Discrepant Event Write-Up Format
Often in the beginning of each topic, you will either observe a live demonstration of a discrepant event or watch a video recording of one or be given a description of one. During the demonstration or viewing, you will be asked to record as accurately as possible all the observations. After sufficient materials have been covered, you will be challenged to submit an analysis and scientific explanation for it. To be able to provide adequate explanation, you MUST record detailed observations. It goes without saying then that when the discrepant event is being demonstrated you must concentrate and observe carefully. You will have from a few days to about a week to struggle with the solution during which time you can talk with your parents and other folks, research as necessary. Submit your discrepant event write-up in the format shown on the back of this sheet on the due date. Some times you may have to complete the write-up during a lesson. All discrepant events will test your ability to apply your knowledge of science to explain real phenomenon, they will test your ability to think critically, the very attribute we expect of scientists. The problems will often be of a chemical nature, but not always. These write-ups will be assessed using the Criterion B Communication rubric below.

Your Name Mr. Gurung Chemistry M__? Date The Discrepant Event Title The Problem: In passive voice, describe the relevant observations as completely as you are able and restate the challenge in your own words, or describe the discrepant event and the problem in your own words. The Solution: In proper paragraph format, DOUBLED SPACED, analyze the discrepant event using relevant concepts or ideas or principles and/or theories. Next, using your knowledge of Chemistry (or Science) and the language and symbols of Chemistry (or Science), explain the discrepant event as completely as possible making logical deductions / inferences from your observations. If you received help from someone else or some other source, site it at the bottom. You do not need to site sources for general chemistry or Science concepts or symbols covered in the class.
The write-up must be typed Heading must be complete You must bold and underline the words The Problem and The Solution and use them in your write up as headers just as I have done above. Write-up in the wrong format will be returned to the student without grading.
