MY FAVOURITE ROOM
I still remember the room where I spent a lot of beautiful days. It was in a tall block of flats. That room had a big window and a big balcony in front. We could see the sea from there. I talked long hours with my best friend there till late at night, and in that room my brothers and I played together. We had a lot of fun there during our childhood. There was a small sofa that was my grandmother's favourite. She liked to sit there for hours. We often watched TV there. In winter, we sometimes sat in front of the fire and listened to our favourite songs. My favourite things in the room were our TV and especially our stereo because I love to listen to music.
10
15
We also had lots of books on the bookshelves. I liked to collect shells, so I had plenty of them too. There were also beautiful paintings on the walls. Writing about that room takes me back to those beautiful days. When I close my eyes I still remember those days; I hear the voices of all the members of my family when we were all together in that room. Now I live in a new house but I still miss that room. DORA MURPHY
Dora Murphy lives in Long Beach, which is far from the centre of Los Angeles, on the coast. She is thirteen years old. Victoria Smith asks the questions. Tell us about your family, Dora. There are four people in my family, including me. I have a brother whos eleven years old and is in the 6th grade. My mother is a housewife and my father is a taxi driver. What is Long Beach like? Its a really nice place to live. Its got a beach and there are lots of things to do amusement parks, theatres and shopping centres. When the weather is fine, I go to the beach with my friends. In winter I go skiing in the mountains. In Long Beach there is a lot of fresh air and open space and I like it. Could you describe Los Angeles to us? We visit the city often. Its really very big. It has a lot of high buildings and there are lots of people, and Los Angeles is very dynamic, but I dont like the pollution. You can never see any stars there, because the air is so polluted. There is also a lot of noise and violence. We cant see any farms and people arent very friendly. Drugs are also a problem there. Los Angeles is the birthplace of Mickey Mouse and, on the coast, surfing. Lots of actors and actresses live in Hollywood, a district of Los Angeles. Club (abridged and adapted)
