Yayasan Kelab-Kelab Rotary Malaysia adopts the REF

Saturday 6th October 2012 saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise (RCBKS) and Yayasan Kelab-Kelab Rotary Malaysia (Yayasan) or the Rotary Foundation of Malaysia. The MoU is for RCBKS and Yayasan to co-operate on a community service initiative in Malaysia. This initiative to help Rotary clubs start their own Rotary Education Fund (REF) is known as the Rotary Education Award (REA) programme. Clubs will be encouraged to set up and run their own individual REF to administer their own Education Assistance Awards (EAA). An REF Education Assistance Award helps bright 15-19 year old students from lower income families to complete their high school education so that they can undertake further studies in higher education. The Education Assistance Award is a holistic programme providing not only financial assistance but assisting in the character building of the students. There are four elements to the Award programme: - Financial assistance - Mentoring by Rotarians or Volunteers - Leadership training - Values education The Award programme was developed by RCBKS with the assistance of the Behavioural Science School at Help University and professional trainers EQ Training and Development, and is in its fourth successful year of implementation. RCBKS will provide advisory support to Yayasan in this initiative. With the signing of this MoU, Yayasan and RCBKS hope that other Rotary clubs in Malaysia will be able to implement a similar programme with the help and guidance of the two organisations. The initiative will begin as a Pilot with 5-6 clubs to emulate RCBKSs model of the REF. It is envisaged that the implementation of this programme by clubs will provide a meaningful long term project for clubs and position Rotary Malaysia as a leader in education assistance. Vocational Award Presentation

Club Vocational Director Poay Lim announced the recipients of the RCBKS Vocational Awards on Saturday morning as being Paun Siti Krishnan and Kanagarajan A/L Pandiyan from Pulau Carey Scool, Pulau Carey Island, Selangor. Unfortunately Paun Sita was unable to attend the event due to work commitments however, Kana came along with all the family to enjoy the morning. During the citation Mike referred to the success of Kana's daughter at the Values Camp earlier in the year and reflected that having something to say and being prepared to say it in someone so young is a testament to their parents and their upbringing.

This dedication to his family reflects in Mr. Kanas other activities such as running free classes for children on Pulau Carey for 10 years, being involved in motivational camps in preparation for the UPSR exams, and showing commitment to the children under his charge in his day to day work. Kana has shown a strong affiliation to the REF in a short period of time and we hope this will continue in to the future. Congratulations!
