In this maiden issue, we seize the opportunity to recap past projects in 2013, and we take a quick glance at our future endeavours. We are starting the year with many positive vibes as JCI Port-Louis has been at the forefront during the JCI day bagging eight awards. Dear Readers, It gives me great pleasure to convey, on this special occasion of the first publication in 2014 of our e-newsletter, my very warm and cordial greetings to All JCI Port Louis and Mauritius Members, Senators and Aspiring Members. It is said that the power of an organization lies in the level of passion and action of its people and it is clear that JCI Port Louis possess that power. Throughout the years, JCI Port Louis has demonstrated that it delivers what it promises and this year again we shall do so. As you are all aware that now on, all JCI Projects shall meet the UNITED NATIONS MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS. This year, we will keep our focus on: Eradicate Extreme Poverty & Hunger Achieve Universal Primary Education Environmental Sustainability : Reduce biodiversity loss By creating awareness for the public at large and proposing solutions through our actions. This year, our organization, JCI Port Louis will as always provide opportunity to young people to develop leadership skills, social responsibility, fellowship and entrepreneurship necessary to create positive changes in their communities. The years have brought us the experience we need. JCI Port Louis has contributed to the development of the country through projects pertaining to poverty alleviation and sustainable development amongst others. We are fully aware of the in-depth problems of our society and want to alleviate the distress of our fellow-citizens. What are we today and where we will stand tomorrow depends on actions and thoughts generated now for future action, reaction and outcomes. Moreover, my friends, this year is a very special one; we shall celebrate 30 years of existence. My wish as Local President for that very special year is that we build a successful JCI Port Louis family, always result oriented and that as at December this year, we may proudly say we did it, we brought opportunities and positive changes, and we impacted our world. JCI Mauritius National President Prashant Lallah

Dear JCI Port Louis members, senators and aspiring members, Greetings from your 2014 National President. I would like to first extend my sincerest appreciation to all the members of JCI Port Louis for giving me the opportunity to serve as National President. It is a great privilege and honor for me. As President I look forward to working with members of JCI Port Louis and members of other JCI Mauritius Chapters as well. This year JCI Port Louis is celebrating its 30th year of existence together with JCI Mauritius and JCI Curepipe. JCI Port Louis members should be proud of their Local Organisation. Over the past 30 years, JCI Port Louis has been in the limelight of various well known and breathtaking projects and events. I hope the current active members can keep the flag of JCI Port Louis flying high with the same motivation and determination that past leaders and members of JCI Port Louis have had. This year JCI Mauritius is focusing on 5 pillars: 1)Growth: It is important that each Local Organisation grows. Members are the most important asset of this organization and I am looking forward to seeing members make the difference in 2014 by impacting the community. 2)Training: The target for 2014 is that 100% of members declared have attended and graduated from the JCI Official courses which are JCI Admin, JCI Impact and JCI Achieve. It is important for members to follow these courses since JCI Achieve give members the opportunity to get to know and understand the mission, vision and values of the organization. JCI Impact is important to know how to implement the Active Citizens Framework to implement impactful projects. JCI Admin is run to show board members the best ways to run a local organization. 3)Active Citizens Framework: It has been some time now that JCI has recommended to use this framework to implement projects that create an impact in the society. I hope that Local Organisations will use this framework this year. 4)Administration and Finance: I strongly believe that to be able to run impactful projects, a Local Organisation should have a very solid foundation. The foundation becomes solid when a lot of importance is given to the administration of the organization. 5)Internationalism: I want members to realize the magnitude of this organization. This can only happen if members attend international conferences. Hence I am requesting members to make a special effort to attend at least 1 international JCI conference during their time as member of this fantastic organization. I am looking forward to serving you and working with you for the rest of the year. I count on your help and feedback. Let us learn together, laugh together and work together, confident that in the end we will triumph together in the right. Just like our past JCI Port Louis leaders have done over the last 30 years, let us continue to work and serve our community with a spirit of brotherhood and unity. National Day Celebration

In 2013, JCI Port Louis innovated in its celebration. To mark the 45th Independence Day, JCI Port Louis organised a National Day celebration gathering all the JCI members under the theme Mauritian culture, on Sunday 17 March at Centre de Flic en Flac. To keep the tradition align with the celebration, the day started with the flag raising ceremony, followed by the speech of the project director, local president and senate chairperson. The aim of this project was to celebrate our brotherhood, multicultural society and unity that prevail in the JCI family. Several activities such as quiz, hanging apple, potato race, tug of war and bottle filling kept the guests busy and in a festive mood. The most interesting part was the Mauritian culinary competition which was launched one week prior the celebration. The winner was awarded on the day. As our culture promotes sharing, almost all members present brought with them a typical Mauritian snack that added life to the prevailing festive mood. The celebration ended with an open dance floor.

Halloween - A scary Fundraising Night

JCI Port Louis was all set to be creative and novel. For its fundraising, JCI Port Louis decided to organise a Halloween party which was held at Teasers club, Flic en flac in the dreadful darkness of the 1st November 2013 night from 22h30 PM to 5.30 AM. The night was haunted with much pleasure by the Spooky Team where everyone revealed another personality in horrific amazing display of costumes disguise, some were unrecognizable, sharing fun, happiness among family members with treats and tricks and strange zombies, Halloween witches, devils, ghosts, vampires, including a lot of people with fake blood, painted white faces and hair that screams.

2013 JCI Mauritius Creative Young Entrepreneur Award

Last year, JCI Port Louis was the host of the Creative Young Entrepreneur Award (CYEA) competition which recognises and honours young entrepreneurs for their creativity in business. The award ceremony was held on 28th September 2013 at the LUX Belle Mare hotel. The panel of jury consisted of experts in the business world like are economist Mr. Erig Ng, CEO of GML Mr. Arnaud Lagesse and Mrs. Vimi Appadoo of Women Entrepreneur Council. It was Fabien Halbwach of the Bite Me Co Ltd who won the competition for his innovative idea of selling suchis online. The JCI Mauritius Creative Young Entrepreneur Award has been a challenge on so many levels. It is difficult to enumerate, but it is only through motivation and brotherhood it has taken form. In true JCI spirit, many members took a first time opportunity in their respective roles and we have learnt under the thoughtful and inspired direction of our local and national board, to whom we are thankful beyond words. I think we were also very lucky to achieve what we set out to do, and for that we must be thankful to our candidates, sponsors and many other people that contributed in different ways. We are very proud of what we have achieved, given the nature and scale of the challenge. This reminds me of Nelson Mandelas quote it always seems impossible until its done. Nevertheless, we must not forget that through this great adventure, each of us have been gifted with something special. And this gift is meant to be used for some other greater challenge, explained the project Director Nabill Aumeeruddy.

JCI Port Louis astounding legacy in 2013

Glory Days Everybody who is about to turn 30 knows the feeling of being 29 years old. It is the time when you say, oh my God, I am going to be 30, what have I done, what did I achieve, next year I am 30! :) Running an organisation which exists since 29 years feels just the same, more so when you are aware of how glorious JCI Port Louis was. The year 2013 has not always been an easy ride for JCI members. JCI is just like a family, when the members of your family face a problem; it surely impacts on the mood, the productivity and the enthusiasm of all the other members. Fortunately, our members are all bold soldiers and they never stay down for too long, they get up, brush their knees and go for it. I am very grateful for all the positive and enthusiastic members who all in a way of another contributed to the success of our organisation. It is such a delight and honour to witness almost all your Project Directors walk proudly upstage to be rewarded for the good work done during the year. This is a feeling which cannot really be described, you can only be thankful for everyone to have stood up for what they believed, be grateful for all of them to have bravely faced the adversities and lead their ship to safe harbours. What makes the Best Chapter award so special is that it is a reward for a common achievement and the good work of all the Members, Project Directors, friends of JCI, Senators and Aspiring members. It is a reward for the every little efforts made by everyone. I always tell members that every small effort made by members will contribute in making a big impact in the end, and it did. Every small action, every big effort, every word of encouragement, every participation in a project, every help, every advice, everything counts. As president of JCI Port Louis, my biggest reward for the year, was indeed that we won the best chapter award, not because it is prestigious award but because it is THE BEST WAY to say THANK YOU for every member, every senator, every aspiring member, all the leaders and members of the other chapters. Thank you for the faith, for the brotherhood, for the sense of belonging, for the determination and dedication and mostly thank you for the friendship. As past president the message which I would like to share with our leaders this year and all our JCI friends, is to lead the organisation as they would manage their own house and/or business. You need to feel that JCI is your organisation, the members are your family, and every time you face a problem, you have to take ownership and solve it in the same way as you would address a problem at home or in your work place. Be passionate and stay motivated, even a bed of roses may have a few rocks or accidental thorns hidden beneath the petals, be prepared for it and always, always work as a TEAM and keep the level of motivation high. When you believe in your organisation, when you believe in the best inside every member this will show and you will be amazed by the wonders you (as a family) can achieve. JCI Poverty Alleviation Program -

A year to remember

JCI PAP like all the years has shined last year too. It has been a promising year for the JCI PAP team. Their efforts have been awarded with two prestigious awards, best Local Project and Best Community Empowerment Program. Spotlight on the most exciting program of JCI Port Louis in 2013 : Visit of Vice President Abraham Nana Acquaye at Bois Marchand accompanied by 2013 National President Jessen Soobrayen and national board members. There was a poem reading in English by the children and the CPE children were rewarded by VP Nana for their good results. Visit of his Excellency Mr. Kailash Purryag, President of the Republic along with His Hon. Devanand Rittoo, Minister of Sports and HIs Hon. Satish Faugoo Minister of Agro Industry and Justice. School bags were distributed to the children by the Head of Mauritius Telecom Foundation & JCI Senator Bashir Mahamode. On the same day, SEVA (Mauritius Telecom Foundation) offered the lunch, a visit to Appravasi Ghat and a Cinema experience to the children. The film Julie a Mauritian Production was seen and after the session the children were surprised to see some of the actors waiting for them for an autograph session. The children were even interviewed by the MBC TV. Donation of 20 computers from Financial Services Commission. They were remitted by Head of FSC & JCI Senator Clairette Ah Hen. These computers are used to provide basic IT courses to the children. Fun Walk by the children for Environment Day, in Bois Marchand village. Visit to Casela Nature Park and lunch at Flic en Flac beach. A first time visit to Casela for most children. The most exciting and awaiting moment of 2013 was the visit of World President Chiara Milani with the following activities: 1.Donation of copybooks by 2013 Local President Asheveena Mewa of JCI City Plus 2.The children sung Heal the World and were accompanied by 2013 World President Chiara Milani 3.2013 World President Chiara Milani was offered a painting representing the little hands of JCI PAP kids. 4.2013 World President also planted the National flower Trochetia Buttoniana in the garden of Bois Marchand Community Centre. Health Campaign in collaboration with JCI Curepipe was organised where there was an awareness Session on good eating habits by Divya Poorun, Nutritionist. The children were provided with a health pack sponsored by le Meritt Holdings. The year end was ended with a small party at Coronilla beach hotel where the kids performed on various acts. Christmas Gift and Copy books were given to the children sponsored by Le Meritt Holdings. 12 children of IT classes were awarded a certificate. None of the above who have been possible without the commitment of JCI members and the JCI PAP team and many other partners; a heartily thanks to our main CSR partner for 2013 : Le Meritt Holdings.

National Projects - Our twinkling Stars

In the mid year of 2013, there were two competitions held. This time our members made us proud by winning both the competition. The debate competition was won by Annabelle Aza, Divya Padaruth, Chitra Beekhoo and Pritty Padaruth. JCI Port Louis not only won the debate but our member Divya Padaruth was awarded Best Speaker. It was really great participating in this debate competition. Our team members at JCI Port Louis had participated only with the idea of getting some debating experience but we managed to get the winning trophy as well as the trophy for the best speaker. My deep appreciation goes to the organising committee and the participants who together made this a wonderful experience, stated Chitra proudly. For the JCI Mauritius Public Speaking National Competition 2013, our members shined. Under the French category, Fabrice Malie won the first prize while Leena Lollbeeharry won under the English category. Leena shares her astounding experience with us. Public speaking is the art of speaking to a group of people in a structured manner intended to inform, influence or entertain the audience. Most careers will require that you give presentations or deliver speeches. In fact, public speaking is one of the most dreaded things in the world as there are a lot of people who wont mind dying rather than making a speech in public. But once stage fright fear is conquered, you conquer the fear of communicating to lots of people all at once. The JCI Mauritius Public Speaking Competition has been organised and well executed by JCI Quatre Bornes. The competition is intended to give the young and active citizens of the JCI family the platform to express and share their views on local, national and international issues, also to develop and perfect their speaking skills. As young leaders, they will encounter different situations where they will have to speak in front of audience. Prior to the competition, we had gladly welcomed a briefing session on Tips for Public Speaking by Senator Aruna Pulton. The topic for the 2013 competition which was posted online by Project Director Susrut Limaye was on the Interfaith Harmony for World Peace in line with the words spoken by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, in his message for World Interfaith Harmony Week, 2013. The topic was quite a challenge in itself but it did not deter me from taking up the challenge. JCI Port Louis had 5 of its members participating in the contest namely Divya Padaruth, Soomayyah Jaulim, Leena Lollbeeharry [myself], Fabrice Malie and Nabiil Aumeeraully. I wish again to congratulate all of the participants as they are all winners in having taken up the challenge to speak in front of a public. Before the competition, I have been afraid that Ill freeze, choke or faint during my speech but I managed to finish with no such bad happenings, all thanks to the support and cheers of my friends. Winning the JCI Mauritius Speech Contest [English] has been a beautiful surprise. I have faced several challenged on my way there but each one of the speeches I have had to deliver in the past, have only strengthened me to make the person I am today. I have still a lot to learn and I still do get butterflies in my stomach when I have to make a speech in front of an audience. But I have realised that overcoming them is a matter of practice and rising confidence levels. There is no shortcut or easier, softer option. In mastering public speaking techniques, we must stand a trial by fire. It is very similar to learning to ride a horse or bicycle. If we fall off, we must immediately get on again. Failing to face ones fears in the public speaking arena will reinforce the fear. I would encourage you to seize any opportunity that you may have to stand up and speak in front of an audience, little by little, you will gain much confidence and become a better public speaker and sway the audience verbally. On a closing note, Use your head but speak from your heart! And all I want to wish you is to speak with your heart as a speech from the heart can never fails you. Please find the excerpt from my speech which I wish to share with all of you: The World Intefaith Harmony Week has as motto - Love of God and Love of your Neighbour, The golden rule is to love your neighbour as you love yourself. Now I will not go and say I love Yous to all my neighbours. In simple and random acts of kindness, mutual respect, sharing and understanding, we can create strong bonds of friendship and unity. The Dalai Lama has coined this phrase,If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito. So let us do our part and start something small near us to greater local initiatives, creating a posititive change and impacting the world around us. Let us all be instruments of peace. My belief in World Interfaith Harmony is to have one culture, that of peace and one religion, that of love. Leena Lollbeeharry

This year, JCI Port Louis has the pleasure and honour to host the TOYP [The Outstanding Young Person Awards]. Every year, JCI selects 10 outstanding young people under 40 who live the JCI Mission in extraordinary ways. Highlighting the accomplishments of these young active citizens in a variety of fields inspire us to be better and realize our full potential as active citizens. Young men and women may be nominated in one of ten categories. The honorees will be selected by a panel of distinguished judges. Up to ten honorees will be selected from all nominations received, regardless of category entered. The 2014 TOYP is led by Leena Lollbeeharry,

The aim of JBA is to promote the principle of free enterprise and achieve a good business networking among future entrepreneurs As per the Plan of Action For 2014, the JCI Business Academy team has decided to focus on themes that will coincide with UNMDG 1, 2 and 7. 1. Extreme poverty is a condition characterized by severe deprivation of basic human needs, including food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, health, shelter, education and information. Moreover, the JBA has decided to hold a Forum this year to discuss and develop these facts that will help to eradicate poverty in Mauritius. 2.The second goal in the UN Millennium Development Goal is to achieve Universal Primary Education, more specifically, to ensure that by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike will be able some children in Mauritius of primary school age who are not in school. Since the Millennium Development Goals were launched, and Sri Lanka, have successfully completed a campaign towards universal primary education. The JBA Team will organise this year more than 2 Forums that will elaborate on that and also look for solutions in the future to improve education in Mauritius. 3. Healthy ecosystems and environments are necessary to the survival and flourishing of humans and other organisms. There are a number of major ways of reducing negative human impact. The JBA will soon focus on that on the next forum and will invite influential people who have contributed a lot to ensure environment sustainability. Following MDG 7 for environment sustainability, JCI Port Louis has decided to launch the project of Green Corner in every house .The objectives of this project are: To sensitize people on the importance of conserving plants and biodiversity To promote the cultivation of medicinal and indeginous plants To promote composting To encourage every citizen in planting trees and help in promoting biodiversity This project will be completed with the collaboration of other - - JCI City Plus Rain Water Harvesting JCI Quatres Bornes Go Green Project

Our Best New Member - A rising leader

He swore as a member of JCI Port Louis in June 2012 with the aim to serve humanity. He considers himself as a reserved and shy guy but his actions and participative attitudes made him the winner of the best new member of 2013. The man who has a passion for history and philosophy is Fabrice Mali.

How did you come to know about JCI and when you joined? I met Nabiil Aumeeruddy who was already a member of JCI Port Louis and he convinced me to join in. I attended my first meetings in January 2012 and sworn in during TOYP in June 2012. Why you chose JCI in particular? The JCI Creed was particularly appealing to me and the phrase Service to Humanity is the best work of life drew me towards JCI. How do you manage to balance your professional life, personal life and JCI? Well, being an active JCI member can cause a strain with family members as I am less often at home. I try to focus on my professional life but it is not easy. I am still trying hard to cope with the growing responsibilities. Time management is very essential or else you are always sleep deprived. The Benefits you earned as a JCI member? I was able to act with a sense of duty and purpose in the JCI project and activities. It has also helped me in searching for a way to lead a meaningful life. I have had the opportunity to learn thorough the various activities and not limit myself only reading books as I have been doing since long. How your life has changed after being a JCI member? I was able to meet true friends even if we are subjected to divergence of views sometimes. I have met people from other walks of life. What message you would like to give aspiring members to be a successful member? Be persistent, value teamwork and forget your ego. A sprinkle of self confidence may also help. Was it easy to become the best aspiring member for the year 2013? No, it was quite tough at times. Ups and downs are bound to occur during the year. I have tried to do my best by striving to uphold the JCI spirit and the values of the organisation. I consider that winning this award does not mean I should stop here but this award is an encouragement to keep up the good work and be better next time. What are your future plans in JCI? To become a competent Local Secretary and excel in this domain One thing you want to change or add in JCI? The esprit de corps among JCI members is fragile and must always be sustained and encouraged.
