RESOLUTION
To fix errors that occur when you use Windows Update, install and run the System Update Readiness Tool. The tool scans for inconsistencies on your computer and fixes them as it's being installed. Important Although it typically takes less than 15 minutes to run the scan, it might take much longer on some computers. Even if the progress bar seems to stop, the scan is still running, so don't cancel the process. You can use the System Update Readiness Tool on computers that are running Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Vista. To run the System Update Readiness Tool, follow the steps that correspond with your version of Windows:
For Windows 8
1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.) 2. Type command prompt in the search box. 3. In the list of results, swipe down on or right-click Command Prompt, and then tap or click Run as administrator. 4. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands exactly as they appear. Press the Enter key after each command: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth 5. To close the Administrator: Command prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter. 6. Run Windows Update again.
For Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2
Use one of the following methods to download and install the System Update Readiness Tool. If you choose Method 1, but an error occurs while you run Windows Update, try Method 2 instead.

The following table lists the Windows Update installation errors that may be fixed by the System Update Readiness Tool. However, the tool may be unable to fix every instance of these errors. Code Error Description The system cannot find the file specified. The data is invalid. The source for the package or file not found. The component store is in an inconsistent state. A component's file does not match the verification information present in the component manifest. Unable to parse the requested XML data. An invalid character was encountered. An identity string is malformed. The name of an attribute in an identity is not within the valid range. The value of an attribute in an identity is not within the valid range. The parameter is incorrect. No signature was present in the subject. An error occurred while Windows Update reads or writes to a file. A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the current system clock or the time stamp in the signed file.
