Ashley Gilbank, with her husband & pooch following in a van, dipped her roller blade in the Atlantic Ocean in St. Johns Newfoundland in June & will do the same in the Pacific in Victoria later next week. By that time, shell have put on 10,000km roller blading to raise awareness for youth mental health & fundraising for research to help lower the rate of teen suicide. Ashley says shes learned alot on the road such as: mental health is not a draw for donations or media exposure as is, say, cancer. Her goal at the outset was $60,000, but by Saturday, with only $6,324 raised, shes now looking for $10,000. And shes hoping its just the start of the conversation. Ashley was drawn into the cause after a close friend committed suicide. She says shes found that youth mental illness & suicide is one of the last taboos and Canadians arent really talking about it. The youth suicide rate in Canada is the 3rd highest in the industrialized world. And only 1 out of every 5 youth who need help will actually receive it. General population studies have shown that the first symptoms and onset of major mental health disorders develop in adolescence & early adulthood, but individuals in this age group are the least likely to access mental health services (Patton et al., 2007; Statistics Canada, 2003). Two commercial semi tractor trailers one carrying lime & the other lumber collided head on at about 7:30pm on Saturday, on Highway 5A near the Stump Lake rest stop, 45km north of town. Both trucks were fully englufed in flames on impact. The body of one driver was retrieved shortly after the crash, but the fire prevented investigators from getting into the other truck cab. The accident also sparked a grass fire that quickly grew to 20 hectares. However crews were able to put the blaze out. One driver is identified as Gary Joseph Miller, aged 59, of Kamloops. The other drivers name has not been released. The collision is under investigation by Central Interior Traffic Services (CITS Merritt) & the BC Coroner Service.

Today, Donna Barnett, the Chair of the BC Government Rural Caucus will be in Merritt to meet with local community representatives and hear from them about how the BC government can improve the lives of rural British Columbians. The consultation takes place at city hall, starting at 12:45pm. Barnett will hear ideas from Merritt city council along with listening to other community representatives and individuals. The work of Rural Caucus has helped influence decisions the provincial government has made on programs and policies including: reviewing the municipal taxation formula; the launch of a comprehensive review of the carbon tax; expanding high-speed internet access and cellular services; amending the Nurse Practitioners Statues Act to allowing nurse practitioners to participate more fully in the health care system; and increased funding for rural and remote schools and small school districts.
