I found a wonderful ar cle recently wri en by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, and I thought Id share it with you. It is an extract from a longer address which he gave to the Synod of Bishops in Rome in early 2013 at the request of Pope Emeritus Benedict. Personally, I believe that he is spot on I hope youll enjoy reading it. Have a wonderful week ahead.

Contempla on is the key to prayer, liturgy, art, ethics anda renewed humanity that is capable of seeing the world with freedom. Contempla on is very far from being just one kind of thing that Chris ans do; it is the key to prayer, liturgy, art and ethics, the key to the essence of a renewed humanity that is capable of seeing the world and other subjects in the world with freedom freedom from self-oriented, acquisi ve habits and the distorted understanding that comes from them. To put it boldly, contempla on is the only ul mate answer to the unreal and insane world that our nancial systems and our adver sing culture and our chao c and unexamined emo ons encourage us to inhabit. To learn contemplave prac ce is to learn what we need so as to live truthfully and honestly and lovingly. It is a deeply revolu onary ma er.What the Gospel requires of us means a transforming of our whole self, our feelings and thoughts and imaginings. To be converted to the faith does not mean simply acquiring a new set of beliefs, but becoming a new person, a person in communion with God and others through Jesus Christ. The contempla ve habit strips away an unthinking superiority towards other bap zed believers and the assump on that I have nothing to learn from them insofar as the habit of contempla on helps us to approach all experience as gi , we shall always be asking what is it that the brother or sister has to share with us even the brother or sister who is one way or another separated from us or from what we suppose to be the fullness of communion. Wherever ini a ves are being taken to reach out in new ways to a lapsed Chris an or postChris an public there should be serious work done on how such outreach can be grounded in some ecumenically shred contempla ve prac ce. What people of all ages recognize is the possibility, quite simply of living more humanly living with less

fran c acquisi veness, living with space for s llness, living in the expecta on of learning, and most of all, living with an awareness that there is a solid and durable joy to be discovered in the disciplines of self forge ulness that is quite dierent from the gra ca on of this or that impulse of the moment. Unless our evangelizaon can open the door to all this, it will run the risk of trying to sustain faith on the basis of an un-transformed set of human habits-with the all too familiar result that the Church comes to look unhappily like so many purely human ins tu ons, anxious, busy, compe ve and controlling. In a very important sense, a true enterprise of evangeliza on will always be a re-evangeliza on of ourselves as Chris ans; also, a rediscovery of why our faith is dierent, transguring a recovery of our own new humanity.

Our very own Director of Worship has made his rst CD available for sale at the parish oce during the week. This project is tled: Mis Momentos con Dios, is his rst recording from a couple of years back. First Communion preparation may begin in the second grade; the preparation for the Sacrament is a two year process. A copy of the childs Baptism Certificate is required. You may register your child the following ways: Fill out forms located in the Parish Office. Print out forms from our website, and then mail them to the Parish Office with your payment. Paperless On Line Registration with Q-Pay at sanluisreyparish.org Tuition for each student is $55. Full payment of tuition is requested at the time of registration, if possible.

PRE-CONFIRMATION & CONFIRMATION

Eligibility: To enroll a student for Confirmation they must have been attending a Catholic Formation program or Catholic High School within the last two years and are at least 15 years of age by June 30, 2014. Any young person not eligible to enroll at this time is directed to enroll in the Pre-Confirmation program in order to be eligible for classes the following year. The fee for Pre-Confirmation is $55. The Registration fee for Confirmation is $150.00, which includes the cost of workshops and the Confirmation Retreat. Registration for all programs closes on September 8th. Please organize your calendar to not miss the window of registration if you would like your child to be enrolled in our program. Registration for returning students is already open. The Old Mission San Luis Rey will begin docent led behind the scenes tours of the Old Mission every Saturday morning at 10am beginning August 3. LAS INSCRIPCIONES PARA FORMACIN DE FE TERMINAN EL 8 DE SEPTIEMBRE

Para inscribir a sus hijos en el Programa de Formacin de Fe (Catecismo) necesitan estar inscritos como miembros de la parroquia, si an no estn inscritos en la parroquia, pueden hacerlo en la ocina parroquial o por internet antes de inscribir a sus hijos en el Programa de Formacin de Fe. PRE-KINDER A 8 GRADO La preparacin para la Primera Comunin empieza en el segundo grado escolar; la preparacin para el Sacramento es de dos aos. Se requiere una copia del Cer cado de Bau smo del nio/a. Pueden inscribir a sus hijos de la siguiente manera: Completando la forma de inscripcin localizada en la Ocina Parroquial. Imprimiendo la forma de nuestro si o de web, y envindola por correo junto con su pago a la Ocina Parroquial. Completando la Inscripcin en lnea (internet) y hacer su pago por Q-pay en: sanluisreyparish.org La matrcula por cada estudiante es de $55. Se requiere el pago completo en el momento de la inscripcin, si es posible. PRE-CONFIRMACIN Y CONFIRMACIN Elegibilidad: Para inscribir a un estudiante para Conrmacin ellos deben de haber asis do a un programa de Formacin de Fe o a una Preparatoria Catlica dentro de los l mos dos aos y que tengan haya cumplido 15 aos de edad para el 30 de junio del 2013. Cualquier joven que no sea elegible para inscribirse en este momento es dirigido a inscribirse en el Programa de Pre-Conrmacin con el n de ser elegible para la clase de Conrmacin el prximo ao. El costo para Pre-Conrmacin es de $55. El Costo de la inscripcin para Conrmacin es de $150 e incluye los talleres y el Re ro de Conrmacin. Siendo as, los sacramentos NO enen validez y son ilcitos (no permi dos). Nuestro Obispo Roberto Brom ha sido muy claro de que stos Sacramentos sean administrados SOLAMENTE dentro de las Parroquias.

First Friday Devotion

Devocin del Primer Viernes

The Promise of Gods Unconditional Love and Infinite Generosity

The church has always encouraged authentic and balanced forms of devotion that will help the faithful to deepen their appreciation of the Eucharist. The First Friday devotion is dedicated to the most Sacred Heart of Jesus and is associated with St. Mary Margaret Alacoque who was given the gift of an intense grace filled prayer life. In her mystical insights (visions) she was given messages to fight the heresy of Jansenism that drove people way from God. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus emphasizes the mercy and love of God and encourages believers to frequently receive communion. Through receiving the sacrament, people will come to experience and know the unconditional love of God. On First Fridays, Friday, June 7, (Friday in honor of Good Friday), parishioners gather after the Daily Mass and spend from 8:00-10:00 a.m. in Eucharistic Adoration. People pray for themselves and the church to always practice and experience the mystery of receiving communion and participating in the sacramental encounter with Jesus. Please join the members of our parish in this very important part of the churchs devotional life.

La Promesa del Amor Incondicional de Dios e Infinita Generosidad

La Iglesia siempre ha fomentado formas autnticas y equilibradas de devocin que ayudar a los fieles a profundizar su aprecio de la Eucarista. La devocin del Primer Viernes es dedicada al Sagrado Corazn de Jess y se asocia con St. Maria Margarita de Alacoque que recibi el regalo de una vida de oracin intensa y llena de gracia. Sus revelaciones msticas (visiones) le dieron mensajes para luchar contra la hereja de Jansenismo que condujo a que la gente se alejar de Dios. La devocin al Sagrado Corazn de Jess enfatiza la misericordia y el amor de Dios y alienta a los creyentes a comulgar con frecuencia. A travs de recibir el Sacramento, la gente experimentar y conocer el amor incondicional de Dios. El Primer Viernes, viernes, 7 de junio, (viernes en honor del Viernes Santo), los feligreses se reunirn despus de la Misa diaria de 8:00-10:00 a.m. en Adoracin Eucarstica. Las personas rezan por ellas mismas y por la Iglesia para que siempre practique y experimente el misterio de recibir la comunin y de participar en el encuentro sacramental con Jess.
