information about this from the Housing Office.
Saunas
There are seven saunas on the western side of the Student Village, situated in buildings 2B, 3D, 4D, 5D, 6D, 8B and 10A. In the eastern side of the Student Village there are 14 saunas, situated in buildings 20B, 25B, 30B and 74B.
Parking
A parking space with a heating post is possible to rent from the Housing Office. On the west side there arent as many parking places as requested but on the east side the situation is much better. Parking spaces without heating posts can be used freely by all residents. There are many cyclists in the Student Village around the year. You can find plenty of spaces for bikes close the buildings as well as lockable bike storages concentrated in the yards (see the area map). Tenants can access these storages with their keys.
the campus area. The riverside with its beautiful surroundings offer good routes for joggers. The beautiful Virnamki outdoor area in Halinen is likewise located nearby. There are two Tenant Committees in the Student Village, one in the western side and one in the eastern side. Tenant Committees organize different events and by participating you can meet your neighbours and influence to your housing areas ambience. More information from TYSs website.
Transportation
Bus connections from the Student Village are excellent: busses no. 50, 51, 53 and 54 go through the Student Village and past the universities to the city centre with around 15-minute intervals. More busses leave from the Spa Hotel Caribia or from Hmeentie to the city centre. Night bus no. 36 also goes through the Student Village.
