KIWI INGENUITY GIVES RISE TO YOGURT MAKER

EXTRACT FROM NORTH SHORE TIMES: FEBRUARY 1993

At No 30 in a Belmont suburban street, Yogurt Maker inventor Len Light and entrepreneur Kathy have been busy. Len began experimenting with yogurt 7 years ago. Only now is the tinkering starting to pay off with the mass production of EasiYo, a polypropylene flask for making yogurt at home. 12 years ago, Len met Kathy and they married. She was a business woman with a strong entrepreneurial streak, having had 6 businesses of her own. As if life was not busy enough, Len and Kathy had triplet girls (21), and a house-full of boys; Arthur (9), Peter (8), Richard (7), John (2) and David (1). Lens experiments were driven by his desire to find a cheaper way of producing bulk yogurt for his family without buying it from the supermarket. After some time he came up with the EasiYo Yogurt Maker a deceptively simple system for making delicious, inexpensive yogurt without fear of failure.

LEN THE INVENTOR

EXTRACT FROM THE NORTH SHORE TIMES: FEBRUARY 1993

Inventions were nothing new to Len, who once taught Maths and Physics at Westlake Boys High School. He patented his first design many years ago a machine to be towed behind a tractor, microwaving grass grubs on North Island farmland.

THE TASTE
We never set out to be clever says Kathy, We just wanted to make yogurt in a foolproof way. It just turned out to taste exceptionally good.

Easy Yogurt!
THE EASIYO LAUNCH AUCKLAND SEPT 1992

Achieving
THE VISION

GREATNESS
EXTRACT FROM LITTLE TREASURES MAGAZINE: FEBRUARY 1993

This remarkable family business grew from adventure, invention, love and the good old desire to keep the kids happy and healthy

As many kiwi blokes do when they put their thinking caps on, Len headed to the basement garage of their Belmont home. From here he invented the Yogurt Maker.

With homeshows in New Zealand proving to be a huge success, it was only 4 5 months from the launch of EasiYo before Len left his teaching job to focus on yogurt.

Kathy and Len started selling EasiYo through health shops and pharmacies across the country and six months later were approached by supermarkets wanting to stock the product. Within nine months EasiYo was on the shelves. EasiYo got too big for the basement garage and in 1993 the move was made to a factory in Glenfield. With an additional need for space, EasiYo moved into Parkhead Place, Albany in June 1995, then on to a bigger site at Cebel Place with 14 staff in November 1999. January 2010 saw EasiYo move to John Glenn Avenue, Albany. A 1700m2 plant with the capability to run 4 x production lines and store 1,000 pallets.

The move to Australia was a natural progression says Kathy. So many New Zealanders were going to Australia to live and take their Yogurt Makers with them. They wanted to know where they could get their EasiYo products.

I went on a holiday to New Zealand and stayed at a Bed & Breakfast where the lady gave us yogurt and fruit. It was so nice I asked her the brand and she told me she made it herself in your EasiYo Yogurt Maker. So I went and bought one! Since then Ive introduced it to my friends, and they love it also.

EasiYo is also great to have on hand to use for sour cream or cream cheese just a short strain, and off you go!

WESTLAND, HOKITIKA CONNECTS WITH EASIYO, AUCKLAND 2007
The West Coast is renowned for glaciers and rain forests and is home to Westland Milk Products which produces approximately 500 million dollars worth of dairy products each year and employs over 300 people.

From Northland to...

Most people remember Hokitka for greenstone, gold mining and perhaps the annual Wild Foods Festival. But the economic backbone to the township is Westland Milk Products. It backs on to the Hokitika River and forested snowstriped alps rise above.

Westland Milk Products sought expansion into the nutritional space by acquiring 100% of EasiYo Products Ltd in late 2009. With its unique value-added consumer products, branding and innovative Intellectual Property, EasiYo was a prime aquisition for Westland Milk Products to immediately gain international exposure in the FMCG category.
