Local Bridge Replacement Program

MnDOTs Office of State Aid creates a 5-year Master Local Bridge

Replacement Priority List, which is the compilation of county, city, and
township bridge priorities supported by board resolutions. To be eligible for
a grant from the State Transportation Fund (Bridge Bonds), the bridge has
to be located on a county state aid highway (CSAH), municipal state aid
highway (MSAS), county road, city, street, or township road, and must be
owned by the county, city, or township. Bridges on the trunk highway are
not eligible for this funding.
Local Bridges Planned for Replacement in 2013 and 2014
At this time, the number of local bridges identified for replacement on the
master bridge replacement priority list utilizing all funding sources for 2013
totals 557 bridges with an estimated total replacement cost of $206 M. The
total number of bridges identified for 2014 is an additional 149 bridges with
an estimated replacement cost of an additional $74 M. The total bond funds
identified for these bridge replacement projects totals $102 M.
Summary of Local Bridge Replacement Program for 2012
Legislature appropriated $33 M of Local Bridge Bond Funds in 2011
Legislature appropriated $30 M of Local Bridge Bond Funds in 2012
262 local bridges were funded in 2012 totaling $96.8 million with a
combination of federal, state aid, Town Bridge, local and state bridge bond
funds.
Bond funds accounted for $44.7 M of the total replacement cost leveraging
$6.5 M of federal, $24.8 M of state aid, $14.8 M of Town Bridge, and $5.9 M
of local funds.
$33 M of bridge bond funds currently available will offset the $102 M
identified for 2013 and 2014. Additional bridge bonds requested for this
bonding session is $102 - $33 = $69M. This amount will meet the need and
priorities identified by local resolutions.
Attached is a list of some of major local bridge replacement projects
(Greater than $1M) identified for replacement in 2013 and 2014.
