business jets be based at relatively remote airports and that
helicopters be used for into-town links. On current estimates
the company expects a total market of 5.000 units by 1980 for
machines like the Twinjet.
The prime criteria were for maximum safety, passenger
comfort and convenience, performance, reliability and a
streamlined appearance. The powerplant has been designed
specifically for this application; the units are mounted in such
a way as to be totally isolated from each other, with the inten-
tion that failure in one will not affect the other. A four-
bladed single rotor was chosen for simplicity and smoothness;
the rotor is shaft driven. The choice of three steel spars per
blade is intended to provide a completely fail-safe structure;
blades will also be individually interchangeable. The estimated
performance suggests that the Gates Twinjet Helicopter will set
entirely new standards of speed for civil VTOL and the
engine-out performance safety factors should make it a
practical vehicle for high utilisation. The makers' aim is a
minimum of 250hr between periodic maintenance inspections.
The nearest existing rival to the Lear helicopter is the
Bell 212 powered by coupled PT6s, which is nearing certifica-
tion. Among possible competitors, but also slighty larger, are
the Sud/Westland WG-13 and the SIAI Marchetti SV 20. Bell
is also developing a twin version of the JetRanger; this will
be smaller and cheaper than the Lear machine but could offer
a similar performance. Although there is considerable interest
in this market (much more than has been indicated here) the
Lear helicopter is notable for being designed specifically for
private and corporate ownership. The claims to advanced
performance on low horsepower could make this a significant
advance in the rotary-winged artif the claims are realised
in practice.
Below left, the master milestone schedule is aimed at a first flight in
mid-1971, and delivery of fully certificated aircraft before the end of
1972. Below right, the payload-range performance
